If someone shares an intimate image of you without your consent, report the specific post to the platform, save basic details if it is safe, and ask someone you trust to help. You do not have to handle it alone, and agreeing to take or privately share an image does not mean you agreed to wider distribution.
What to do first
- Report the post or image to the platform. Use the report option on the content itself, or the platform’s support process if that is the available route. Keep the confirmation or case number if one is provided. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes both post-level reporting and platform support routes.
- Save information only if it is safe. Note the post’s URL, account name, where and when you saw it, and any threats or demands. Do not forward or repost the intimate image to preserve it. RAINN advises preserving evidence when it can be done safely and writing down what happened.
- Ask a trusted person for support. They can help you make reports and keep track of next steps. RAINN also recommends contacting a support specialist if the situation feels difficult to manage alone.
Limit further sharing with an image-matching tool
If you were an adult when the image was made
StopNCII is a free tool for adults. It creates a digital fingerprint of an image and shares that fingerprint—not the image itself—with participating platforms. Those platforms can check for matches and respond under their own policies. This may help limit sharing on participating services, but it does not erase every copy from every website, device, or encrypted channel.

If you were under 18 when the image was made
Use the current instructions for Take It Down, a service intended for explicit images or videos made when the person depicted was under 18. Do not circulate the image to try to get help or preserve evidence. StopNCII and Take It Down serve different age groups; follow the service guidance that applies to when the image was made.
Escalating a report in the United States
For requests covered by the U.S. Take It Down Act, the FTC says covered online platforms must provide a way to request removal of intimate images shared without consent, including deepfakes, and remove covered images and copies within 48 hours of a request. The FTC’s consumer guidance describes that deadline for covered platforms and qualifying requests; it is not a worldwide rule.

If a covered platform has not acted within 48 hours, FTC guidance directs people to report it at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The form asks which platform was involved and where the image was posted. Reporting a platform does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Find reporting and support routes where you live
Available reporting options, eligibility rules, and legal remedies depend on location. The FTC’s image-based-abuse guidance points people in the United States to local criminal law enforcement and the FBI for reporting perpetrators, and describes support resources through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. Consider qualified local advice for legal questions; an article cannot determine which laws apply to your situation.

Some places also offer specific services. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission has an eligibility-based reporting route and advises saving evidence if you may also report to police or take legal action. In British Columbia, the Intimate Images Protection Service offers reporting guidance, application help, and emotional support. These are local routes, not services available everywhere.
What consent means
You may have agreed to have an image taken or shared privately without agreeing to its wider distribution. Google’s reporting guidance recognizes that distinction. The person who shares an image without consent is responsible for that choice; having made or privately shared an image does not make you responsible for someone else distributing it.
