If Secure Folder has vanished from your Samsung phone, check whether it is hidden before assuming it was deleted. Open Quick Settings or the Secure Folder page in Settings; if the feature is missing from Settings too, your Galaxy model may not support it. If the folder appears but will not unlock, the right next step depends on whether you forgot its PIN, pattern, or password—or whether an app inside the folder is crashing.
Start by locating where the problem occurs: the Apps screen, Settings, the lock prompt, or the share panel. Those are separate situations, and a fix for one may not help another. Avoid clearing data or uninstalling Secure Folder while troubleshooting, because either action can put its contents at risk.

First, identify what “missing” or “won’t open” means
Secure Folder problems fall into different categories, and each has a different fix:
- Missing from the Apps screen: The folder may simply be hidden. Check Quick Settings and its Settings page.
- Missing from Settings as well: Your specific Galaxy device may not support Secure Folder.
- Visible but locked: You may need to enter the existing lock credential or use Samsung’s eligible account-reset flow.
- Folder opens, but an app inside crashes: Troubleshoot that app rather than resetting the folder.
- Missing only from the share panel: Adjust Secure Folder’s share-panel and background-activity settings.
Menu names and locations can differ by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s US guide says, “If your device does not support Secure Folder, the feature will not appear in the Security and privacy menu.” Samsung’s Secure Folder guide explains the access and visibility controls.

Keep the distinction between a hidden icon and an unavailable feature in mind. If the feature is present in Settings, use that route to reach its controls. If it is absent there, repeatedly searching the Apps screen or share sheet is unlikely to resolve a device-support limitation.
If Secure Folder is missing from the Apps screen
A hidden icon does not necessarily mean the folder or its contents have been deleted. Try these access routes first.
Check the Quick Settings tile
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to expand Quick Settings.
- Look for the Secure Folder tile and tap it. The tile can reveal or hide the folder.
- If the tile is not shown, edit the Quick Settings buttons and add Secure Folder if it is available.
The tile is a visibility control, not evidence that the folder has been removed. If tapping it changes whether the folder is shown, check the Apps screen again. Quick Settings layouts can vary, so look in the button-editing view if you do not see the tile among the buttons currently displayed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurn the Apps-screen icon back on in Settings
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Turn on Add Secure Folder to Apps screen.
This Settings route can also open Secure Folder when its Apps-screen icon is hidden. Samsung notes that a grayed-out Secure Folder option may mean the folder has been hidden from both the Apps screen and Edge panel. See Samsung’s troubleshooting steps for being unable to access Secure Folder.
If you reach Secure Folder settings but do not see the icon afterward, check that Add Secure Folder to Apps screen is enabled. It is this switch—not simply the presence of a folder in Settings—that controls whether the icon appears in Apps. The exact wording or Settings path may vary by software version.
If Secure Folder is missing from Settings
Check whether your particular Galaxy model supports the feature. If Secure Folder does not appear in the Security and privacy menu, Samsung says the device may not support it; Samsung UK also cautions that some older models may no longer support Secure Folder. The feature’s availability should not be inferred from another Galaxy phone’s menus. Samsung’s UK Secure Folder guide includes the older-model caveat.

This gives you a useful dividing line: if Settings contains Secure Folder, investigate visibility and access controls; if it does not, first verify support for that specific model. Menu locations differ across devices and software versions, but Samsung says an unsupported phone will not show the feature in the Security and privacy menu.

If Secure Folder appears but rejects your PIN, pattern, or password
If you have forgotten the lock credential, enter a credential and select Forgot only if that option appears at the prompt. Samsung’s recovery route requires that Reset with Samsung account was enabled when the lock was set up; you must then sign in to the Samsung account.
If Forgot does not appear, Samsung says this account-reset option was not enabled, and access cannot be recovered through that route. Repeatedly guessing the credential is not a recovery method. Samsung describes the conditions in its Secure Folder guide.
In other words, having a Samsung account by itself does not guarantee that you can reset a forgotten Secure Folder lock. The reset setting must have been enabled in advance, and the account sign-in is part of the recovery flow. If the prompt does not offer Forgot, do not assume that reinstalling the feature or clearing its data will restore access; those steps can instead risk the contents.
If Secure Folder opens but an app inside crashes
A crashing app is different from being unable to open Secure Folder. Samsung recommends removing and reinstalling the affected app inside the folder:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Secure Folder and uninstall the affected app from within it.
- Install the app again from the Play Store.
- Add it back to Secure Folder and test it.
- If it still fails, contact the app’s developer.
Follow this route for an app-specific problem rather than clearing Secure Folder data or treating the whole folder as inaccessible. Samsung’s access troubleshooting guide covers app crashes separately.

