If an iOS update is stuck or won’t install, first identify what the screen says: a slow download, a storage warning, a verification or server alert, and an installation that has stopped need different fixes. Check that your iPhone supports the release, then try the least disruptive steps—free space, use Wi‑Fi, keep the phone powered, and retry—before updating with a computer. Use recovery mode only for more serious symptoms; choosing Restore erases the device.
Start with the message and your iPhone model
Note the exact alert or screen before changing anything. Apple lists several distinct causes of wireless update problems: an unsupported iPhone, insufficient storage, a slow download, an unreachable update server, or an update that does not complete. The right next step depends on which one you see.

Two alerts you may recognize are “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update.” and “Unable to Download. This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.” Other wording can vary. An alert about Wi‑Fi or a server is not the same as a low-storage warning or a frozen installation screen.

If the update won’t download or storage is low

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

If available, turn on Offload Unused Apps, or delete apps you no longer need. Offloading can temporarily remove an app while retaining data that can be downloaded again; deleting an app removes it, so choose apps accordingly.

Return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.

If the download is slow
Connect to Wi‑Fi and pause other large downloads. Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and the internet connection speed, so there is no reliable universal wait time. You can use the iPhone while the update downloads; it will notify you when the update is ready to install.
If you see a server or verification error

Retry on your current network. If the same alert appears, try a different Wi‑Fi network.

If the problem continues, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the downloaded update, tap it, then choose Delete Update. Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download it again.

If the update is not listed or the new download also fails, try updating from a Mac or PC. Apple’s computer-server troubleshooting guidance recommends a regular network rather than a personal hotspot for downloading software updates.

If installation looks stuck
Keep the iPhone connected to power and give the progress time to continue. Apple Support’s instruction is: “When you’re updating wirelessly, keep your device connected to a power source.” A progress bar that moves slowly does not by itself prove that the update has failed. Its pace can depend on the update size and the files on the device, and Apple does not give a universal number of minutes that establishes failure.

If the battery ran out, connect the iPhone to power and turn it on so the update or restore can finish. If the phone is frozen or will not start, use Apple’s guidance for a frozen device or recovery mode rather than repeatedly interrupting installation.

Update with a Mac or PC
If updating wirelessly still fails, connect the iPhone to a computer and use Finder on a Mac, or the current Apple Devices app or iTunes on a PC, as applicable. Apple’s update guide and computer error guidance provide instructions for these routes.
- Update the computer’s software, then connect the iPhone directly to a USB port—not through a hub or keyboard.
- Check the cable and port. For certain computer update or restore errors, Apple recommends the supplied cable or another Apple-certified USB cable.
- Match the cable connector to both the iPhone and the computer. Cable choice matters for this wired connection, not for unrelated Wi‑Fi or compatibility problems.
Use recovery mode only for the right symptoms
Recovery mode is a later escalation, not a routine fix for a slow download. Apple identifies symptoms such as a computer not recognizing the iPhone, a recovery screen, or an Apple logo displayed for several minutes without a progress bar as situations where recovery mode may be needed. Follow Apple’s instructions for your particular iPhone model, because the button sequence varies.
If the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first when available and not already attempted. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. Do not select it unless you understand that consequence and have considered whether your data is backed up. If recovery fails or a button is broken, Apple says service may be necessary.
