Breathing trouble, throat swelling, faintness, or loss of consciousness require emergency help.
First, check whether the recall applies to your snack
Recall notices usually cover specific products, sizes, and codes—not necessarily every item made by a brand. Compare the notice with the package’s exact snack or flavor, package size, lot or batch number, best-by date, and sales area. Follow the instructions in that specific notice.

FDA alerts illustrate why the details matter: a February 12, 2026 notice covered selected Junebar Chocolate Cherry and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bars with specified batch markings; a March 4, 2026 alert covered select 8-ounce bags of Miss Vickie’s Spicy Dill Pickle chips; and a July 7, 2026 notice concerned OLA-OLA pounded yam containing undeclared sodium caseinate derived from milk. These are examples, not a list of all recalls or a claim that any one is your product. Check the latest FDA recall and alert notices.
What to do depends on allergy history and symptoms
Known milk allergy and symptoms
Stop eating the snack immediately. FDA advises people with a known food allergy who begin experiencing symptoms to evaluate whether to use emergency medication such as epinephrine and seek medical attention. Follow the person’s allergy action plan and use prescribed medication as directed; do not wait for symptoms to worsen if the plan calls for action.

- IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
- TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
- HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
- EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
Milk-allergy symptoms can appear within minutes to a few hours. They may include hives or rash, itching or tingling in the mouth, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, coughing, wheezing, dizziness, breathing difficulty, throat swelling, or loss of consciousness. Breathing difficulty, throat swelling, faintness or dizziness, and loss of consciousness are urgent warning signs: use the person’s emergency plan and contact emergency services.
Known milk allergy but no symptoms
Stop eating the snack and monitor for symptoms, which may appear within minutes to a few hours. Keep the person’s allergy action plan available. If symptoms begin, follow the plan and seek medical advice; contact a health care provider if you are uncertain what to do.

No known milk allergy and no symptoms

Possible symptoms in anyone
Do not try to diagnose the reaction based on how mild it seems at first. Allergic reactions can progress. For severe symptoms—including trouble breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or loss of consciousness—seek emergency help and follow any existing allergy action plan.

Handle the remaining recalled food safely
Follow the product-specific notice. Recalled food can often be returned to the store for a refund; if it cannot be returned, dispose of it securely. Do not give it to another person, a food bank, or a pet. After removing the food, wash and sanitize surfaces, utensils, and storage areas it contacted, and wash your hands. See the FDA’s advice on recalled food.

Keep the packaging if possible. The ingredient statement, UPC, lot number, best-by or expiration date, and photos can help identify the product.
