Can You Control Apple Home Devices When You’re Away From Home?

Remote Apple Home control requires a supported home hub at home, Home enabled in iCloud, and the same Apple Account on your iPhone and hub.

Yes. You can control accessories in Apple’s Home app while away if your home has a configured home hub, the hub is at home and online, and Home is enabled in iCloud on your iPhone. Apple’s current iPhone guide names Apple TV 4K and HomePod as hub examples and requires the iPhone and hub to use the same Apple Account. Apple’s remote-control guide

What you need for remote control

  • A home hub at home: Apple’s setup guidance covers HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV. HomePod becomes a hub when set up; add Apple TV to a room in the Home app. Keep the hub powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi. Apple’s home-hub setup guidance
  • Home enabled in iCloud: On iPhone, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > See All > Home. Apple’s iPhone guide
  • The same Apple Account: Sign in to the same account on the iPhone and the hub. Apple says Apple TV 4K or HomePod can be set up automatically as a hub when signed into that account. Apple’s iPhone guide

You do not necessarily need to buy another device: first check whether you already have a supported hub configured at home. Apple notes that HomePod mini, HomePod, and Apple TV availability varies by country or region. Apple’s home-hub setup guidance

Set up remote access

  1. Place a supported Apple TV or HomePod-family device at home, connect it to home Wi-Fi, and leave it powered on. For Apple TV, add it to a room in the Home app. Apple’s setup instructions
  2. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud > See All > Home and turn on Home. Apple’s iPhone guide
  3. Confirm the iPhone and home hub are signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s iPhone guide
  4. Open the Home app when away and try controlling an accessory. Remote access depends on the hub being available at home and the relevant devices being connected.

Can an iPad be your home hub?

Do not choose an iPad as a general current solution. Apple’s Home User Guide still describes an iPad running iPadOS 13 or later left at home, but explicitly says an iPad is not supported as a hub on the new Home architecture. For current setup advice, use Apple TV or a HomePod-family hub. Apple’s iPhone guide Apple’s Home User Guide

Matter and Thread accessories have extra requirements

A Matter label alone does not guarantee that an accessory will work remotely in your particular Home setup. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to Home. Thread-enabled Matter accessories need a Thread-enabled hub; Apple gives HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples. Some Thread combinations also require a compatible Thread border router. Check the exact accessory, hub, and network combination before buying or troubleshooting. Remote access for residents and guests

Residents can have local access and, when enabled, remote access; remote access requires a home hub. Apple describes Home Guests as having local-only access to selected doors, locks, and security-system accessories, subject to a schedule. Guest access should not be treated as a way to control the home remotely. Apple’s iPhone sharing guide
