Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf an automated license plate reader (ALPR) appears to have linked your plate to the wrong vehicle or event, contact the organization that issued the notice or made the enforcement contact, follow the response instructions and deadline on the notice, and keep evidence that supports your account. If you suspect another vehicle is using a copy of your plate, report that suspicion to police as well as notifying the issuer. The correct process depends on where you live and whether the disputed item is a ticket, police record, toll or parking citation, or driver-record entry.
First, work out what is being disputed
A reader alert is not necessarily proof that your vehicle was at a particular place. The discrepancy could involve a plate being read or recorded incorrectly, an apparent mismatch between the vehicle and the record, or another vehicle using a duplicate of your registration. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis you can make from the notice alone.

Identify where the disputed item lives before choosing a correction route. A camera notice, private or public parking citation, toll charge, police ANPR record, and motor-vehicle driver record may be controlled by different organizations. Start with the named issuer or agency in contact with you; if the item is already in a court or driver record, the responsible court or record-keeping office may also need to be involved.
Respond to the notice and preserve evidence
- Read the notice and note its instructions. Record the issuer, reference number, event date and location, response method, and deadline. Use the notice’s own process and do not let an investigation cause you to miss a stated deadline.
- Compare its details with your vehicle. Check the registration and, if shown, the make, model, color, image, or other description. Note precisely what does not match: for example, the vehicle shown is not yours, your vehicle was elsewhere, or the registration appears to have been read incorrectly.
- Keep the original notice and relevant records. Save copies of correspondence and any image or evidence provided by the issuer. Records such as travel, work, parking, toll, or vehicle-service information may help establish where your vehicle was; these are practical examples, not evidence requirements that apply in every jurisdiction.
- Contact the issuer promptly. Explain the discrepancy clearly, ask how to submit a challenge, and ask what evidence it will accept. Keep a copy of what you send and proof of submission, then follow up through the issuer’s stated channel.
For example, Police.uk tells recipients of a mistaken UK speed-camera notice to contact the speed-camera team and provide details including the incident date, notice reference, registration, and location: Police.uk guidance on mistaken speed-camera notices. In California, the DMV says an erroneous parking or toll citation claim must go to the issuing parking agency; the DMV cannot remove it without that agency’s release or payment: California DMV guidance on parking and toll citations. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not universal procedures.

If another vehicle may be using your plate
If the notice or image appears to show your registration on a vehicle that is not yours, consider suspected plate cloning. Police.uk advises reporting suspected cloning to police, contacting the organization that issued the fine to request cancellation, and providing supporting evidence where available. Keep the police incident or crime reference number if one is issued and share it with the issuer: Police.uk guidance on vehicle cloning.
Do not assume that replacing your plates will correct a disputed notice or record. California DMV replacement guidance covers plates that are lost, stolen, damaged, or illegible; suspected theft or cloning may warrant contacting police and the relevant registration authority, but replacement is not a general remedy for a reader error: California DMV license plate guidance.

If the error is in a driver or government record
A citation and a driver-record entry are not necessarily corrected by the same office. California DMV distinguishes parking citations—which must be resolved with the issuing agency—from traffic violations or convictions appearing in a driver record. For the latter, it directs people to the court responsible for the matter or its Driver License Record Correction Request process: California DMV driver-record correction guidance.

What an ALPR record can establish—and what it cannot
For UK law-enforcement access to the National ANPR Capability, the Home Office’s National ANPR standards for policing and law enforcement, version 3.5, updated 29 July 2026, says: “ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) data must accurately represent VRMs of all vehicles with correctly represented EU and Schengen Community number plates.” The standards also define a read record as including the vehicle registration mark, time, location, and camera identifier: Home Office National ANPR standards. This is a standard for the specified UK law-enforcement system, not a guarantee that every reader, database, or commercial operator worldwide is error-free.
Retention periods also depend on the system and purpose. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency says ANPR data it uses for untaxed vehicles is stored for up to 18 months: DVLA privacy notice. That period is specific to the DVLA’s stated use and should not be taken as a general retention rule for police or commercial systems.

When to get further help
If a disputed notice could lead to a court appearance, vehicle seizure, registration restriction, or another serious consequence, consider qualified legal advice in your jurisdiction. Appeal deadlines, forms, image access, and correction processes vary by authority and notice type; rely on the current instructions from the issuer and any court or record-keeping agency handling the matter.
For UK police ANPR information, the Home Office publishes a data-subject notice describing enquiries and possible rectification: National ANPR Service data-subject information. Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner published guidance on police use of automated licence plate recognition on 16 December 2024, but the page warns it is under review following 2026 amendments to Ontario public-sector privacy laws. Check its current status before relying on it for present legal requirements: Ontario IPC guidance on police ALPR use.
