The best Raspberry Pi alternative for a low-power home server depends on the software you need to run, the storage and networking you require, and the power used by the complete system—not just its board. Consider an ARM single-board computer such as the Orange Pi 5 Plus or Radxa ROCK 5B if you want a compact board, or an Intel N100-class mini PC if your software expects a conventional x86 PC. Published adapter ratings and board specifications do not establish which option uses the least power at idle.
Which alternative should you choose?
| Option | Consider it when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Orange Pi 5 Plus | You want an RK3588-based ARM board with manufacturer-listed support for several operating systems. | Confirm that your server software works on your chosen OS and ARM architecture; account for storage, cooling, and its fixed 5V power input. |
| Radxa ROCK 5B | You need features including 2.5GbE, or want the option of PoE. | PoE requires an additional HAT. Radxa recommends a 30W adapter, but that rating is not the board’s measured everyday consumption. |
| Intel N100-class mini PC | Your applications or services depend on x86, or you prefer a conventional PC platform. | Check the exact model’s idle draw, firmware, storage, networking, and noise. “N100 mini PC” describes a category, not one uniform configuration. |
These are starting points, not a measured ranking. The available published figures do not provide a controlled, workload-matched comparison of whole-system idle power across the boards and mini PCs.

How to compare complete home-server systems
Start with software compatibility
Check that each required service supports the processor architecture and the operating system image you plan to use. Manufacturer OS lists establish that images are offered; they do not guarantee that every application, container, driver, or hardware-acceleration feature will work. The Orange Pi 5 Plus specifications list Orange Pi OS, Android 12, Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and other systems, but verify the current image and application support for your intended setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Match networking to the workload
For large transfers or several network clients, check the exact Ethernet speed and any additional networking hardware. Radxa lists a 2.5GbE port on the ROCK 5B. It also supports PoE when paired with an extra PoE HAT, so PoE is not a board-only feature. For the other candidates, confirm networking on the exact board or mini-PC configuration rather than assuming all models in a category are alike.

Include boot and data storage
Compare the available storage interfaces and the cost of the complete drive setup. Include any adapters, enclosures, and cooling needed for your chosen boot or data drive. A board price alone does not tell you the cost of a reliable, usable server, and attached storage can affect both the power supply requirement and the system’s actual draw.
Measure power for the system you will run
Look for measured whole-system watts at idle and under a representative load, with the intended power supply, storage, cooling, and workload connected. A supply’s rated capacity is not a measurement of what the machine consumes. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation gives typical bare-board active current of 600mA for Pi 4 Model B and 800mA for Pi 5, while noting that actual current depends on peripherals. Those figures cannot be compared fairly with other systems unless test conditions match.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Compare setup effort and total cost
Use current local prices for a complete setup, including memory, storage, power supply, and any required HAT or adapter. Product configurations and prices change. Also weigh OS-image maturity, update support, documentation, and how much troubleshooting you are willing to do; specifications alone cannot establish which system will be easiest to maintain.

What the named alternatives offer
Orange Pi 5 Plus
Orange Pi lists the 5 Plus with a Rockchip RK3588 octa-core processor—four Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores—multiple memory configurations, eMMC socket options, and support for multiple operating systems. Its specified power input is 5V/4A; that is an input requirement, not an idle-power result. Orange Pi’s wiki says the Type-C power interface uses fixed 5V and does not support USB Power Delivery negotiation, so use a supply that meets the board’s stated input requirement rather than expecting PD negotiation to select the voltage.

- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
Radxa ROCK 5B
Radxa lists the ROCK 5B as an RK3588-family board with 2.5GbE and an NPU rated up to 6 TOPS. The NPU specification is not by itself evidence that a particular home-server application will use it. PoE needs an additional HAT. Radxa’s power guide recommends its 30W adapter and says attached SSDs and a 4G module require additional power; the recommendation describes supply capacity, not typical or idle wattage.
Intel N100-class mini PCs
An N100-class mini PC can be a practical category to investigate when an x86 software stack matters. Specifications, firmware, storage options, networking, cooling, and noise vary by device, so assess an exact model. A January 2026 market comparison treats cost, power use, and performance as relevant comparison axes, but it does not establish one universally best mini PC or a lowest-power winner.

Make the decision against your workload
- Choose by software first: rule out systems that cannot run your required services reliably on the available architecture and OS.
- Choose by connectivity and storage next: confirm Ethernet, drive interfaces, and any required HATs or adapters.
- Compare complete-system power and cost: include the intended peripherals, supply, and cooling, and use measured power rather than adapter ratings.
- Value maintainability: prefer an OS image and update path you can support over a specification advantage you cannot use.
