To set up an Echo speaker, use the Alexa app: open Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo and follow the prompts. An Echo Show can usually be configured on its screen by connecting to Wi-Fi and signing in to your Amazon account. Before either setup, have your Wi-Fi name and password, Amazon sign-in details, and the device’s included power adapter ready.
What to have ready
- Your Amazon Echo or Echo Show and the power adapter supplied with it.
- An Amazon account and its sign-in details. If the account does not have a password, Amazon says you must set one to register the device.
- Your home Wi-Fi network name and password, plus an internet connection that is working.
- A phone or tablet with the Alexa app installed and updated for app-based speaker setup.
Keep the mobile device near the Echo while setting up. Use the supplied adapter rather than assuming another power supply is suitable.

Set up an Echo speaker in the Alexa app
- Install or update the Alexa app on your mobile device.
- Plug in the Echo and wait for it to be ready for setup.
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select the add or plus control, then choose Add Device.
- Choose Amazon Echo, then select the Echo family option that matches your device.
- Follow the app’s prompts to connect the speaker and complete registration.
Amazon documents this app flow for Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, and Echo Dot Kids. Labels and available choices can change, so follow the current prompts for your model. If setup does not start automatically, return to Devices > Add Device and select the Echo family manually.
Set up an Echo Show on its screen
- Plug in the Echo Show using the included power adapter.
- Choose a language on the display.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Sign in with your Amazon account.
- Continue through the remaining on-screen steps to customize the device.
For the Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon also offers a QR code on the device screen for guided setup in the Alexa app. That option is documented for this model; other Echo Show models may show different setup choices. You can use the on-device flow where available.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Connect to Wi-Fi or recover from setup problems
Amazon says Echo devices support common home Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and 802.11a/b/g/n networks. They cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks. For a screen device, Wi-Fi changes are made on the device itself rather than through the speaker’s app flow.
- Network missing: Check that the network is available and that the Echo is within range of the router.
- Connection rejected: Re-enter the Wi-Fi name and password carefully, then confirm that your home internet is working.
- App setup does not begin: In the Alexa app, select Devices > Add Device, then choose the Echo family manually.
- Amazon sign-in fails: Check the account credentials. If you have forgotten the password, use Amazon’s password recovery; an account without a password needs one set before registration.
- Echo Show needs a different network: Use its on-screen Wi-Fi settings. Amazon provides a separate screen-device Wi-Fi procedure for changing the connection.
If these checks do not resolve a connection problem, use Amazon’s model-specific Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Know where the privacy controls are
Controls differ across Echo models, so check the instructions and controls for your specific device rather than assuming every Echo has a camera or the same privacy options. On the Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Amazon says the camera is enabled by default and the device has a physical combined Microphones & Camera Enable/Disable button. Amazon also says a blue light appears on the screen while Alexa records and processes a request in its secure cloud. Voice recording history can be reviewed or deleted.
