Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a ChatGPT answer has frightened or upset you, stop interacting with it for now and reach out to someone you trust. If you may be in immediate danger or cannot stay safe, contact emergency services or a crisis helpline now. You can report the answer separately, but reporting is product feedback—not immediate personal support.
First, focus on your safety and support
You do not need to keep reading or respond to the answer. Step away from the conversation if that helps, and consider contacting a trusted friend, family member, caregiver, or mental-health professional. A distressing reaction does not by itself mean anything is wrong with you; choose support based on what you need right now.

Choose the right kind of help
| What is happening | What to do |
|---|---|
| Immediate danger or urgent medical need | Contact local emergency services or seek emergency medical care. In the United States, call 911 for immediate danger. |
| Emotional or mental-health crisis | Contact a local crisis helpline. In the United States, call or text 988, or use the 988 Lifeline chat. |
| You need someone who knows you | Contact a trusted person directly; do not wait for a product notification. |
| You want to flag the ChatGPT answer | Report the message or use OpenAI’s content-reporting form. This is separate from getting personal support. |
If you are in the United States
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support by call, text, or chat. Call or text 988, or use its online chat. Its guidance directs people in immediate danger to call 911. Crisis lines address emotional or mental-health emergencies; they are not a substitute for long-term therapy.

If you are outside the United States
Contact your local emergency number for immediate danger, or find a crisis helpline serving your country. 988 is a U.S. service, not a global hotline. The right number and service depend on your location.
How to report a ChatGPT answer
If you want to flag the response after addressing any immediate need, OpenAI’s Help Center describes reporting directly from a message on web or mobile:
Rank #2
- Click or tap the thumbs-down button on the ChatGPT message.
- Choose “Select an issue.”
- Select “Safety or Legal concern.”
- Follow the prompts to submit the report.
OpenAI also provides a content-reporting form for content that may violate its terms or applicable laws. If it feels safe and useful, keep the relevant conversation details so you can describe what happened accurately. OpenAI’s reporting instructions do not promise a reply, removal, or a particular outcome.

What ChatGPT and safety features can—and cannot—do
ChatGPT may be a supportive conversational tool, but it can still give an answer that is upsetting, inaccurate, or unsuitable for your situation. OpenAI’s September 23, 2026 MentalHealthBench announcement says ChatGPT is not a substitute for therapy or professional care.
In an October 27, 2025 announcement, OpenAI said it worked with more than 170 mental-health experts on improvements to responses in sensitive conversations and estimated that responses falling short of its desired behavior decreased by 65% to 80% across a range of mental-health-related domains. That is OpenAI’s reported evaluation estimate, not an independently verified measure of an individual person’s risk or a guarantee that any particular answer is safe or clinically appropriate. The announcement does not establish the probability that a specific user will receive a harmful response. OpenAI’s announcement describes the scope of that work.

Trusted Contact is not emergency response
OpenAI’s optional Trusted Contact feature is for eligible adults using personal accounts. If a nominated contact accepts and automated monitoring plus trained human review identifies a serious safety concern involving suicide, that contact may receive a brief notification encouraging them to check in. OpenAI says chat details and transcripts are not shared.
OpenAI describes availability in most countries and territories for adults 18 or older. The feature is not enabled in shared Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspaces and is not currently available in ChatGPT Voice. It may not trigger, and OpenAI says it is not an emergency service, crisis response system, or substitute for mental-health care. Details are in the Trusted contacts in ChatGPT Help Center article.
