What to Do if Social Media Is Affecting Your Child’s Eating Habits or Body Image

Talk with your child calmly about what they are seeing and how it makes them feel, then work together to reduce distressing content and strengthen healthy family routines. Contact the child’s pediatrician promptly if eating, exercise, sleep, mood, friendships or daily functioning change significantly.

Start with a calm conversation

A change in eating, exercise or body confidence can make a parent want to confiscate a phone immediately. A better first step is curiosity. Choose a quiet moment when neither of you is rushing, and begin with what you have noticed rather than an accusation.

  • “I’ve noticed meals have been harder lately. How have you been feeling about food and your body?”
  • “What kinds of posts are you seeing, and which ones leave you feeling good or bad?”
  • “Do you feel pressure to look a certain way online or to post only your best pictures?”
  • “What do you think about images that may be edited, filtered or posed?”

Listen longer than you speak. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping communication open over time; one conversation does not have to solve the problem. Thank your child for telling you, even if the content seems harmless to you. Avoid mocking a creator, trend or friend, because your child may then hide what they are watching.

Explain that online images can be selected, posed, filtered or digitally altered, and that influencer posts may leave out ordinary meals, medical history, advertising relationships or the effort behind a particular appearance. Make the point without suggesting that every creator is deceptive. The goal is to help your child ask, “Who made this, what might be missing, and is this trustworthy health advice?”

Some material deserves particular caution. The AAP identifies ultra-low-calorie plans and extreme body-building content as examples that can encourage unhealthy behavior or aggravate an existing eating disorder. Do not deliberately show your child dangerous posts to prove a point; discuss content they have already encountered and let a clinician guide conversations about symptoms.

Understand what social media may—and may not—be doing

Social media is not automatically harmful. Young people can use it for friendship, learning, creativity and support. The effect varies with the child’s age, vulnerabilities, strengths, platform, content and pattern of use. A feed may amplify body comparison for one child while helping another find a supportive community. It is therefore more accurate to say social media can affect eating or body image, or may contribute to difficulties, than to claim it caused your child’s symptoms.

How media fits into the day matters as much as the number of minutes. Scrolling late at night can displace sleep; constant comparison can displace confidence-building activities; and online conflict can affect appetite or mood. In 2022, 35% of U.S. teenagers ages 13 to 17 reported using social media “almost constantly,” according to a Pew Research Center figure reported by the AAP in 2026. That statistic describes use, not eating-disorder or body-image causation, and it does not apply automatically to children in other countries or age groups.

Look at the whole pattern: what your child sees, when they use it, how they feel afterward and what offline activities have been crowded out. This broader view prevents a single app or post from becoming the only explanation.

Make the feed less harmful together

If your child is willing, do the changes side by side rather than taking over the account. Platform labels differ, but the functions below are common across major services.

  1. Mark unwanted posts. Use “Not interested,” “Dislike” or the equivalent feedback control on posts that trigger comparison, shame or pressure.
  2. Block or mute accounts. Remove creators and discussion threads that promote starvation, purging, unsafe supplements, compulsive exercise or relentless body checking.
  3. Filter words and hashtags. Add terms your child finds upsetting, where the platform offers hidden-word or keyword controls.
  4. Reset recommendations. Some services let users clear viewing history or reset a recommendation feed. Follow the platform’s current in-app instructions, because menus change.
  5. Choose supportive material. Follow credible, body-respectful and eating-disorder-recovery accounts if your child wants them. A supportive feed should not require constant weight monitoring or before-and-after images.
  6. Review notifications. Turn off alerts that pull your child back into comparison loops, especially during homework, meals and the hour before sleep.

These controls can influence recommendations but cannot guarantee that harmful material disappears. New accounts, shared posts and searches may reintroduce it. Recheck the feed after a week and ask whether the changes helped, rather than treating the first attempt as a test your child can fail.

“What I Eat in a Day” videos illustrate why context matters. One may show balanced meals; another may normalize dangerously low intake. Ask who made the video, whether portions or snacks are omitted, whether the creator is selling something and whether a qualified health professional supports the advice. Do not ask your child to copy a creator’s menu or to report every calorie.

Build protective habits at home

Children notice how adults speak about bodies and food. A home that treats weight as a measure of worth can intensify online pressure, even when parents have good intentions.

  • Do not discuss dieting, calories or “earning” food during meals.
  • Skip labels such as “good” and “bad” for foods. Talk instead about taste, variety, culture, enjoyment and how different foods support an active life.
  • Do not make body size a scorecard for health, attractiveness or character.
  • Offer regular shared meals when practical, without forcing a child to clean a plate or using food as punishment.
  • Encourage movement for energy, enjoyment, strength and stress relief, not as compensation for eating.

Keep sleep, school, in-person friendships, hobbies and unstructured play visible in the weekly routine. Invite your child into activities where competence is not judged by appearance: music, art, volunteering, gaming with friends, sport for fun or time outdoors. These are not substitutes for treatment, but they reduce the chance that an online appearance standard becomes the child’s main source of identity.

