If you find a sexual deepfake or other intimate image shared without consent, do not repost or forward it. If it is safe, record where you found it and any related threats, report each copy to the platform hosting it, and use the child-safety route if the person depicted was under 18 when shown. The right authority, removal deadline, and support service depend on where you are.
What to do first
- Do not spread the material. Do not repost it, forward it, link to it in comments, or send it to friends. Police Scotland advises people not to share someone else’s intimate photos. If the material depicts a minor, do not download or circulate it; report it through the platform’s child-safety channel and the appropriate child-protection authority.
- Record the incident safely. If you can do so without saving or sharing the image, note the exact post or page URL, the platform or site, the account name and username or user ID, when you saw it, and any relevant messages or threats. Keep any platform report reference. A trusted person can help with documentation and reporting.
- Report it to every platform hosting a copy. Use the post’s report control or the platform’s safety or help form. Choose non-consensual intimate imagery, sexual deepfake, or the closest available category. Explain that the image is intimate and was shared without consent; include the URL and account details. RAINN recommends reporting each appearance separately. A report to the host is a direct route to request removal.
- Escalate threats or immediate danger. For suspected crime, stalking, extortion, or a credible threat, contact local police or emergency services as appropriate. If the person shown is a child, use the child-safety route rather than treating the material as an ordinary adult image-abuse report.
- Get support. Finding this material can be distressing. If you are the person depicted, ask someone you trust to help with reporting if that makes the process easier.
Synthetic or AI-generated imagery can still be non-consensual intimate-image abuse. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) includes AI deepfakes in its guidance.

Use the reporting route that fits the person depicted
If the person depicted was under 18
Use the platform’s child-safety reporting channel and the relevant child-protection reporting authority. In the United States, FTC guidance points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline and Take It Down. Do not download or circulate the material to document it; follow the receiving authority’s instructions for any evidence it requests.
If the person depicted was an adult
Report the content to each host platform. If the person depicted can access the intimate image used to make the deepfake, StopNCII may be an additional option: it creates a digital fingerprint of the image, rather than sharing the image itself, and checks for matches on participating platforms. It is not a universal removal service. Exact matches work best, most encrypted messaging services are outside its coverage, and altered or cropped versions may require a separate fingerprint if the person can access that version.

If you are a witness, not the person depicted
You can report the post and preserve its location and context without forwarding the image. Do not submit intimate material through an unrelated channel or send it to the person depicted unless they ask for that kind of help. If a report requires information you do not have, report what you observed and leave the affected person or relevant authority to provide any additional evidence securely.
Preserve useful details without amplifying the image
Authorities and platforms may need enough information to locate the post and understand what happened. Police.uk and Police Scotland identify details such as URLs, platform, account names or usernames, timing, and what was said or sent as useful. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission asks for links or screenshots with dates and times where possible.

- Exact URL or post link, plus the app, site, or platform where it appeared.
- Account display name and username or user ID, and the date and time you saw it; include a time zone if known.
- Relevant messages, threats, or extortion demands, and what was said or sent.
- The platform’s report confirmation or reference number, if provided.
Prefer recording the post’s location and surrounding context over copying the intimate image. Follow the receiving authority’s secure evidence instructions. Singapore’s regulator warns that, under Singapore law, sharing, keeping, or accessing intimate images without consent is illegal except for specified reporting, authority, or court purposes and only for as long as necessary; that statement is specific to Singapore.

United States
FTC guidance says platforms covered by the Take It Down Act must provide a way to report intimate images, including deepfakes, and remove covered content and known identical copies within 48 hours after a request. If a covered platform does not remove the content or lacks a working reporting route, the FTC says to file a complaint. The FTC generally cannot enforce against platforms hosted outside U.S. jurisdiction, and it does not provide case-status updates or crisis support. These rules do not establish a worldwide deadline.

United Kingdom
The UK government’s Crime and Policing Act 2026 intimate image abuse factsheet, updated 30 September 2026, describes platform duties to take down non-consensual intimate images as soon as reasonably practical and no later than 48 hours after a report. This is UK-specific information. Check whether the relevant provisions have commenced and apply to the platform and case before relying on the deadline for a particular report.
Singapore
The Online Safety Commission accepts qualifying reports from people with specified connections to Singapore. Its examples of intimate-image abuse include realistic sexual videos generated using AI or digital tools. It asks for relevant details and supporting links or screenshots where possible; if you are not eligible to report to the Commission, report the content to the platform. The regulator advises saving evidence before a report if removal could affect later police or legal action.

Elsewhere
There is no global removal deadline established by the cited guidance. Report the content to the host platform, then consult local police, a victim-support organization, or a qualified local legal service if you need help with legal options or escalation.
Removing a post is not the same as removing every trace
Each platform hosting a copy needs its own report. Search-engine removal is a separate action: a result can stop appearing in search without the original page being removed, and a host can remove a page while a search result remains temporarily visible. RAINN lists separate routes for reporting content to platforms and Google Search results. Where the image has been copied to several sites, report each known location and keep its URL and report reference.
Where to find support
In the United States, RAINN offers free, confidential, 24/7 sexual violence support in English and Spanish. Police Scotland’s guidance lists the Revenge Porn Helpline and Childline’s Report Remove for people aged 18 or younger in its jurisdiction. These services are location-specific examples, not worldwide services; seek a local support organization if you are elsewhere.
