Oviraptorosaurs vs. Other Theropods: What Their Beaks and Teeth Reveal About Diet

Oviraptorosaurs did not all eat the same way. Some early forms, including Incisivosaurus, retained teeth, while many later oviraptorids and caenagnathids had toothless jaws with reconstructed beaks. Tooth wear and jaw studies point to plant eating in at least some species, but beaks and strong bites do not prove a single menu: diet varied, and many proposed foods remain hypotheses.

What makes oviraptorosaurs different from other theropods?

Oviraptorosaurs were a group of theropod dinosaurs whose jaws changed substantially over evolutionary time. Some early-diverging members retained teeth; many later oviraptorids and caenagnathids lost them and had toothless jaws covered in life by a keratinous beak, inferred from the shape and texture of the underlying bones. Because soft keratin rarely fossilizes in non-avian theropods, the beak covering is usually reconstructed rather than directly preserved.

That variation matters when using skulls to infer diet. A tooth can preserve wear that records contact with food, while a toothless jaw requires researchers to infer how an animal processed food from the shape of its bones and the forces its muscles could generate. Neither kind of evidence gives a complete menu by itself. Oviraptorosaur anatomy supports dietary variety, with substantial evidence for plant consumption in some members, rather than one diet shared by every species.

The comparison with other theropods is useful because plant eating evolved in more than one branch of the group. Ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs, for example, serve as functional comparisons in a bite-force study of oviraptorosaur skulls. They help put estimated jaw performance in context, but they were not identical animals or necessarily ecological equivalents. A similar mechanical feature can have different uses in different species, and a difference in bite force does not by itself establish what either animal ate.

Which oviraptorosaurs had teeth?

Early tooth-bearing forms

Incisivosaurus gauthieri, Caudipteryx zoui, and Protarchaeopteryx robusta are examples of oviraptorosaurs that retained teeth. Their presence shows that the group’s evolutionary history was not simply a shift from toothed carnivores to uniformly toothless plant eaters. Tooth-bearing early forms and later beaked forms provide different kinds of clues, and those clues need to be assessed species by species.

Teeth can be informative in more than one way. Their shape and arrangement can help indicate how food was grasped or processed, while worn surfaces can record repeated contact over time. Yet tooth presence alone is not a dietary verdict: a toothed animal is not automatically a meat eater, just as a toothless animal is not automatically a herbivore. In theropods more broadly, changes in tooth shape sometimes accompanied evolutionary shifts toward plant consumption before teeth were lost altogether. That broader pattern is a reason to examine specific anatomy and wear, not a shortcut for assigning every species a menu.

What the worn teeth of Incisivosaurus suggest

Incisivosaurus is especially informative because its teeth have wear facets. A 2022 study of jaw-muscle anatomy describes that wear as a strong indicator of herbivory. Wear is more direct evidence of repeated contact during feeding than the mere presence of a beak, although it still supports an interpretation about this animal rather than proving that all oviraptorosaurs ate plants.

Why is that distinction important? A worn tooth records a physical interaction: the surface was repeatedly rubbed or pressed against something during feeding. Researchers can use that trace to assess a feeding interpretation, but wear does not preserve the identity of the food. It does not name a plant, reveal how often the animal ate it, or show that every member of its lineage had the same diet. The strongest conclusion is therefore taxon-specific: the wear on Incisivosaurus is consistent with herbivory and has been treated as strong evidence for it.

What can a beak reveal—and what can it not?

A beak identifies a jaw structure and suggests how food could have been grasped, cut, or processed; it does not identify the food on its own. Beaks evolved in multiple theropod lineages, including lineages with different diets. A rule such as “beak equals herbivore” therefore oversimplifies the evidence. Researchers get a stronger picture by combining jaw shape and mechanics with independent clues such as tooth wear or material associated with a specimen.

In many derived oviraptorosaurs, the absence of teeth means there are no tooth surfaces to compare for wear. Researchers instead study the depth and proportions of the mandible, the attachment area for jaw muscles, the shape of the jaw joint, and the reconstructed beak. These anatomical features can indicate how an animal was capable of biting or moving its jaws. They do not show exactly what it ate on a particular occasion.

