If an AI-generated image appears to carry your signature, save the image and its surrounding context, then report it to the platform as false attribution, impersonation, or manipulated media—whichever best describes what happened. A false signature alone does not prove copyright infringement, so use a copyright complaint only if you can identify a protected work and have authority to complain.
Preserve the post and evidence first
Capture the image and the context that connects it to you before the post is edited or removed. Keep copies of:

- The image and the post or page where it appears.
- The post URL, account name, and date you saw it.
- Any text claiming the image is yours, was made by you, or bears your authentic signature.
- Reports you submit and any replies from the platform.
This record helps you identify the material in a report and explain what is false. For a copyright notice, U.S. law also requires enough information to identify the allegedly infringed work and the material at issue; see the U.S. Copyright Office DMCA guidance.

Use the platform’s reporting process and describe the conduct accurately. Choose impersonation if someone is presenting themselves as you, or manipulated-media or misinformation reporting if the image or its accompanying claim is misleading. A report should explain that the signature is false and point to the account, post, and attribution claim. Avoid labeling it copyright infringement unless there is a genuine copyright basis.

TikTok
TikTok’s help page describes reporting AI impersonation through the post-report flow: select “Misinformation,” then “Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media,” and submit. The stated path is specific to TikTok and its interface wording may change. See TikTok’s AI-generated content guidance.
Other platforms
Look for the host’s current options for impersonation, misleading or manipulated media, and identity misuse. If there is no exact category, choose the closest available option and explain the false signature in your report rather than filing an unrelated copyright claim.

Check whether the AI provider has a separate complaint process
Reporting the post to the service hosting it is different from asking an AI provider to review content generated with its tools. Google, for example, offers a complaint process for certain images or videos generated or altered by another user with Gemini tools. Its process requires a personal Google Account, a complainant who is at least 18, and availability in a region where selfie verification is offered. For content made with third-party AI tools, Google directs people to the relevant tool provider’s rules. Check Google’s Gemini reporting guidance for current eligibility and instructions.

A name or signature displayed on an AI image does not, by itself, establish that you own copyright in the image or that it copies a specific copyrighted work. A U.S. DMCA takedown notice is a copyright procedure, not a general remedy for false attribution. Use one only if you can identify the work you own that was infringed and you are the copyright owner or an authorized agent; the notice must identify both the protected work and the material to be located.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 report says AI output may be protected when a human author determined sufficient expressive elements—for example, where a human-authored work is perceptible in the output or a person made a sufficiently creative arrangement or modification. The report says prompting alone is not enough. Consequently, a generated image that names you does not automatically become your copyrighted work. See the Copyright Office’s AI report and resources.

There is no single universal complaint or legal remedy established for every falsely signed AI image. The available options depend on where you are, how the image is being used, and whether it involves something beyond false attribution. If it is being used commercially, causing substantial reputational or financial harm, or persists after a platform report, consider advice from a lawyer familiar with your jurisdiction and the relevant rights.

European Union transparency rules
The European Commission says transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act apply from 2 August 2026 and include certain deepfakes, subject to scope and exceptions. That does not establish that every falsely signed artwork is a covered deepfake, nor does it create a worldwide remedy for false attribution. Nonconsensual intimate images in the United States
If the image is also a nonconsensual intimate image, a separate U.S. process may apply. FTC guidance says platforms covered by the Take It Down Act must provide a way to report covered images and remove them and copies within 48 hours after a request. The FTC also provides a route to report a covered platform that fails to comply. This process is limited to covered intimate images; it is not a general takedown rule for ordinary AI art or a false signature. See the FTC’s Take It Down Act guidance and FTC reporting portal.