Create a family media plan that fits your child

The AAP recommends a whole-family approach rather than rules aimed only at the child. Its free Family Media Plan helps families agree on expectations, and the 2026 “5 Cs” framework offers a useful lens:

5 Cs question What to discuss A practical example
Child Age, temperament, strengths, sensitivities and current stress A younger child may need co-viewing; a teen may need privacy plus regular check-ins.
Content What the child watches, who creates it and how it affects mood Unfollow appearance-focused accounts and add interests unrelated to bodies.
Calm Whether media is being used to regulate difficult feelings Identify offline calming options such as music, a walk, breathing or talking with someone trusted.
Crowds out What media replaces Protect sleep, meals, schoolwork, friendships and movement before adding more restrictions.
Communication How the family will revisit rules and concerns Schedule a short weekly check-in and let the child suggest adjustments.

Adults should follow the same basic standards they set. Put phones away during meals if that is the family agreement, avoid scrolling while talking and explain when work requires an exception. Collaborative rules are more credible than surveillance that a parent does not follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down a few specific agreements: media-free meals, a charging place outside bedrooms, what to do after encountering upsetting content, and which trusted adults the child can contact. Revisit the plan after a school change, illness, sports season or other major stressor.

Know when a pediatrician should be involved

Contact your child’s pediatrician promptly when online experiences appear connected with a meaningful change in health or daily life. The AAP specifically lists:

  • dramatic changes in eating habits;
  • extreme or obsessive workouts;
  • trouble sleeping;
  • loss of interest in friends or usual activities;
  • persistent worries;
  • increased isolation; and
  • signs of suicidal thinking.

You do not need to prove that social media caused the change before calling. Tell the clinician what you observed, when it began, what online material concerns you and whether there have been changes in weight, energy, concentration, menstruation, injuries or school attendance. The pediatrician can assess medical and mental-health risks and refer your family to appropriate eating-disorder, behavioral-health or nutrition professionals.

Do not wait for a feed reset or a family-media meeting if your child may be in immediate danger, has expressed suicidal intent or cannot stay safe. Seek emergency or crisis help available in your location now, and remain with the child while arranging help. Remove immediate means of self-harm when you can do so safely and tell another trusted adult.

What you are seeing First response Next step
Your child reports comparison or discomfort but daily routines are stable Listen, explain edited imagery and curate the feed together. Set a check-in date and protect sleep, meals and offline activities.
Content repeatedly promotes restrictive eating or compulsive exercise Block, mute and filter the material; avoid debating the creator’s appearance. Tell the pediatrician what your child is viewing and ask for guidance.
Eating, exercise, sleep, mood or friendships have changed noticeably Stay nonjudgmental and avoid weight-focused rules or monitoring. Contact the pediatrician promptly; bring a timeline of changes.
Your child mentions suicidal thoughts or cannot stay safe Stay with them and seek emergency or crisis help locally. Do not postpone help for account changes or a later appointment.

Age-aware ways to help

Children who are not yet teenagers

Use co-viewing and simple language. Ask what a character or creator is trying to sell, and point out that costumes, camera angles and filters change appearances. Keep accounts private where possible, use child-safety settings and make most media use occur in shared spaces. Focus on kindness, abilities and how the body helps a child play and learn rather than on shape or size.

Early adolescents

Puberty can make comparison especially intense. Let your child have a voice in feed changes and household rules while maintaining adult responsibility for safety. Discuss advertising, editing and sponsored posts. A short, recurring conversation is usually more effective than a single lecture after a problem appears.

Older adolescents

Respect increasing independence and privacy, but agree on warning signs that will trigger adult help. Ask whether online communities make the teen feel supported or pressured. If the teen is willing, identify a trusted clinician, school counselor or relative they can approach without having to explain everything to a parent first.

What not to do

  • Do not shame your child for following a particular account or trend.
  • Do not make a sudden, indefinite phone confiscation the only intervention.
  • Do not put the child on a diet, impose calorie targets or require extra exercise in response to online content.
  • Do not weigh the child repeatedly or comment on body changes as proof that rules are working.
  • Do not assume reducing screen time alone will resolve an eating disorder, anxiety or depression.
  • Do not promise that blocking a few accounts will remove every harmful recommendation.

A restriction may be appropriate for immediate safety, but explain its purpose, set a review date and pair it with conversation and professional support. Punishment can drive secret use; a clear safety plan keeps the focus on the child’s wellbeing.

Set realistic expectations

Improvement is usually a process: identify the pressure, change the environment, strengthen offline support and obtain clinical care when needed. Keep notes on concrete observations rather than policing every post. Record sleep, meals, exercise, mood and social participation in broad terms, and share that pattern with the pediatrician. Celebrate help-seeking, flexibility and time spent doing valued activities, not a particular weight or appearance.

The AAP’s current guidance emphasizes that digital media can offer learning and connection when children’s wellbeing is treated as the priority. As Tiffany Munzer, MD, FAAP, lead author of the AAP’s 2026 digital ecosystems policy, put it: “When digital media are designed with children’s wellbeing as the north star, young people can experience benefits, such as learning and social connection.” Your family’s goal is not a perfect feed; it is a child who can recognize pressure, ask for help and maintain health, relationships and a sense of worth offline as well as online.