The outer beak itself needs a qualification. Keratin is rarely preserved in non-avian theropods, so the beak is generally inferred from bony correlates—the features of the skull that indicate where a keratinous covering would have fitted. Saying that a fossil animal had a “beak” is a reasonable description of the reconstruction, but readers should not assume that the complete soft covering is visible in most specimens. The preserved bones and the reconstructed tissue are different kinds of evidence.

This is why beak shape should be treated as a clue to capability rather than a food label. A beak may have helped an animal crop or grip material, while the jaw beneath it could have generated forces useful for processing food. But without direct evidence of a meal or additional clues such as tooth wear or associated food remains, a beak cannot tell us whether a particular animal ate leaves, fruit, eggs, mollusks, or a mixture.

How did researchers estimate oviraptorosaur bite performance?

A 2022 analysis digitally reconstructed jaw muscles in four skulls: those of the oviraptorids Citipati, Khaan, and Conchoraptor, and the toothed Incisivosaurus. The study considered muscle anatomy, estimated bite force, and gape—the amount by which the jaws could open. Its results indicate that the oviraptorids studied could produce stronger bites than the ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs used as comparisons, while having a more restricted gape than estimates for carnivorous theropods.

In a reconstruction of this kind, the bones provide the framework for estimating where muscles attached and how they might have acted. The resulting bite-force estimate is a model of potential performance, not a direct measurement from a living dinosaur. Gape is a separate part of the comparison: it describes how widely the jaws could open, not how forcefully they could close. Considering both helps avoid reducing a complex feeding system to one number or one feature.

These are model-based estimates, not measurements of living animals or observations of feeding. The authors proposed that strong bites combined with a relatively restricted gape could have been compatible with processing tough vegetation. That is a plausible functional interpretation, not proof of a particular plant or a conclusion that every species in the group was herbivorous. The comparison groups are useful for interpreting jaw performance, but they should not be treated as ecologically identical to the oviraptorosaurs.

The four skulls also matter as a limit on how far the results can be generalized. Three represent oviraptorids and one is Incisivosaurus; the study does not directly model every oviraptorosaur species. Its findings offer a window into the specimens examined and a way to compare their jaw mechanics with other theropods. They do not establish that every toothless form had the same bite, gape, or feeding behavior.

A strong bite can be compatible with several kinds of food processing. Tough plant material is one interpretation proposed for the studied oviraptorids, but a forceful bite does not uniquely identify plants or demonstrate shell-cracking. The same caution applies to restricted gape: it adds information about jaw movement, but it is not a stand-alone dietary test. Researchers need to combine mechanics with other evidence and keep the difference between capability and actual behavior clear.

Did oviraptorids and caenagnathids use their jaws differently?

A 2017 functional interpretation of Gigantoraptor and related jaw anatomy proposed different processing styles in the two major toothless lineages. It suggested that oviraptorid jaws were relatively suited to forceful biting, potentially including crushing-related actions, while caenagnathid mandibles showed features interpreted as more adapted for shearing.

The same work proposed that caenagnathid jaw joints may have permitted fore-and-aft, or propalinal, movement during food processing. These are functional hypotheses drawn from anatomy. The authors noted that further quantitative jaw modeling was needed, so the proposed motions and processing specializations should not be presented as directly observed behavior. In particular, a jaw capable of forceful biting does not establish that eggs or shellfish were its food.

Shearing and forceful biting describe different proposed ways of applying the jaws, not fixed menus. A shearing-oriented interpretation suggests a way material might have been cut or divided during processing; it does not identify the material. Likewise, a stronger bite could have helped handle tough food, but it does not prove that the animal crushed any particular object. The contrast between lineages is valuable precisely because it indicates that “toothless oviraptorosaur” is not one simple mechanical category.

The Gigantoraptor interpretation should also be kept in its proper evidentiary category. Jaw shape and joint structure can suggest possible movements and loading patterns, but the animal’s soft tissues and feeding actions are not directly observed. Further quantitative modeling would be needed to test the proposed specialization. Until then, it is more accurate to say the anatomy has been interpreted as consistent with different processing styles than to describe those styles as settled facts.

What foods have been proposed?

Researchers have considered plant foods as well as hard or animal foods when interpreting oviraptorosaur fossils. The evidence does not establish one exclusive diet for the entire group. Each clue belongs to the specimen or taxon where it was found, and suggestions about a possible food should not be confused with proof that it was eaten regularly.

