Do not open, request, save, forward or discuss the alleged paper. Report what you already know promptly to your teacher or exams officer, then follow the instructions of your school and awarding organisation. Do not assume the file is genuine or that the exam will be cancelled: the relevant awarding organisation must investigate and decide how to protect the assessment.
The process below reflects guidance and practice in England and from UK awarding bodies. Rules and reporting routes differ by country, qualification and exam board.

What to do immediately
- Stop engaging with the material. Do not click through to find a paper, ask somebody to send it, pay for a copy, download it, or repost a screenshot. Do not debate questions or answers in a group chat, forum or social-media thread.
- Tell an official at your centre quickly. Contact your subject teacher, head of department or exams officer. If the exam is very soon, contact the exams officer or head of centre immediately rather than waiting for a routine school meeting.
- Report only what you already know. State the subject, qualification, awarding organisation if known, exam date or series, where you saw the claim, and who shared it if that information is already available to you. Do not search for more copies or attempt to build a case yourself.
- Follow the instructions you receive. Your school or awarding organisation can decide whether the claim is credible, what evidence is needed and how any file or image should be handled.
Ofqual’s 2026 student guidance says alleged leaked papers are probably fake and that attempting to look at one, even if it is fake, can be treated as malpractice. Avoiding the material protects you from creating a separate conduct problem while the allegation is checked.

If you have only seen a message or claim
A post saying “the paper is out” is not proof that an assessment has been compromised. Treat it as an allegation and report the existence of the claim without investigating its contents.

- Record the basic context you already saw: platform or group, approximate time, subject, exam date and the account or person who posted it.
- Do not forward the post to classmates “as a warning.” Tell the official directly instead.
- Do not ask friends whether they have the paper or invite them to compare screenshots.
- Do not attempt to authenticate the questions by matching them with a specification, textbook or revision site.
OCR advises students to speak to a teacher or exams officer about suspected leaks and warns that circulating exam rumours, or failing to report them, can create serious problems. Your centre can make the formal report required by its exam board.
If someone has already sent you a file or image
Receiving a file does not require you to prove whether it is authentic. Stop forwarding or discussing it and do not seek another copy.
- Tell the exams officer or teacher that a file or image was sent to you, including when and by which account if that is already known.
- Provide only the information and material you already possess, using the handling instructions from the school or awarding organisation.
- Do not upload it to a public site, send it to a journalist, or circulate it as “evidence.” Wider distribution can increase the harm and may itself breach exam rules.
- Ask the official channel whether you should retain, delete or otherwise secure the file. Do not make an independent decision that conflicts with its instructions.
If confidentiality matters, ask how your report will be handled. Cambridge International says information is treated sensitively and requests for anonymity are respected unless disclosure is legally required; it also notes that circumstances can identify a reporter even when anonymity is requested. No reporting route can promise absolute anonymity in every case.

Where to report, by situation

Check the current instructions for your exact board and country. A regulator is not a substitute for the centre’s immediate safeguarding and reporting duties, and a board’s procedure may differ from another board’s.

Why you should not collect more information
Ofqual’s England reporting guidance asks for relevant details and supporting evidence but specifically discourages gathering further information. Searching can expose you to additional restricted content, increase the number of people who see it and make it harder to distinguish an original post from altered copies.
Useful information is information that came to you without further investigation: the original message you saw, its visible sender, the time, the exam identity and any direct communication that accompanied it. An official investigator can request platform records, contact the account holder and assess whether the material matches a secure paper.
Will the exam be cancelled?
Not automatically. A suspected leak does not by itself establish that the paper is genuine, that it reached candidates, or that the assessment was materially affected. The awarding organisation investigates and chooses a proportionate response.
Ofqual’s 2025 delivery report says that when there is potential for a question paper to have leaked before an exam, awarding organisations are expected to identify and investigate breaches quickly and take steps to prevent further sharing. They may also:

- determine whether the material is genuine, altered or fabricated;
- establish how it became accessible and who may have seen it;
- protect later assessments with additional security controls;
- analyse marking for signs that candidates or centres were affected;
- consider sanctions for students or centre staff who committed malpractice.
Possible outcomes can include no change when an allegation is unfounded, additional monitoring, a different security arrangement for a remaining paper, or action under the board’s malpractice rules. The evidence does not establish one automatic remedy such as cancellation, a replacement paper or a universal grade adjustment. Do not promise classmates any particular result.
What happens after you report
Initial assessment
The centre or board records the allegation, identifies the qualification and checks whether the reported material could relate to the scheduled assessment. Staff may ask you for clarification about what you saw. Answer honestly and limit your account to events you personally know.
Investigation and containment
The awarding organisation may examine access logs, distribution routes, the integrity of the file and whether anyone had an opportunity to benefit. It can instruct centres to stop circulation, secure printed materials or change procedures for later exams.

Investigators consider whether the assessment was compromised and whether particular candidates or centres were disadvantaged. Boards can apply their malpractice rules to people who deliberately obtained, shared or used restricted material. A student who reports a claim without seeking or distributing it is in a different position from someone who deliberately accesses and circulates a paper, but only the applicable rules and facts determine the outcome.

Communication
Updates may come through your school, college or awarding organisation. Investigations can require confidential handling, so you may not receive every detail. If you are asked to provide a statement, distinguish clearly between what you saw, what someone told you and what you inferred.

Ofqual reported the following figures for the summer 2025 GCSE, AS and A-level series in England. “Security breaches” includes potential as well as actual breaches, so the totals do not mean that every incident compromised an assessment.

Report immediately to the exams officer or head of centre and avoid confronting the person you suspect. Preserve your own safety and do not attempt to access staff systems, locked storage or email accounts. Senior centre staff and the awarding organisation have procedures for securing materials and managing conflicts of interest.
If the normal route is unavailable or would put you at risk, use the awarding organisation’s direct reporting channel. In England, Ofqual accepts concerns about awarding organisations it regulates and may redirect information about a centre to the relevant organisation.
Common mistakes that can worsen the situation
- “I will look once, just to check.” Viewing restricted content can still create a malpractice issue, even when the file turns out to be fake.
- “I should warn everyone by reposting it.” Reposting expands access and can make you part of the distribution chain.
- “I need to investigate before reporting.” Searching for corroboration risks further exposure; officials can investigate more safely.
- “The exam is definitely cancelled.” Only the awarding organisation can decide the response after assessing evidence.
- “My report must be anonymous.” Confidentiality policies have limits, including legal disclosure and circumstances that identify a reporter.
- “Deleting everything immediately is safest.” Deletion may conflict with official instructions. Ask the reporting channel how to handle material already in your possession.
A short reporting checklist
- Subject and qualification
- Exam board or awarding organisation, if known
- Scheduled exam date and paper, if known
- Where you encountered the claim
- Approximate time you saw it
- Account, group or person involved, only if already known
- Whether a file or image was sent directly to you
- Any instructions you have received from your school or board
Send the checklist through the official route and then stop engaging with the material. Keep communication factual and do not add guesses about who is responsible or what the board will do.
Bottom line
Do not seek, view or spread an alleged leaked exam paper. Report the claim or file promptly to your teacher, exams officer or awarding organisation, provide only information already known to you, and follow the official handling instructions. A leak allegation triggers an investigation—not an automatic cancellation—and the final response depends on the exam board, jurisdiction and evidence.
