How to Roll Back an NVIDIA Driver After a Game Update Causes Problems

If a game has problems after an update, check your NVIDIA driver version and try Device Manager rollback, NVIDIA App reinstall, or a manual download of the correct older driver.

If a game starts crashing, stuttering, or showing visual glitches after an update, an NVIDIA driver rollback is a reasonable troubleshooting step—but it is not guaranteed to fix the problem. First note your installed driver version. Then try Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option if it is available; otherwise, reinstall a previously installed driver in NVIDIA App or download the correct older driver from NVIDIA.

Before you roll back, note the current driver version

Recording the version helps you identify which release you are leaving and confirm which one is installed afterward. NVIDIA says you can check it in either of these places:

  • NVIDIA Control Panel: open Help > System Information.
  • Device Manager: open the NVIDIA graphics device’s Properties, then select the Driver tab.

NVIDIA documents these checks in its Driver Help.

Try Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option

Windows may retain the previous driver package when a newer driver is installed over it. NVIDIA says rollback may work in that situation, but not if the older driver was uninstalled first. NVIDIA’s detailed instructions cover Windows XP, Vista, and 7; they do not verify the current Windows 10 or 11 navigation labels.

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  2. Open the NVIDIA graphics device’s Properties, then select the Driver tab.
  3. Select Roll Back Driver, if the option is available, and follow the prompts.

If the button is missing or unavailable, use one of the reinstall options below. NVIDIA’s documented conditions and legacy procedure are on its Driver Rollback/Removal Instructions page.

Choose a reinstall route if rollback is unavailable

The right route depends on whether the driver you want is available in NVIDIA App or must be downloaded manually.

Route When to use it What to know
NVIDIA App The driver you want was previously installed through the App and appears in its driver list. NVIDIA documents restoring a listed driver using its three-dot menu and Reinstall. It does not promise that every past release is stored for every PC.
Manual download The desired driver is not available to reinstall in the App, or you need to locate an older release. Select your exact GPU and operating system on NVIDIA’s download pages; available drivers depend on the product and OS.

Reinstall a listed driver in NVIDIA App

  1. Open NVIDIA App and go to its driver list.
  2. Find the previously installed driver you want, open the three-dot menu beneath its details, and select Reinstall.
  3. Follow the installer prompts. Restart if the installer requests it.

NVIDIA describes this option in its NVIDIA App article.

Download an older driver from NVIDIA

  1. Open NVIDIA’s Download Drivers page.
  2. Choose the product and operating system that match your PC. Do not select a driver just because its version matches one used on another computer.
  3. Use the page’s advanced search for previously released certified or beta drivers, or follow its Beta and Older Drivers route to find an earlier release available for your GPU and OS.
  4. Download and install the selected driver, following the on-screen instructions. Restart if prompted.

NVIDIA’s Driver Help also points users seeking older or beta releases to its archived listings.

Test the game and decide what to do next

After installation, launch the game and check whether the original problem remains. A driver rollback is reversible, but a game update and a graphics-driver problem are not automatically linked; the available NVIDIA instructions do not establish that every post-update issue is caused by the driver or that rolling it back will resolve every issue. If you need to change versions again, use the version you recorded to keep track of what is installed.
