Keep your distance, call the official marine mammal stranding hotline for your location, and follow responders’ instructions. Do not touch, feed, move, or try to push the whale back into the water; trained teams must assess and handle stranded whales.
What to do first
- Move back and keep others away. Get children and pets to a safe distance. Do not enter the surf or cross unstable sand to get closer. Follow any distance guidance from the local stranding authority.
- Call the appropriate stranding hotline. Give the precise location first, including a beach name, nearby landmarks, or GPS coordinates if you have them. In the United States, use the regional number listed by NOAA Fisheries; outside the U.S., contact the official wildlife or marine mammal stranding authority for that country or coast.
- Describe what you can safely see. Tell the operator when you found the whale, how many animals there are, whether they appear alive or dead, and their visible condition. Give a species or size estimate only if you can do so without approaching.
- Offer a distant photo or video if safe and legal. Do not move closer or delay the call to take one.
- Wait for instructions and leave responders room to work. Keep the area quiet and discourage crowding. If the whale moves away, do not chase or try to corral it.
Why you should not try to refloat it
A whale on shore may be seriously ill or injured, and an attempted rescue by bystanders can worsen its condition, delay professional assessment, and put people at risk. As NOAA Fisheries explains, “Live whales, dolphins, and porpoises that strand on land need specialized emergency care and should only be returned to the water by authorized and trained professionals.”

Do not push, pull, tow, roll, handle, feed, or pour water on the animal. Do not assume a still-looking whale is safe to approach or touch; keep a safe distance and follow the hotline’s directions.

Follow the local authority’s instructions rather than applying one distance everywhere. NOAA’s West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network tells the public to stay at least 100 yards away and keep pets at least 100 yards away. NOAA’s Hawaiʻi guidance says to maintain a safe distance without specifying that same measurement in the cited passage. The relevant instructions can differ by region and animal.

From a safe place, be ready to share the date and time, exact location, number of animals, whether each appears alive or dead, and species if known. Mention obvious entanglement or injury only if visible without approaching. A safe, legal photo or video may help, but your observation should not put you, your pet, or the whale at greater risk.
