Start by identifying how the keyboard connects: wired USB, a Logitech wireless USB receiver, Bluetooth, or Logi Bolt. Each uses a different connection and pairing method, and Unifying and Logi Bolt receivers are not interchangeable. Then check power, connect any receiver directly to the PC, test the hardware on another computer, and only afterward change Windows power settings or buy a replacement.
The sequence below isolates whether the problem is power, the USB path, Windows, pairing, or a failed receiver.

1. Identify the keyboard’s connection type
Look at the keyboard, its cable and any small USB accessory before changing software. The model number on the underside or battery compartment is useful throughout troubleshooting.
| Connection | What to look for | Correct troubleshooting path |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | A permanently attached or detachable USB cable | Check the cable and USB port, then inspect Device Manager. There is no wireless receiver to pair. |
| Wireless USB receiver | A small USB receiver plugged into the computer | Check batteries, reseat the receiver directly, try another port and test the receiver on another computer. |
| Bluetooth | No USB receiver; the keyboard is designed to pair through Windows Bluetooth | Turn on Bluetooth in Windows and use the Add Bluetooth or other device flow. |
| Logi Bolt | A Bolt receiver, identified by the keyboard and receiver documentation or markings | Use the Bolt-specific pairing process. A Bolt receiver and a Unifying receiver are different ecosystems. |
Do not buy a receiver until you know which protocol the keyboard uses. A receiver that looks similar can still be incompatible.

2. Check power before troubleshooting Windows
A keyboard with no power cannot be discovered, paired or listed as working even when the computer’s USB ports are fine.
Non-rechargeable wireless models
- Turn the keyboard off, if it has a power switch.
- Remove the batteries and install brand-new batteries of the specified type. Recheck their orientation against the markings in the battery compartment.
- Turn the keyboard on and look for its power or battery indicator.
Do not use an old battery merely because it still powers another device. Replace both cells in a multi-cell compartment at the same time.
Rechargeable models
- Connect the keyboard to a different USB port directly on the computer, rather than through a hub.
- Try a different charging cable that fits the keyboard.
- Leave it connected long enough to establish whether the indicator changes, then test the keyboard again.
A charging cable or port can fail separately from the keyboard’s wireless electronics, so changing both the direct port and cable helps isolate that possibility.

3. Reset a wireless receiver and change USB ports
For a wireless USB model, remove intermediaries while diagnosing. Logitech’s guidance is to connect the receiver directly to the computer, not to a USB hub, extender or KVM switch.
- Save your work, then unplug the wireless receiver.
- Wait about 10 seconds. Microsoft specifically recommends this pause for USB wireless devices.
- Plug the receiver directly into a different USB port on the computer.
- If the computer has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, try USB 2.0 when a USB 3.0 port does not work reliably.
- Keep the keyboard reasonably close to the receiver while testing and move the receiver away from other USB devices where practical.
Do not diagnose through a docking station, hub or KVM. Once the keyboard works through a direct port, reconnect accessories one at a time to find the intermediary causing the problem.
4. Check what Windows 10 sees in Device Manager
Device Manager can show whether Windows detects a receiver, keyboard interface or USB problem, although a listed device is not proof that pairing is complete.

- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth (for a Bluetooth model), and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Logitech keyboard, a USB receiver, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Unplug the receiver, wait, and plug it back in while Device Manager is open. Note which entry disappears and returns.
- For a wired keyboard, repeat the same observation while reconnecting its cable.
If nothing changes when a receiver is inserted, try another direct port. If an entry has a warning icon, record its exact name and status before changing anything; that information helps distinguish a Windows driver or USB-controller issue from a dead receiver.

This is the quickest way to separate a keyboard or receiver fault from a problem on the original Windows 10 PC.
- On the second computer, use a direct USB port rather than a hub or dock.
- For a wireless model, plug in the same receiver and turn on the same keyboard.
- For a wired model, use the same cable if it is detachable.
- Type in a text field for several minutes and watch for disconnects.
Logitech states that if the product is still not recognized on a second computer, the fault is most likely related to the USB receiver rather than the keyboard or mouse. If it works on the second computer, focus on the first PC’s USB port, USB-chipset driver or USB power settings instead of replacing the keyboard.

6. Pair the keyboard with the correct method
Unifying receiver
Unifying devices use Logitech’s Unifying Software. Open the software, choose its connect or add-device flow, and follow the prompt to switch the keyboard off and back on when requested. Keep the receiver directly connected during the process. A keyboard paired to one Unifying receiver does not automatically pair to a different receiver.
Logi Bolt receiver
Use the Bolt-specific pairing process and confirm that both the keyboard and receiver are Bolt-compatible. Do not attempt to use Unifying Software for a Bolt device. Logitech lists low battery, hubs or KVMs, radio interference, USB power settings and hardware faults among possible Bolt connection causes, so return to the earlier power and direct-port checks if pairing fails.
Bluetooth keyboard
- Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on and select Add Bluetooth or other device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Put the keyboard into its pairing mode using the keyboard’s documented pairing key or switch.
- Select the keyboard when it appears and complete any code prompt.
If the keyboard does not appear, turn it off and on, replace or recharge its batteries, and remove old duplicate entries before trying again. A Bluetooth keyboard does not need a Logitech USB receiver.

7. Check Windows USB power management only after the basics
Intermittent operation or disconnects after sleep can be related to Windows USB power settings. Do this only after checking batteries, charging, ports, receiver placement and pairing.
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Change plan settings for the active plan, then Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings and USB selective suspend setting.
- Set it to Disabled, apply the change and restart the computer.
Windows 10 editions and power plans can show slightly different labels. If disabling selective suspend does not change the behavior, restore the previous setting rather than leaving an unrelated power option changed.
8. Decide whether Windows, the keyboard or the receiver is at fault
| Observation | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| No power light and fresh batteries or a different charging cable do not help | Check the model’s power switch and test on another computer. A hardware fault becomes more likely. |
| The receiver is absent from Device Manager on two computers | Inspect for physical damage and consider a model-compatible replacement receiver. |
| The receiver appears, but the keyboard does not type | Use the matching Unifying, Bolt or Bluetooth pairing method and verify power. |
| The keyboard works on another computer | Investigate the original PC’s USB port, USB-chipset driver and USB power settings. |
| It works only when connected directly | Remove the hub, KVM, dock or extender from the setup or test that accessory separately. |
| It disconnects after sleep | Check USB selective suspend after completing the physical and pairing checks. |
9. When a replacement makes sense
Replace an accessory only after the second-computer test and protocol check. A Logitech Unifying USB receiver is the direct physical replacement when the original Unifying receiver is missing or fails on multiple computers. It will not substitute for a Logi Bolt receiver, Bluetooth connection or a receiver from an incompatible product family.

Quick Recap
10. A compact diagnostic checklist
- Identify wired USB, Bluetooth, Unifying receiver or Logi Bolt.
- Install brand-new batteries, or try a different direct charging port and cable.
- Unplug a wireless receiver for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect it directly, without a hub, extender, dock or KVM.
- Try another USB port, including USB 2.0 if USB 3.0 is problematic.
- Inspect Device Manager while reconnecting the device.
- Test the same keyboard, cable and receiver on another computer.
- Use Unifying Software only for Unifying devices; use the Bolt process for Bolt devices.
- Change USB selective suspend only if disconnections continue after the basic checks.
- Confirm the exact model and protocol before buying a replacement.
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and has a two-day free trial with no credit card before subscription; results vary, and manual pairing or a failed receiver may still require the steps above.
