If you’re wondering what PSP game to play first, choose by the kind of play you enjoy: try Lumines: Puzzle Fusion for quick puzzle rounds, Daxter for platform action, or Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for stealth missions and base management. This starter guide compares seven distinctive PSP games rather than declaring one objective winner. The descriptions draw on GamesRadar+’s June 30, 2026 retrospective and Sony’s historical PSP catalog.
Which PSP game should you play first?
Start with the game whose central activity sounds most appealing. These picks cover puzzle play, rhythm-command strategy, platforming, cinematic action, stealth, role-playing, and demanding hunts.

| What you want | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Short, repeatable puzzle sessions | Lumines: Puzzle Fusion | Match blocks as the music and visuals evolve. |
| Rhythm mixed with strategy | Patapon 3 | Give army commands by beating drum patterns; it also has multiplayer elements. |
| Platforming and action | Daxter | A platform-focused spin-off with action, minigames, and collectibles. |
| Cinematic action and boss fights | God of War: Ghost of Sparta | Follow Kratos as he searches for Deimos in a mythic action adventure. |
| Stealth missions and base management | Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker | Mix stealth missions with Mother Base management; co-op and versus modes are also described. |
| A substantial, story-led RPG | Persona 3 Portable | Choose this for a portable role-playing adventure with dungeon crawling. |
| A difficult hunt that rewards preparation | Monster Hunter Freedom Unite | Expect challenging monsters and a style of play built around patience and planning. |
The picks are recommendations by play style, not a tested ranking. GamesRadar+ ranked Lumines first in its retrospective, but that is editorial judgment, not a universal measure of quality. Sony’s historical catalog independently lists Peace Walker, Daxter, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

What each game is like
Lumines: Puzzle Fusion: puzzle rounds with an audio-visual pulse
Choose Lumines if you want a puzzle game organized around matching blocks while the music and visuals change. Its repeatable round-based structure makes it a natural starting point for someone who wants to play in short sessions.
#1 Best Overall
- Go faster than ever on much longer streets, reaching scary speeds
- Get from checkpoint to checkpoint while you outmaneuver aggressive, alone or in multiplayer mode
- New Garage Mode for adding high-end customization to your racing machine
- Add style to your ride, with wheels customized with parts from Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Ducati and more
Patapon 3: issue commands in time with the beat
In Patapon 3, drum rhythms are commands for an army. The appeal is the combination of keeping time and making strategic choices, rather than conventional direct-control action. GamesRadar+ also notes multiplayer elements.
Daxter: platform action with extras
Daxter is the straightforward choice for a platformer: its mix includes action, minigames, and collectibles. It is a PSP spin-off, so it does not need to be treated as a general-purpose PSP showcase to make sense as a platform-action pick.
Rank #2
- Playable Jedi warriors
- 16 new locations and never-before-seen Star Wars environments and graphics
- Track your stats, join a clan, and find your comrades when playing online
- Upgraded AI
God of War: Ghost of Sparta: mythic action
Choose Ghost of Sparta if you want a cinematic action game centered on Kratos’s search for Deimos. Sony’s platform history describes the series in terms of mythic action, large bosses, and combo combat.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: missions alongside base building
Peace Walker combines stealth missions with Mother Base management, giving it a broader loop than a sequence of isolated action stages. Its described co-op and versus modes may suit players looking for multiplayer options as well as solo missions. Sony included the game in a PSP Greatest Hits collection.
Rank #3
- Tear it up in more than 30 unique environments.
- 6 distinct terrain types including snow, dirt, mud, ice, water and grass.
- Multiple player capable using PSP wireless multiplayer connectivity
- See from both first and third-person perspectives
- Several race modes such as race, freestyle, career or any of the various mini-games
Persona 3 Portable: commit to a longer RPG
Pick Persona 3 Portable when you want a story-led role-playing game with dungeon crawling, not a quick drop-in puzzle. It is the most natural choice here for someone looking for a substantial RPG commitment.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite: plan before the hunt
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is the high-challenge option. GamesRadar+ emphasizes patience, planning, and difficult monsters, so it is a better fit for players who enjoy preparing for a fight than those who want immediate, low-friction action. Sony’s PSP catalog also lists the title.
Rank #4
- Playstation portable game
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
How to choose between them
Use these differences to narrow the field rather than trying to identify a single “best” game:
- Session shape: Pick Lumines for repeatable puzzle rounds; choose Persona 3 Portable if you want a story-led RPG commitment.
- How you interact: Patapon 3 turns rhythm into commands, while Daxter centers on platform action.
- What you want to manage: Peace Walker pairs stealth missions with a base; Monster Hunter Freedom Unite rewards planning around challenging hunts.
- Multiplayer interest: The cited retrospective identifies multiplayer elements in Patapon 3 and co-op and versus modes in Peace Walker. It does not establish current services or the availability of other players.
- Difficulty: If you want a game described as demanding and preparation-heavy, start with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite; if that sounds like a chore, choose another style in the table.
Exact playtime comparisons are not established for these specific editions, so use genre and play style—not an assumed number of hours—to choose.

How to play PSP games today
Sony’s PSP User’s Guide, for system software version 6.60, says the PlayStation Store no longer sells PSP games, in-game content, or videos. Sony’s game documentation describes UMD games and Memory Stick media for saved data and starting games. For a PSP-specific experience, that means looking into a used console and legitimate used UMD copies; local stock, prices, and the condition of individual items vary.
Sony reported that more than 67 million PSP units had been sold worldwide in its February 25, 2011 announcement, including 23 million in North America. Those figures are historical sales figures published by Sony in 2011, not current totals.
Check the console and game before buying
- Model and media compatibility: Check the exact PSP model and confirm it supports the media you plan to use.
- Condition: Inspect the console and UMD for damage and ask whether the disc drive works.
- Completeness: Check whether the game includes its case and manual if those matter to you.
- Storage: Confirm what compatible Memory Stick storage is included or required for saved data.
- Seller details: Verify the specific item’s condition and local availability; there is no established market-wide price or condition standard here.
Consider modern versions, but verify the edition
GamesRadar+ reports that Lumines Remastered is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, and that Patapon 3 is available on PS4 and PS5. These are distinct versions or platforms, not the PSP editions; check your regional storefront for current listings before relying on availability.