  • Plants: Worn teeth in Incisivosaurus have been interpreted as evidence of herbivory. Gastroliths associated with Caudipteryx have also been discussed in connection with plant consumption, and seeds were reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen.
  • Hard or animal foods: Eggs and mollusks have been proposed, alongside nuts and other hard foods. These remain possible interpretations rather than confirmed, group-wide staples; a robust beak or a crushing-capable bite alone does not identify which food was eaten.
  • Fruit in a newly described species: A Nature Communications report published on 10 October 2026 describes Infernogallus jamesi as a diminutive caenagnathid with a nearly complete articulated skull. The authors interpret its skull as evidence of specialized herbivory and infer that fleshy angiosperm fruits likely made up a large part of its diet. That is the authors’ interpretation, not direct observation of its meals.

These examples represent different strengths and kinds of evidence. Worn teeth are physical traces on a feeding structure. Gastroliths and seeds are associated evidence that has been discussed in relation to plant consumption. A jaw-mechanics reconstruction, by contrast, estimates what an animal may have been capable of doing. None should be made to carry more weight than it can: an association or functional inference is not the same as a fossilized meal directly identifying a regular diet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Caudipteryx, the presence of gastroliths has been discussed as supporting plant consumption, but the association is not a universal dietary marker for all oviraptorosaurs. The seeds reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen provide another taxon-specific clue. Together with Incisivosaurus‘ worn teeth, these observations make plant consumption a substantial part of the discussion. They still do not demonstrate that all oviraptorosaurs were strict herbivores or tell us the exact proportions of plant and animal foods across the group.

The Nature Communications report dated 10 October 2026 adds a further proposed example: the authors describe Infernogallus jamesi as a diminutive caenagnathid with a nearly complete articulated skull and interpret it as a specialized herbivore, likely consuming fleshy angiosperm fruits. That interpretation is based on the skull as described in the report’s abstract-level account; no further methodological detail or direct observation of its meals should be inferred from that summary. It is an important proposed dietary specialization for one animal, not a resolution of the diets of all oviraptorosaurs.

Do oviraptorosaurs count as herbivores, then? The careful answer is that evidence supports herbivory in at least some members and makes plant consumption plausible for others, while the overall group may have included varied diets. “Herbivore” can be useful when attached to a named species and an explicit interpretation, as with the worn teeth of Incisivosaurus or the proposed fruit-heavy diet of Infernogallus. It is too broad as a blanket label for the entire group.

How do oviraptorosaurs compare with other theropods?

Group or example Jaw evidence What the evidence supports Key limit
Incisivosaurus Teeth with worn facets; included in a 2022 muscle reconstruction Tooth wear is described as a strong indicator of herbivory in this taxon Does not establish a uniform diet for the whole oviraptorosaur group
Studied oviraptorids: Citipati, Khaan, and Conchoraptor Toothless beaked jaws, reconstructed muscles, modeled bite force and gape The studied animals are estimated to have strong bites and relatively restricted gape; tough vegetation is one proposed use Biomechanical models infer capability, not observed feeding or a specific food
Caenagnathids Mandibular and jaw-joint features, including proposed fore-and-aft movement A 2017 interpretation suggests more shearing-oriented processing than in oviraptorids Further quantitative modeling is needed to test the proposed specialization
Ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs Comparison groups in the 2022 bite-force analysis The studied oviraptorids were estimated to bite more strongly than these groups They are functional comparisons, not identical ecological analogues
Carnivorous theropods Published gape estimates used for comparison The studied oviraptorids had a smaller estimated gape Gape alone does not identify diet or establish a direct ecological match

The comparison shows why “toothed” versus “beaked” is not enough to classify an animal’s diet. Tooth wear can offer evidence of food contact; muscle and jaw reconstructions estimate mechanical capability; and lineage-level differences suggest that related animals may have processed food differently. Combining these lines of evidence is more informative than treating any single skull feature as a dietary label.

It also shows why the title question cannot be answered by placing all other theropods into one opposing category. Oviraptorosaurs are themselves a diverse branch, and other theropod groups are diverse too. The relevant comparison is between specific kinds of evidence: retained teeth and their wear, reconstructed beaks and jaw muscles, bite and gape estimates, and differences in mandibular form. Ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs provide a performance comparison in the 2022 analysis, while carnivorous theropods provide a published gape comparison. Neither comparison alone assigns an ecological identity.

