What to do during the encounter

- Move children and pets away. Bring them indoors or to a secure area well clear of the snake, and keep them supervised. Do not let a curious pet approach or investigate it.
- Leave an escape route. Do not block, corner, chase, or try to move the snake. If it can leave without anyone approaching it, let it go.
- Do not handle it or approach for a photo. A close look is not worth the risk. Do not attempt to identify it by picking it up or getting nearer.

Make the garden less inviting
There is no universal yard treatment that guarantees snakes will stay away. ACT Government guidance suggests reducing hiding places and food attractants; these are practical local-authority recommendations, not a promise that a garden can be made snake-proof. ACT Government: Snakes.
- Keep the garden maintained and reduce dense, undisturbed cover where practical.
- Remove debris piles that can provide hiding places.
- Keep pet food and water bowls away from wildlife.
- Manage compost so it does not attract rodents, which can in turn attract snakes.
Seasonal activity also depends on location. The ACT describes snakes as more active there from October to March; that period should not be applied to other regions or hemispheres.
