Pause and observe it; don’t pick it up or put it outside automatically. A stick-like insect may be difficult to identify, could be an escaped pet, and may be subject to local release rules. Take a photo if you can, keep children and pets away, and get local advice if its identity or status is unclear.
What to do first
- Keep your distance and observe. Prevent children and pets from touching or swatting it while you work out what it might be. Stick insects often rely on camouflage and may stay still, sway, or drop when disturbed.
- Take a photo if practical. Capture its full body and legs without disturbing it just to get a better image. A stick-like shape alone is not enough to identify the species; grasshoppers, true bugs, and mantids can look similar. Identification can also be harder when the insect is immature.
- Consider where it came from. It may be a local wild insect, but stick insects are also kept as pets. If it looks like a pet escape, you see several insects, or you suspect eggs, don’t release it outdoors while you seek local guidance.
- Check local guidance before release. Rules and ecological risks vary by location and species. If you can’t identify it or confirm that release is appropriate, contact a local wildlife authority, extension service, museum, or entomological group.
Should you handle or move it?
If it can leave through an open door or window without being handled, letting it do so may be an option only where local guidance makes that appropriate. Otherwise, avoid casual handling. Risks vary by species: some stick insects can lose legs easily, pinch or bite, or spray defensive chemicals. Don’t handle an unidentified insect near your face.

If moving it is necessary, the Australian Museum advises letting it walk onto a flat palm rather than pulling it from a surface. The museum’s guidance is: “Remember; let the stick insect do the handling.” Stick insects are most comfortable hanging upside down, so avoid squeezing or trying to force a particular position. Some species’ defensive spray can cause serious discomfort. The Amateur Entomologists’ Society notes that the spray of the American walking stick can cause temporary blindness and considerable pain. This is a species-specific caution, not evidence that every stick insect is dangerous. Amateur Entomologists’ Society: Stick insects

Why you shouldn’t assume it is safe to release
Escaped or discarded captive insects can create problems beyond the house. UC IPM reports that Indian walking sticks have become established in some California landscapes after escapes and discarded eggs. Females can produce viable eggs without mating, and the eggs can be difficult to distinguish from droppings. Those are California-specific facts, not a universal description of every stick insect or region. UC IPM: Indian walking stick
In England and Wales, official guidance says the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 prohibits releasing into the wild animals that are not resident in Great Britain or regular wild visitors. Additional restrictions apply to listed invasive alien animals; for those listed animals, the guidance states: “You must not release them into the environment.” The rule depends on the animal’s status and does not mean that every stick insect is prohibited from release. Check the applicable rules where you live. UK Government: Invasive alien species rules in England and Wales

How to get help identifying it
Send a clear photo to a local wildlife authority, university or agricultural extension service, museum, or entomological group. Include your location and say whether you keep stick insects or have seen more than one. A specialist group notes that a clear image may be enough to confirm an identification, though adult features can make identification easier than an immature insect. Phasmid Study Group

Stick insects belong to the order Phasmatodea. Many have slender, stick-like or leaf-like bodies and thread-like antennae; camouflage and movement can make them hard to spot. Those traits can help describe the insect to an expert, but they don’t establish the identity of an individual specimen.
