What to Do If an AI Gives You the Wrong Medication or Dose

Don’t follow a conflicting AI medication recommendation. Verify it with a clinician or pharmacist; if you may have taken a wrong dose, contact Poison Control promptly.

If an AI medication recommendation conflicts with your prescription, pharmacy label, or clinician’s instructions, don’t follow the AI’s version until a prescriber or pharmacist checks it. If you may already have taken the wrong medicine or dose, contact Poison Control promptly; in the United States, call 1-800-222-1222 or use webPOISONCONTROL. For a life-threatening emergency, call emergency services.

If you have not taken the questionable dose

  1. Pause before taking a new or changed dose recommended by AI. Do not start, stop, double, halve, or otherwise change a prescribed medicine based only on a chatbot or other AI tool.
  2. Check the current instructions. Compare the AI’s recommendation with the prescription label, the current prescription, and the directions your clinician gave you. An AI response does not confirm what was prescribed.
  3. Ask the prescriber or pharmacist to resolve the conflict. Give the medicine name and strength, proposed dose, route, schedule, and the exact wording that conflicts with your instructions. The FDA advises patients to discuss medication questions and decisions with a doctor, pharmacist, or another health professional: Think It Through: Managing the Benefits and Risks of Medicines.
  4. If a dose is due and you cannot reach the prescriber, get qualified advice rather than guessing. Contact a pharmacist, an on-call clinician, or a local urgent medical service. Do not use the AI to settle the disagreement or make a general decision to skip or change a dose.

If you already took a possibly wrong medicine or dose

Contact poison-control services promptly, even if you feel well. The risk depends on the medicine, amount, timing, route, formulation, and person; some long-acting medicines can pose risks over time. Do not ask the AI to judge whether the exposure is safe or wait for symptoms before seeking advice.

  • In the United States: Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or use webPOISONCONTROL. Poison Control says its contact options are free, confidential, and available around the clock. The online tool asks for details about the person, exposure route, substance, amount, time, and symptoms, then recommends next steps.
  • For a life-threatening emergency: Call emergency services now. Do not delay emergency care to troubleshoot the AI response. For example, an FDA opioid medication guide directs people to get emergency help or call 911 for an overdose.
  • Outside the United States: Follow your local poison-center and emergency procedures; for a poison emergency, contact the local service or go to an emergency department. Poison Control lists options for people outside the US on its contact page.

Do not induce vomiting or try a one-size-fits-all home treatment. The appropriate response depends on the substance and exposure; follow the poison center’s or emergency professionals’ instructions.

What information to have ready

Keep the medicine container, prescription label, or a clear photo nearby. Poison Control identifies the medicine, amount, time, age, and weight as useful exposure details. A professional may also ask for:

  • The person’s age and weight, symptoms, other medicines, and relevant health conditions.
  • The AI’s recommendation and the authoritative instruction it conflicts with, such as the label or clinician’s directions.

How to report the AI recommendation and reduce future errors

Once immediate safety is addressed, save a screenshot of the AI response and show it to the prescriber or pharmacist, particularly if it supplied a specific dose or contradicted the label. No general AI-specific medication-error reporting route is established here, so do not assume a particular reporting channel exists; the clinician or pharmacist can help determine what follow-up is appropriate.

For future dose tracking, a medication log or pill organizer may help prevent double doses, but neither can determine whether a medicine or dose is medically appropriate. For liquid medicine, use an oral syringe or dosing cup to measure a dose only after the correct dose has been confirmed; ask a pharmacist which measuring device to use if one was not supplied. Poison Control discusses these measures in its guidance on medication errors and double dosing.

Medication mistakes are not limited to AI: US poison centers received more than 361,000 medication-error calls in 2024, according to Poison Control. That figure is a US call count, not a worldwide estimate or an AI-specific statistic. A separate FDA alert describes dosing errors involving compounded injectable semaglutide and confusing instructions; it is an example involving that product, not evidence of an AI-related error rate: FDA alert on compounded injectable semaglutide dosing errors.
