The documented activation sequence
Carmilla is not activated merely by reaching the Observatory. Her encounter is gated by two linked Library puzzles: the Planetarium’s Star Chart and the giant armillary mechanism in the Observation Tower. The order matters because the chart provides the constellation pattern that the mechanism must reproduce.

- Inspect the Star Chart in the Planetarium. Interact with it and make sure the inspection has completed before attempting the armillary puzzle.
- Go to the Observation Tower. Find the large armillary mechanism and rotate it so every planetary node matches the constellation shown on the Star Chart.
- Confirm the route has opened. A correct alignment opens additional grapple points, including the vertical passage leading onward.
- Use the new grapple route and enter the right-hand door. This is the entrance associated with the Carmilla cutscene.
When the sequence succeeds, a cutscene should play and a named Carmilla health bar should appear at the bottom of the screen. That bar is the clearest confirmation that the boss encounter has actually started.

The Planetarium chart is the reference for the Observation Tower puzzle, not optional scenery. The documented trigger requires the chart to be inspected before the armillary nodes are aligned. If you rotate the mechanism without first interacting with the chart, returning to the same arrangement is not enough evidence that the trigger has registered. Go back, inspect the chart, then perform the alignment again from that prerequisite state.

What to inspect in the Planetarium
Interact directly with the Star Chart and allow the inspection to finish. You do not need to guess a constellation or use a partial pattern. The chart supplies the visual arrangement that must be reproduced by the tower’s planetary nodes.
What counts as a correct armillary alignment
Every node must match the constellation pattern. Partial alignment is not the documented trigger. If even one planetary node is out of position, continue rotating the mechanism until the entire arrangement corresponds to the chart rather than stopping when some of the points appear correct.
How to tell whether the puzzle has registered
The most useful confirmation is environmental: correctly aligning the armillary mechanism opens new grapple points. Those points create a vertical route that was not available before the puzzle was solved. Use that route instead of returning through the earlier approach to the Planetarium.

Entering the correct room
After the vertical grapple passage opens, continue through it to the boss approach. The relevant entrance is the right-hand door. Entering that door is the final documented step; the cutscene should begin and the named health bar should be visible before you treat the fight as active.
The arena has a distinctive gothic appearance beneath a blood-red moon. That visual setting, together with the cutscene and the red Carmilla health bar, distinguishes the actual boss room from the Observatory route and puzzle spaces. If you are still seeing only the tower or grapple route with no named bar, you have not reached the confirmed encounter state.

If Carmilla’s health bar will not appear
Use the following checks in order. They mirror the documented trigger rather than assuming that a missing bar is a confirmed software bug.
1. Recheck the prerequisite state
Ask whether you actually interacted with the Star Chart, not merely walked past it. If the chart inspection was skipped, return to the Planetarium and complete it before realigning the armillary mechanism.

Compare the whole armillary arrangement with the constellation pattern. The available guidance does not describe a partial solution as sufficient, so one or more apparently correct nodes do not establish completion. Finish the full pattern, then look for the newly opened grapple points.
3. Recheck the route and doorway
Use the newly opened vertical grapple passage and enter the right-hand door. Returning to the puzzle area, taking an earlier route or entering another doorway does not test the documented Carmilla entrance. The cutscene and named bar are expected only after the correct route and door.
4. Separate a trigger failure from an active fight
If the red named bar is present, Carmilla’s encounter has triggered even if the fight looks unusual or difficult. The arena’s hazards are combat mechanics, not evidence that activation failed. Continue with the battle rather than repeating the Observatory puzzle.

5. Document an unresolved failure
If you inspected the chart, aligned every node, used the opened grapple route and entered the right-hand door but still receive no cutscene or health bar, document the failure before contacting support. Record the platform, game version or build, and the relevant save-state details. The available sources do not establish an official Carmilla-specific bug, patch or platform-specific workaround, so describing the exact reproducible sequence is more useful than applying an unverified fix.

Recognizing the active Carmilla encounter
Once the encounter is active, the fight includes several visual and mechanical elements that can be mistaken for a trigger problem when the player is expecting a simple duel.
Floating skull protection
Carmilla can summon floating skulls that provide protection. Destroy the summoned skulls to remove that protection and create an opening to damage her.
Blood pillars
Blood pillars occupy portions of the arena. Move through the gaps rather than trying to stand in their path. The spaces between pillars are part of the fight’s movement challenge.
Blood-curse mechanic
The encounter also uses a blood curse. Treat the curse as a fight mechanic that confirms you are inside the boss sequence, not as proof that the Observatory trigger failed.

Attack windows
Attack when Carmilla resurfaces. Prioritize surviving the skull and blood-pillar patterns, then use the openings created after her return. The red health bar remains the definitive activation indicator throughout the battle.
Where Carmilla fits in the story
Carmilla is listed as a required main-story boss for access to Notre-Dame. She appears alongside Talos and Brauner in that progression, after the earlier Catacombs encounters. This context matters when deciding whether to keep searching for a route: the encounter is a required progression gate, not an optional challenge that can be bypassed by leaving the Library.
The encounter guide reports 4,500 HP and 850 XP for Carmilla. Those figures describe the listed fight and should not be used to diagnose activation; before the health bar appears, neither value is relevant to the trigger state.

Platform and version details to include in a support report
A release listing dated October 15, 2026 identifies Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. Availability and behavior can vary by platform or build, so specify which system you are using instead of reporting only that the Carmilla door does not work.
- Platform and exact hardware model where relevant.
- Game version or build number shown by the title screen or system update information.
- Whether the Star Chart was inspected before the armillary alignment.
- Whether every node matched the constellation pattern.
- Whether the new grapple points and vertical passage opened.
- Whether you entered the right-hand door.

- The save-state position and whether the failure can be reproduced from that save.
No official source currently establishes a platform-specific Carmilla trigger workaround. Avoid presenting a reload method, patch number or console-specific procedure as confirmed unless support supplies one for your build.
