If Chrome offers Relaunch, save any work and select it to finish installing the update. If the check fails, note the exact error before trying fixes: a blocked update server, a device policy, an unsupported operating system, and damaged installation files call for different steps.
Start with Chrome’s built-in update check
- Open the update page: Select More ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Wait for the check to finish. Chrome checks for updates on this page and normally downloads them in the background.
- Select Relaunch if it appears. Chrome applies the update when it restarts. Your regular tabs and windows are restored, but Incognito windows are not, so save anything important first.
If Chrome does not offer Relaunch, Google says the browser is already on the latest version available to that installation. That does not necessarily mean the operating system can receive newer Chrome versions: check the system requirements below if the device is old or the page reports an unsupported version. Use the error message to narrow down the cause
On the About Google Chrome page, note the full message or error number. Google lists these examples; they point to different parts of the update process rather than one universal failure.

Check whether the device is managed or the download is blocked
Work, school, or family-managed devices
If Chrome says updates are disabled by an administrator, or you do not have administrator rights, contact whoever manages the computer. Do not try to bypass an organization’s policy; the administrator may need to approve or install the update. Google also advises users who cannot complete reinstall steps to contact someone with administrator rights.
Firewall, antivirus, and parental controls
Review security software and network controls to make sure Chrome updates are allowed to connect. Google names tools.google.com and dl.google.com as domains that should not be blocked. If you change a rule, use the product’s own settings and follow your organization’s policy; do not disable protection wholesale just to test an update.

Restart and retry
After recording the error and checking obvious blocks, restart the computer and try More ⋮ > Help > About Google Chrome again. Google includes rebooting among possible fixes for updates that did not complete. If other sites are also failing to load, the issue may be broader than Chrome’s updater; Google’s connection and loading troubleshooting covers related checks.

Confirm that the operating system and processor are supported
Google’s support pages accessed on October 7, 2026 list these minimum requirements for current Chrome support. Requirements can change, so check Google’s current pages if your system is near a threshold.

These are Google’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every device configuration or distribution package will work. If Windows says the version is unsupported
On a supported Windows system, Chrome may be running in compatibility mode. Find the Chrome shortcut or program file, open its properties, choose the Compatibility tab, and clear Run this program in compatibility mode for if it is selected. Then reopen Chrome and check for updates again. Google lists compatibility mode as a possible reason a supported Windows installation is reported as unsupported.

Reinstall only if the checks above do not work
Google identifies missing Chrome files as one possible cause of persistent update problems. Reinstallation is more disruptive than a restart or settings check, so first confirm the operating system is supported and that you have the permissions needed to install software.
- Uninstall Chrome using your operating system’s normal app-removal method.
- Confirm that the computer meets Google’s system requirements.
- Download Chrome again from Google’s download and installation page, then run the installer.
- If the same error persists, Google suggests trying the standalone installer on Windows. On Mac, Google suggests downloading Google Software Update again and reinstalling it.
On Mac, the option to enable automatic updates for all users depends on Chrome’s installation location and your account permissions. If you cannot uninstall or reinstall Chrome, ask the device administrator rather than trying to work around the restriction. Google also documents an offline-install route for cases where the usual download cannot be completed on the target computer.
Use the platform’s update method
- Windows: Check About Google Chrome, close all Chrome windows and tabs, then select Relaunch if offered. If installation repeatedly fails, try Google’s standalone installer.
- Mac: Check About Google Chrome. When Chrome is installed in Applications, the page can offer automatic updates for all users; enabling them may require appropriate permissions. For persistent update errors, Google recommends reinstalling Google Software Update.
- Linux: Use the package manager for your distribution to update Chrome.
- Chromebook: Update ChromeOS; Chrome is updated with the operating system.
