Roadhog’s current game plan is to threaten close-range space, use Chain Hook when its displacement can be followed up, and recover with Take a Breather from a position that still offers cover. His live kit is not the 2023 rework configuration: Pig Pen is gone, classic Scrap Gun primary and secondary fire have returned, and Chain Hook now has an eight-second cooldown. This guide reflects Blizzard’s Roadhog hero page and balance notes available as of October 7, 2026.
What changed in Roadhog’s current kit?
Blizzard’s Roadhog hero page lists him as a tank with Scrap Gun, Chain Hook, Take a Breather, and Whole Hog. The current kit has no Pig Pen. Blizzard removed it when the August 29, 2025 update restored classic primary and secondary Scrap Gun fire and moved Take a Breather to Ability 2. The same update introduced Pulled Pork; the current hero page lists its overhealth maximum as 300.

The distinction matters because older guides may describe a resource-based Breather or a Hook-and-trap combo. Those are not the current setup described by Blizzard’s hero page. The current Scrap Gun’s primary fire is a short-range spread shot; secondary fire sends a medium-range projectile that explodes into the short-range primary fire.
How should you use Chain Hook?
Think of Hook as a commitment, not a button to press whenever it is available. Its value is the displacement: it pulls a targeted enemy to Roadhog, where close-range Scrap Gun fire and allied follow-up may make the new position dangerous. A pull is not itself a guaranteed elimination.

- Choose a useful target. Look for an opponent who is separated, exposed, or about to cross into Hook range. Consider where the target will land and whether allies can act on the displacement.
- Check the follow-up before throwing. If the target will land behind protection or your team cannot pressure them, the pull may spend Hook without producing meaningful pressure.
- Hook, then use primary fire at close range. The pulled target is brought near Roadhog, where the short-range primary fire is the natural gun follow-up. Adjust to what happens in the fight rather than assuming the sequence always secures a kill.
- After a miss or low-value pull, play as if your threat is reduced. Use cover and gun pressure while Hook is unavailable; do not step forward as though it were ready.
Blizzard’s April 2026 balance update raised Chain Hook’s cooldown from 6 to 8 seconds. The notes say the changes were intended to make the combo less frequent and Hook use more deliberate. Because the ability’s value depends on the pull and its follow-up, that longer cooldown makes a low-value attempt costly. The cited sources do not establish universal damage breakpoints or one-shot outcomes; those depend on factors such as target defenses, mitigation, movement, and allied actions.
Where should Roadhog stand?
Use corners, choke points, and constrained angles where enemies approaching or crossing can be threatened by close-range fire and Hook. This is a tactical inference from the weapon’s range and Hook’s pull, not a Blizzard rule or map-specific tested route.

- Keep a retreat path. Hold a position from which you can return to cover after exposing yourself to fire or using Hook.
- Limit the angles that can hit you. A corner can reduce how many opponents can focus Roadhog at once; avoid walking into several enemies’ crossfire just to seek a Hook.
- Threaten space even when Hook is unavailable. Use gun pressure to make close approaches costly, but avoid treating that pressure as a substitute for Hook’s displacement.
- Judge a pull by where the target ends up. A pull matters when the new position creates an opportunity for your team, not merely because the ability connected.
Roadhog does not have a barrier in the current kit listed by Blizzard. His frontline presence comes from threatening damage, pulling opponents out of position, and using his own healing and damage reduction—not from shielding teammates from all incoming fire.

Take a Breather heals Roadhog and reduces the damage he takes. Use it when incoming pressure makes that defensive effect useful and the recovery can help you continue contesting space. Try to use it from cover or near a safe retreat: activating it after moving into an exposed position can leave opponents able to keep focusing you. The right moment depends on enemy burst, allied support, and the fight, so a fixed timing rule would be misleading.

Blizzard’s August 29, 2025 notes moved Take a Breather to Ability 2. They also describe Ability 1, primary fire, and secondary fire as cancellation inputs when the ability is toggled, with a 0.6-second minimum before cancellation. Blizzard’s hero page notes that displayed PC keys are defaults and can be changed, so check your own bindings and toggle settings rather than relying on a key listed for another player.

| Perk | Effect listed by Blizzard | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap Hook (minor) | Hook hits reload 2 ammo. | Consider it when you expect to connect Hooks and want the ammunition to support immediate follow-up. |
| Shrapnel Launcher (minor) | Extends secondary-fire range by 50% and tightens its burst spread by 25%. | Consider it when you often need to pressure opponents beyond primary-fire range. |
| Hogdrogen Exposure (major) | Take a Breather heals nearby allies for 50% of its healing. | Consider it when teammates are likely to be nearby and added team sustain is useful. It is not a replacement for support healing or a reason to use Breather in unsafe exposure. |
| Pulled Pork (major) | Hook grants overhealth based on pull distance, up to 300. | Consider it when longer pulls are realistic and the added personal durability is useful. |
Choose around the fight you expect: its engagement distance, your likelihood of landing Hook, how close allies stay, and whether personal or team sustain matters more. These recommendations follow from the listed effects; Blizzard’s cited pages do not establish a universally best perk or publish relevant pick-rate, win-rate, or combo-success statistics.
Why do older guides describe a different Roadhog?
The November 2023 rework introduced a different configuration. Blizzard’s November 14, 2023 developer comments described its aim this way: “The broad goal of the Roadhog rework was to improve his frontline presence on the battlefield as a tank hero and reduce the frustration enemy players have had with how consistently deadly his hook combo has been in the past.”
The later changes are important when applying that context. The August 2025 update removed Pig Pen, restored classic Scrap Gun fire, and moved Take a Breather. The April 2026 update increased Scrap Gun reload time from 1.5 to 1.75 seconds and Chain Hook cooldown from 6 to 8 seconds, removed Invigorate, and added Hogdrogen Exposure. For current ability and perk details, use the hero page; the patch notes explain how the kit reached this configuration.
