Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you believe a connected device has been compromised, isolate it from the network if you can do so safely, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model. Avoid a quick factory reset until you have checked for a security notice and considered whether the device controls a lock, alarm, medical function, or other service that needs a safe fallback.
First, contain the risk without creating a safety problem
A compromised smart device may be able to communicate with other devices or services on its network. NIST warns that unauthorized devices can send and receive data, scan for vulnerabilities, eavesdrop, attack other connected devices, or exfiltrate or modify data. That is why isolation is a sensible first response when compromise is credible; it does not mean other devices are necessarily affected. NIST SP 1800-36E describes these network risks.

- If it is safe and practical: disconnect the device from Wi-Fi or unplug its Ethernet cable. Avoid physically disconnecting equipment if doing so could endanger someone or interrupt a critical process.
- If direct disconnection is not suitable: use your router or network-management controls to block or isolate that device, if you know how to identify it reliably.
- If it provides a safety-critical function: first arrange an appropriate fallback and involve the responsible operator or support team. Do not leave a lock, alarm, medical device, or industrial control without a safe alternative.
If you have only a suspicion, such as an unusual alert or behavior, treat it as a reason to investigate—not proof that the device was hacked. Before resetting it, where feasible, save relevant alerts, account notices, and timestamps. These details may help the manufacturer or an incident responder understand what happened.

Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact device
Identify the make, model, and current software or firmware version if available. On the manufacturer’s official website or app, look for security advisories, vulnerability notices, breach instructions, updates, recovery steps, and information about whether the product still receives support. NIST’s manufacturer cybersecurity guidance describes communicating updates, security alerts, vulnerabilities, breach events, and remediation; it also identifies the security implications of ending support and patches. See NIST IR 8259 Rev. 1 and NIST’s manufacturer information-dissemination catalog.

Use instructions for the exact model and incident where possible. A generic reset guide may not account for cloud registration, account access, or a manufacturer’s specific recovery process. If the vendor has published a security notice, follow its advice about updates, recovery, or replacement rather than improvising.
Review network access and connected accounts
Check your router or network-management interface for unfamiliar devices and review whether the suspect device has unexpected access. Shared network credentials can make it easier for an unauthorized device to join a network, while a device on that network may create risks for other connected equipment. These are reasons to review access—not grounds to assume the entire network is compromised. NIST discusses these onboarding and lifecycle risks in SP 1800-36E.

- Continuously Powered by Solar: Just 3 hours of sunlight is enough to keep the camera running. The tiny size and wire-free design allow it to be installed anywhere.
- Day and Night Clarity: Enjoy clear black-and-white night vision thanks to infrared LEDs and an f/1.6 aperture. Please note that spotlight color night vision is not supported.
- Easy Installation: Use anywhere thanks to its tiny size and wire-free design. Drill one hole, once.
- Human Detection: Al alerts you to anyone in your yard, whether family, a courier, or a stranger. Connect to HomeBase 3 for individual facial recognition.
- No Monthly Fee: One-time purchase. No monthly fees or hidden costs. On-device storage and AI for complete security and transparency.
- Use a trusted, clean phone or computer to review the device’s associated account and recent sign-ins, if the service offers that information.
- If credentials may have been exposed, change them through the manufacturer’s official app or website, not through a link in an unexpected message. Consider changing network credentials when appropriate, and reconnect only devices you recognize.
- Check account recovery details and revoke unfamiliar sessions or access where the service provides those controls.
The right account response depends on what was accessed and on the manufacturer’s instructions. Changing every password or resetting every connected device is not automatically necessary.
Recover, reset, and reconnect carefully
Follow the manufacturer’s incident, update, and recovery steps before applying generic reset advice. A factory reset can return a device to its initial configuration, but it is not proof that compromise has been removed. In its IR 8349, NIST says a factory reset is generally the recommended procedure for decommissioning or removing a device when no instructions exist. That guidance is about decommissioning and removal, not a universal malware-eradication guarantee.

- High-definition pan and tilt camera: Capture every detail in pristine 1080p HD quality, from any angle, with the Energizer Connect security camera's 355-degree horizontal and 48-degree vertical pan and tilt capabilities.
- Night Vision Equipped: Camera has 4 led lights and 4 IR lights that switch automatically depending on the lighting conditions, allowing you to see color at night or black and white in total darkness.
- Two-Way Audio: Allowing you to listen and talk to the person in the video, using the built-in microphone and speaker, or siren alarm to deter intruders.
- Flexible Storage Options: Choose cloud storage with a complimentary 30-day trial or utilize a micro SD card (up to 128GB, not included) for local recording.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Compatible: Connects to your 2.4ghz wifi network, which is the most common wifi frequency. It does not support 5ghz wifi networks.
Reset behavior varies: firmware updates may not be rolled back, and a reset can sometimes deregister cloud service or disconnect network access. NIST also describes re-onboarding as a possible lifecycle need after a breach, repair, or update. For its context and limitations, see IR 8349 and SP 1800-36E.
- Apply the manufacturer’s approved recovery or reset steps for the exact model.
- Install available firmware or software updates from the official source.
- Reconnect and register the device using trusted network and account credentials, following the maker’s setup guidance.
- Restore only settings and integrations you recognize, then watch for repeated alerts or suspicious behavior.
Know when to hand the response to an expert
For a business, industrial environment, or safety-critical device, involve the organization’s security, IT, or operational-technology team and follow its incident-response process. A reset can remove needed configuration or interrupt service, so the people responsible for safe operation should be part of the decision. NIST’s guidance addresses manufacturer support and lifecycle management, but it does not establish one universal consumer reporting contact for every device or jurisdiction.