How should beak and tooth evidence be weighed?

A useful way to read a dietary claim is to ask three questions: which animal is being discussed, what kind of evidence supports the claim, and how far does that evidence reach? For Incisivosaurus, the key clue is worn teeth interpreted as evidence of herbivory. For the studied oviraptorids, the key evidence is digital muscle reconstruction and modeled jaw performance. For caenagnathids, the proposed shearing action and fore-and-aft movement come from functional interpretation of jaw anatomy. These are not interchangeable kinds of evidence.

It also helps to separate evidence of contact from evidence of capability. Tooth wear records repeated use of a tooth surface; associated seeds or gastroliths can support a dietary interpretation for a particular specimen; and a reconstructed bite force indicates a potential mechanical capacity. A capacity may be useful for several foods, and an associated object does not necessarily represent the animal’s whole diet. The more indirect the inference, the more careful the wording should be.

That caution does not mean the anatomy tells us nothing. The combination of tooth wear, associated material, and biomechanical reconstructions makes plant consumption a serious and well-supported part of the picture for at least some oviraptorosaurs. The evidence also leaves room for other foods and for differences among lineages. The most defensible synthesis is neither “they all ate plants” nor “the beak proves they cracked eggs,” but that anatomy points to varied feeding capabilities and taxon-specific dietary evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the strongest conclusion about their diet?

The evidence supports dietary diversity among oviraptorosaurs and substantial plant consumption in at least some members. Incisivosaurus provides a tooth-wear clue interpreted as herbivory; muscle and jaw studies suggest that some beaked forms could process tough foods; and proposed differences between oviraptorids and caenagnathids point to different ways of using their jaws. Other foods, including eggs and mollusks, remain proposals rather than demonstrated staples. It is not justified to call every oviraptorosaur a strict herbivore, or to treat a strong beak as proof of egg-cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did oviraptorosaurs eat?

There was probably no single menu for the whole group. Worn teeth in Incisivosaurus have been interpreted as strong evidence of herbivory, and plants have also been discussed in connection with Caudipteryx gastroliths and seeds reported from a Ningyuansaurus specimen. Eggs, mollusks, nuts, and other hard foods have been proposed, but these are not established group-wide staples.

Did oviraptorosaurs have teeth?

Some did. Early-diverging forms such as Incisivosaurus gauthieri, Caudipteryx zoui, and Protarchaeopteryx robusta retained teeth. Many later oviraptorids and caenagnathids were toothless and had beaked jaws.

Were oviraptorosaurs herbivores?

Plant eating is supported for at least some members, but calling every oviraptorosaur a strict herbivore goes beyond the evidence. Tooth wear, associated material, and jaw studies offer different clues, and proposed diets vary by taxon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a beak mean a dinosaur was an herbivore?

No. Beaks evolved in multiple theropod lineages, and beak presence alone does not identify a diet. Jaw shape, muscle mechanics, tooth wear, and other specimen-specific evidence give a more reliable picture.

Did oviraptorosaurs crack eggs with their beaks?

Eggs have been proposed as a possible food, but a robust beak or strong modeled bite does not prove egg-cracking. Jaw studies estimate capability rather than observe feeding, and eggs are not established as a group-wide staple.

What did bite-force studies show?

A 2022 study digitally reconstructed jaw muscles in Citipati, Khaan, Conchoraptor, and Incisivosaurus. The studied oviraptorids were estimated to bite more strongly than the ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs used for comparison, while having a more restricted gape than published carnivorous-theropod estimates. These are modeled results, not direct measurements or proof of a particular meal.

How might oviraptorids and caenagnathids have processed food differently?

A 2017 functional interpretation proposed relatively forceful biting in oviraptorids and more shearing-oriented mandibular features in caenagnathids, possibly including fore-and-aft jaw movement. These are hypotheses from anatomy, and further quantitative modeling was identified as necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Oviraptorosaur jaws reveal variation, not one universal diet. Early tooth-bearing animals such as Incisivosaurus preserve wear interpreted as evidence of herbivory, while studies of toothless beaked forms estimate how their jaws may have processed food. Plants are well supported in the dietary picture for at least some members; eggs and other hard foods remain proposals. A beak or a strong bite tells us about possible feeding mechanics, not a complete menu.
