Start in Settings > Battery and find what is draining power before turning off features you rely on. Lowering excessive brightness, using Wi-Fi when practical, and addressing weak signal can help preserve calls, messages, and ordinary connectivity. For stronger savings, Low Power Mode makes more noticeable changes to background activity and display behavior.
Find what is using battery before changing settings
Open Settings > Battery and review the daily usage view and any battery Insights. Look for an app with unusually high use, activity in the background, or a pattern that lines up with poor signal or a bright display. This helps target the cause instead of disabling services across the phone.

Battery life can also dip temporarily after setting up an iPhone or installing a software update, while background work finishes. Apple says performance and battery life may return to normal afterward. If the drain began around one of those events, check again once the work has completed rather than immediately treating it as a lasting problem. Apple’s battery-drain guidance covers these checks.
Make small adjustments that keep everyday features available
Reduce screen power without making the display unusable
Lower brightness to a comfortable level rather than keeping it unnecessarily high. You can also enable Auto-Brightness and set a shorter Auto-Lock interval so the display adapts to the environment and turns off when you are not using it. These changes do not require you to give up calls, messages, or notifications.

Prefer Wi-Fi when it is practical
For internet use, Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than a mobile network. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network when one is available, especially if cellular coverage is weak. A phone searching for a usable signal can consume more power, so moving to an area with stronger reception may help more than toggling apps or services at random.
Use Airplane Mode only when you can be offline
If you know you will be somewhere with no coverage for a while and do not need ordinary wireless connectivity, Airplane Mode can prevent the phone from continuing to seek a network. It also removes that connectivity during the time it is on, so it is not a suitable general battery-saving setting when you need calls, messages, or mobile data.

Choose a power mode based on how much change you can accept
Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode are different levels of intervention. Availability and behavior can vary by iPhone model and software version; check Settings > Battery > Power Mode where that option is available.
| Mode | How it works | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Power | Automatically makes smaller adjustments on supported iPhone models. | May make small brightness changes, limit background activity, and adjust performance. Apple says it may turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%; some high-performance use cases are excluded from its adjustments. |
| Low Power Mode | A more explicit setting you can switch on when you need stronger savings. | Reduces several background and display functions, and some tasks may take longer. It turns off after the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. |
Adaptive Power: lighter, automatic adjustments
Apple lists iPhone Air and certain other recent iPhone models as supporting Adaptive Power. Its availability and default state depend on the model, so verify it on your device rather than assuming it is present or enabled. When available, the mode is intended to make modest adjustments automatically; it is not a guarantee of a particular number of extra hours.

Low Power Mode: temporary savings with visible tradeoffs
Apple documents that Low Power Mode reduces brightness, sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, disables Background App Refresh, pauses iCloud Photos, disables automatic downloads and Mail fetch, and reduces visual effects. On iPhones with ProMotion, the refresh rate is limited to 60 frames per second. Some tasks may take longer. These changes can be worthwhile when you need to stretch the remaining charge, but they can delay background updates and syncing.
On iPhone 15 and later, Apple’s path is Settings > Battery > Power Mode. On older models, look for Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Exact labels can vary with the iPhone and iOS version. Apple’s Low Power Mode support page and iPhone power modes guide describe the effects.

Check battery health if runtime remains unexpectedly short
Today’s battery runtime and long-term battery health are related, but they are not the same problem. In Settings, open Battery > Battery Health or the equivalent screen for your iPhone and review its status. If it shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement. A health check is more relevant to persistent short runtime than repeatedly enabling charging features.
Optimized Battery Charging is designed to support battery lifespan, not to diagnose sudden drain. When it has learned your routine, it can pause charging at 80% and finish closer to the time you usually unplug. It may not activate if your charging schedule or locations vary. See Apple’s Optimized Battery Charging guide.

If you have an iPhone Air, weigh an accessory against the thin-phone feel
Apple identifies an iPhone Air MagSafe Battery for iPhone Air. It is a model-specific option, not an accessory to assume will work with every iPhone. It adds attached bulk while in use, so it may provide extra runtime away from power but does not preserve the phone’s thin feel. The compatibility detail appears in this mirrored Apple guide result.
Set realistic expectations
There is no reliable fixed number of hours these settings will add for an individual phone: results depend on use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors. Apple’s published iPhone battery test description concerns its own testing conditions, not a prediction for your day-to-day use. Apple’s battery test information says its July 2025 testing used preproduction iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max units and software subscribed to LTE and 5G carrier networks; Apple also notes that actual results vary with usage.