Keep the scope of the fix narrow: the instruction is to remove and reinstall the affected app inside Secure Folder, then add it back and test it. If the app still crashes after that, Samsung points readers to the app developer rather than suggesting that they reset or remove the entire Secure Folder.
If Secure Folder is missing only from the share panel
The share panel has its own visibility setting, which Samsung says is off by default. In Secure Folder settings, enable Allow background activity while locked, then turn on Show Secure Folder apps in share panel under the relevant security settings. Samsung notes that if the folder is hidden or background activity while locked is disabled, it may be visible only when unlocked.
Use Samsung’s share-panel troubleshooting guide for the settings specific to this symptom.

If you can open Secure Folder normally but cannot see its apps while choosing something to share, check the share-panel option and the background-activity setting. Samsung says the share-panel option is off by default, so its absence there does not by itself mean the folder is unsupported or deleted.
Protect your data before trying removal or reset steps
Do not start with Clear data. Samsung UK warns that clearing Secure Folder data deletes the data inside it. Uninstalling Secure Folder can also remove contents. Samsung’s US instructions say you can choose to move media files out before uninstalling, but that option should not be treated as protection for every type of Secure Folder data.
Samsung says new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported. Data from an older Samsung-account backup may still be restorable, and Smart Switch may be used to transfer Secure Folder to another phone. Neither route guarantees that your current contents are included: restoration depends on an existing backup, and transfer depends on the circumstances. Check Samsung’s backup, transfer, and uninstall guidance before taking a destructive step.

These options are conditional, not a substitute for opening a hidden folder. A previous backup may help only if one exists and contains the data you need. Smart Switch is documented as a transfer option, but it is not a promise that every current item will transfer in every situation. Treat any removal or data-clearing action as potentially destructive, and do not assume that moving media files out covers all Secure Folder contents.

Check whether files were moved out after an uninstall
If Secure Folder was uninstalled and files were moved out, Samsung’s troubleshooting page recommends checking My Files > Internal storage > Download > Secure Folder. This check is for files that may have been moved during uninstall; it is not a way to recover an installed folder that is simply locked.
Use this path only for that specific circumstance: Secure Folder was uninstalled and files were moved out. It is not an unlock method and should not be confused with a way to browse the contents of an installed, locked folder.

- Icon absent, but Secure Folder is in Settings: Open it from Settings and enable Add Secure Folder to Apps screen; also check its Quick Settings tile.
- Secure Folder absent from the Security and privacy menu: Verify support for your Galaxy model before looking for a hidden icon.
- Lock prompt appears, but the credential is forgotten: Use Forgot only if offered, and only if Samsung-account reset was enabled earlier.
- Folder opens, but one app fails: Reinstall that app within Secure Folder, then contact its developer if needed.
- Folder is absent only when sharing: Check background activity while locked and the share-panel display setting.
If none of these descriptions matches, first note which screen or action fails. Distinguishing a missing Apps icon from an absent Settings entry, a rejected credential, an app crash, or a share-panel omission keeps you from trying a more destructive fix for the wrong problem. Samsung’s guidance supports different steps for each symptom; it does not promise that a reset or transfer will recover data in every case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing Secure Folder icon mean it was deleted?
Not necessarily. The Apps-screen icon may be hidden. Check the Secure Folder Quick Settings tile or open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder, then enable Add Secure Folder to Apps screen if available.
What if Secure Folder is not listed in Settings?
Samsung says the feature will not appear in the Security and privacy menu if the device does not support it. Check whether your specific Galaxy model supports Secure Folder; some older models may no longer support it.
Best Value
Can I reset Secure Folder if I forgot its PIN or password?
Only if the recovery option is offered. Samsung’s Forgot flow requires that Reset with Samsung account was enabled when the lock was set up, and you must sign in to that account. If the prompt does not show Forgot, this reset route is unavailable.
Will clearing Secure Folder data fix access problems?
Do not use it as an early troubleshooting step. Samsung warns that clearing Secure Folder data deletes the data inside it. Uninstalling Secure Folder can also remove contents, so consider those actions destructive.
Can I restore or transfer my Secure Folder data?
Samsung no longer supports making new Secure Folder backups, but data from a previous Samsung-account backup may still be restorable. Samsung also documents Smart Switch for transferring Secure Folder to another phone. Neither option guarantees that your current contents are included.

Samsung says the share-panel display option is off by default. In Secure Folder settings, enable Allow background activity while locked and turn on Show Secure Folder apps in share panel. A hidden folder or disabled background activity while locked may be visible only when unlocked.
The Bottom Line
If Secure Folder is missing from Apps, first check Quick Settings and the Secure Folder Settings page; the icon may only be hidden. If it is absent from Settings too, verify that your Galaxy model supports the feature. For a forgotten lock, use Samsung-account recovery only when Forgot is offered. Avoid clearing data or uninstalling until you understand the data-loss risk.
