For a Windows computer, the primary download for the PIXMA MX490 is Canon’s MX490 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.02 (Windows). It is the standard package for printing, scanning and wireless setup. Canon lists Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP compatibility, with 32-bit and 64-bit distinctions where specified.
The MX490 is retired. Canon’s current U.S. product page says, “Product support is no longer available. Driver and content updates are not being made.” Canon regional support pages still host the MP Driver, an optional XPS driver, a firmware updater and manuals, but availability of future updates is not promised. Download only from Canon-hosted support pages and avoid third-party driver mirrors.

Choose the correct PIXMA MX490 Windows download
Most owners need the MP Driver, not a separate scanner-only package. Canon describes MX490 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.02 (Windows) as a standard driver that provides full printing and scanning functionality and allows wireless printer setup. The 32.30 MB package was last updated on 15 October 2021. Its update history records Windows 10 support in Ver. 1.01 and Windows 11 support in Ver. 1.02.

The XPS download is not a replacement for the MP Driver. Install the standard package first, and treat XPS as an additional, model-specific option.

Compatibility below is Canon’s published list for the Ver. 1.02 driver, not a new independent installation test.

Canon’s list does not constitute a promise that a retired printer will receive new Windows features or future driver revisions. On a current Windows release, use the Canon package that matches your operating system and follow the installer’s prompts rather than downloading a similarly named file from an unrelated site.
Is the MX490 driver safe to download?
The safest source is a Canon support page displaying the exact model name and package title. Check that the download is an executable supplied by Canon, that the model is identified as the MX490 series, and that the version matches the package you intend to install. Do not substitute a driver for another PIXMA model merely because Windows reports a similar name.

Because the MX490 is retired, Canon warns that product support and content updates are no longer being made. Existing Canon-hosted files can remain useful, but the retirement notice means you should not expect a new release for a later Windows change. Third-party “driver updater” mirrors can package altered or unwanted software, so they are not an appropriate source for this download.

Prepare Windows before installing
- Identify whether the printer will use a wireless router or a USB cable. Changing connection types can require a reinstall for scanning functions.
- Sign in with an administrator account. Canon’s wireless cableless setup instructions specifically require administrator access.
- Close applications that may be printing or scanning, and keep the printer powered on.
- For wireless installation, have the router’s network name (SSID) and network key or passphrase available.
- If you are reinstalling after a failed attempt, disconnect conflicting setup windows and restart Windows before running the Canon installer again.
Install or reinstall the MP Driver
- From Canon’s PIXMA MX490 support area, select MX490 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.02 (Windows) and download the EXE.
- Save the file in a location you can find, such as Downloads. Do not rename it while troubleshooting, because the original package name helps identify the correct model and version.
- Double-click the EXE. Canon says the file decompresses and starts the installation automatically.
- Read the setup screens, accept the requested terms and choose the connection method shown by the installer.
- Connect the printer by USB or allow the installer to detect the wireless device when prompted. Do not unplug the printer or shut down Windows while files are being copied.
- Complete the setup, print a test page and open a basic scan application to confirm both functions.
If setup was cancelled or interrupted while waiting for a connection, run the installer again. Canon also recommends reinstalling the MP Driver when you change from a network connection to USB and the printer’s scan-button operation stops working. Reinstalling replaces the connection configuration that Windows and the Canon software were using.
Set up the MX490 wirelessly on Windows
Canon’s cableless procedure for the PIXMA MX490 and MX492 was documented on 23 July 2024. It transfers the router information through the setup process without requiring a network cable.
- On the printer, open Setup.
- Choose Wireless LAN setup.
- Select Other setup, then choose Cableless setup.
- On the Windows computer, sign in as an administrator and run Canon’s printer driver/software package.
- When the installer asks for a connection type, select Wireless LAN Connection.
- Choose the option for connection through a wireless router.
- Select Cableless setup and continue through the on-screen prompts.
- Provide the router’s SSID and network key or passphrase when requested, then wait for setup to finish.
The computer and printer must be within range of the router during setup. If the installer cannot find the printer, verify the SSID and passphrase, repeat the printer’s Wireless LAN and Cableless setup sequence, and run the Canon package again. A USB installation can be used instead when wireless setup is not practical.
Fix common “driver unavailable” and reinstall problems
The installer will not start
Confirm that the download completed and that you are running the Canon EXE rather than a browser shortcut or an incomplete file. Sign in as an administrator, close other printer installers and launch the EXE again. If Windows displays a security warning, verify that the file came from Canon before allowing it to run.

Setup stops while waiting for the printer
Check that the MX490 is powered on and connected by the method selected in the installer. For USB, try a direct port instead of a hub and reconnect the cable when the setup screen requests it. For wireless, repeat the printer’s Cableless setup sequence and confirm the router credentials. Canon’s documented remedy for a cancelled or interrupted connection stage is to run the installer again.
Printing works but scanning does not
Reinstall the MP Driver if you changed from a network connection to USB. Canon specifically identifies this connection change as a situation in which scan-button operation can stop. After reinstalling, verify that Windows sees the MX490 as a scanner and test from a scanning application as well as from the printer’s scan button.
Borderless or layout options behave unexpectedly
Canon’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 cautions say some borderless-printing and layout settings in the operating system’s standard print screen may not work as expected. Open the printer’s Printing Preferences window instead and select the required paper size, borderless option or layout there.

Windows still reports no driver
Remove the failed MX490 entry from Windows’ printer settings, restart the computer, and run the Canon MP Driver installer again. Reconnect the printer only when the installer asks. If another printer package is controlling the same USB port or queue, remove that conflicting entry first. Do not install the XPS package as a substitute for the standard MP Driver.

MP Driver versus the optional XPS driver
Use this distinction before downloading a second package:

The XPS package is 17.95 MB. Install it only for a specific XPS requirement; adding it will not repair a missing or incorrectly installed MP Driver.

Canon’s Printer Firmware Updater (Windows) for MX490 series Ver. 1.0 targets printer firmware version 4.040. The 21.41 MB updater requires a USB cable and a computer. Canon does not say that every MX490 owner needs this update, so do not treat it as a routine replacement for the driver.

- Connect the printer directly to the computer with USB and keep the printer powered throughout the update.
- Close print jobs and other Canon utilities.
- Run the firmware updater EXE and follow its prompts exactly.
- Wait for the updater to report completion before disconnecting USB or switching off the printer.
If the updater is offered as a response to a known issue, record the existing firmware and the target version before starting. A firmware update changes the printer itself; it does not install the Windows print and scan driver.

Use Canon’s manuals for model-specific controls
Canon’s Windows user-manual page lists a 4.52 MB manual last updated 3 March 2017. It covers basic product functions and points to an online manual for advanced functions. Canon also hosts a printable Windows PDF manual, 15.25 MB, last updated 15 January 2015.
These manuals explain control-panel menus, paper handling, wireless settings and scanning procedures, but they are reference documents rather than driver packages. Use the MP Driver for Windows integration and the manuals when you need the exact button sequence on the printer.
Verify the installation
- In Windows printer settings, confirm that the PIXMA MX490 appears without an error badge.
- Print a test page using the Canon printer entry.
- Open Windows’ scanning interface or a Canon scanning utility and complete a preview scan.
- For wireless use, confirm that the printer and computer are connected to the same router network.
- Open Printing Preferences and check paper size, orientation and borderless settings there rather than relying only on the basic print dialog.
Keep the downloaded installer in a clearly named folder if you may need to reinstall. Since Canon has ended ongoing product support, retaining the verified Canon package and your connection details can save time if Windows later removes the printer entry.
