If you can’t host or join online co-op in Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6, first check that both players have compatible platforms and editions, can access their platform’s online network, and are joining while the host’s session remains open. Then narrow down whether the failure affects every partner or just one. Capcom identifies a host/session interruption and a NAT-type mismatch as possible causes of error 50383-MW1; its guidance for 50382-MW1 describes a failed or timed-out peer-to-peer connection. Neither code means every co-op failure has the same fix.
Start by identifying where the connection fails
Before changing router settings, compare notes with the other player. Record the exact error, if one appears, and determine whether the issue is a general platform-network problem, a session that closes during joining, or a repeatable failure with a particular friend.

- Game and edition: Is each player using Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6, and which platform and edition?
- Online access: Can each player sign in to the relevant platform network and use other online features?
- Session state: Does the host remain in the lobby or session until the join attempt finishes?
- Who is affected: Does the failure happen with every partner or only one specific player?
- Error and timing: What exact code appears, and does the problem happen consistently or intermittently?
This distinction matters: Capcom says 50383-MW1 can occur if the host disappears or the host connection breaks, while its 50382-MW1 guidance describes a failed or timed-out P2P connection. A problem limited to one friend may involve either player’s network environment.
Confirm platform and edition compatibility
Make sure both players are using versions that can play together before troubleshooting NAT or changing firewall settings. Steam lists co-op for Resident Evil 5 and co-op, shared-screen, and split-screen features for Resident Evil 6. Those listings do not establish cross-play compatibility between platforms or editions, so don’t assume players can connect just because they own the same game title.

- Adventure horror game from Capcom
Also check whether the relevant platform network is working for both players. If online features are failing more broadly, consult the platform’s current service-status page; the available guidance does not establish that a current outage is affecting these games.
Keep the host’s session open during the join
Ask the host to remain in the lobby or session until the guest’s connection attempt completes. Capcom says 50383-MW1 may appear when the host disappears or logs out during the attempt, or when the host connection breaks. If the session closes before the guest joins, retry with the host keeping it open rather than immediately changing network settings.

For 50383-MW1 on PS4 or Xbox One, compare NAT types
Capcom says frequent 50383-MW1 errors usually stem from a difference in NAT type between players. It describes Type 3 as strict: some online activity may work, but other functions may not work as intended. Type 2 is described as moderate and normally connected. Check both players’ results rather than assuming the host alone is responsible.
- On PS4: Open Settings > Network > Internet Connection Status and check the NAT type.
- On Xbox One: Press the Xbox button, then open Settings > Network > Network Settings > Test NAT Type.
These are the menu paths Capcom gives for PS4 and Xbox One; labels and paths may differ on other console generations or after system updates. If either result is strict, consult the console, router, or ISP documentation for safe configuration guidance. Do not treat DMZ or open-NAT settings as a casual fix: Capcom notes that they can create security risks.

If only one friend cannot join, check both network paths
Capcom’s 50382-MW1 guidance describes a failed or timed-out peer-to-peer connection. If you can play with other partners but not one particular person, that points to a connection issue involving that player’s network environment, but it does not prove which side is at fault. Have both players check their online access and NAT status where available, and retry with the host staying in the session.
Capcom’s error article does not establish that every 50382-MW1 message in Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6 maps to the same cause. If the code persists, use the platform-specific network guides Capcom recommends rather than applying port settings from another game.

On Steam, try general connectivity checks
Steam’s network advice is general PC troubleshooting, not a confirmed Resident Evil 5- or Resident Evil 6-specific fix. Try these low-risk checks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Check Steam’s network status and confirm the Steam client can connect normally.
- If available, test with a direct wired connection. This can help determine whether the current wireless connection is contributing to the problem; it does not resolve incompatibility, a host leaving, or every NAT issue.
- Review whether your firewall or router is blocking Steam or the game. If you change firewall permissions, refresh the rules and restart Steam; do not leave the firewall disabled.
- Close background applications that may interfere with connectivity, then retry.
- If connection problems occur only at particular hours, Steam lists ISP traffic shaping as one possible explanation. That timing alone does not prove your ISP is responsible.
No authoritative port-forwarding list specific to Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 is established here. Avoid copying port ranges published for other games and treating them as requirements for these titles.
