Extreme confinement reshapes water’s hydrogen-bond network, but it does not produce one universal effect. A single layer between graphene sheets cannot form the bulk-like three-dimensional network; narrow carbon nanotubes, wider slits and other pores impose different constraints. The outcome depends on pore geometry and width, wall chemistry, and whether the evidence comes from spectroscopy or a molecular model.
What changes when water is confined?
In bulk liquid water, molecules form an extended, continually rearranging hydrogen-bond network. At nanometre and sub-nanometre scales, pore walls and limited space restrict how molecules can orient and connect. That can change the network’s structure and the way it rearranges, as well as water’s translational and orientational dynamics. Reviews of confined water describe these effects across carbon nanotubes and graphene or graphene-oxide slit pores, while emphasizing that results depend on the system studied. The 2017 review of confined water and a 2019 review of hydrogen-bond networks under nanoconfinement discuss these structural and dynamical changes.

“Extreme confinement” is not a single pore size that applies to every material. The number of water layers and the geometry matter: a cylindrical tube and a flat slit constrain water differently. So do wall composition and hydrophilicity. A difference between two reported systems cannot be attributed to confinement alone if their materials, dimensions or measurement methods also differ.
What happens in a single water layer between graphene sheets?
A 2024 study examined monolayer water in graphene slit pores. In the studied setup, the layer’s geometry frustrates formation of the extended, three-dimensional hydrogen-bond network associated with bulk water. In the reported simulation, molecules had two or three hydrogen-bonded neighbours, rather than the roughly four often associated with bulk water. Some OH groups remained unbonded and pointed toward the confining walls. The authors linked hydrogen-bond rearrangement with molecular motion. The study’s results apply to its modeled graphene monolayer, not automatically to nanotubes, other wall materials or wider pores.

This is a change in network connectivity and available orientations, not evidence that every hydrogen bond in every confined sample is simply weaker. The study describes a specific geometry and model; other pore widths and wall chemistries can allow different structures.
How do nanotubes and wider graphene slits compare?
| Confining geometry | What the cited work reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow, open-ended carbon nanotubes | A 2017 review describes collective motion in some narrow tubes, even with water arranged in a single file. For the reviewed single-file arrangement, dipolar-correlation relaxation is reported on the order of several nanoseconds, compared with 2.5 ps for bulk water. Source: Accounts of Chemical Research review, 2017. | This is a system-specific dynamical comparison, not a general timescale for all nanotubes or confined water. |
| Single-layer water in graphene slit pores | The 2024 study’s simulation reports two or three hydrogen-bonded neighbours per molecule and dangling OH groups in its monolayer setup. Source: Nano Letters study, 2024. | This result concerns network structure in a defined monolayer model; it should not be transferred to cylindrical pores or multilayer water. |
| Water lamellae in graphene-based slit pores | A 2022 THz spectroscopy study reports distinct spectral contributions associated with intralayer and interlayer hydrogen bonds, and broadening of the librational band in sufficiently narrow pores attributed to dangling OH bonds at the water–graphene interface. Source: Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics study, 2022. | Spectral features are interpreted with structural and theoretical analysis; they are not a direct image or count of every bond. |
| One- and two-layer water in graphene slit pores | A 2020 simulation study describes oscillatory dynamics and reports that the mechanism of slowdown differs between one- and two-layer water. Source: Journal of Molecular Liquids study, 2020. | Mobility changes with confinement, but the mechanism depends on the number of layers and the modeled system. |
The contrast matters: a network-structure result from a graphene monolayer does not by itself predict the mobility of water in a nanotube. Nor does a slow relaxation reported for one tube establish that confinement always slows water. Structure and dynamics are related, but they are not interchangeable measurements.

How do scientists observe hydrogen bonding in confined water?
Spectroscopy probes molecular response
Hydrogen bonds are often inferred from how water responds to light rather than directly counted molecule by molecule. The 2022 THz study of water lamellae in graphene-based pores assigns distinct spectral responses to intralayer and interlayer hydrogen bonds. It also attributes librational-band broadening in sufficiently narrow pores to dangling OH groups at the water–graphene interface. These are interpretations supported by structural and theoretical analysis, not a literal image of each bond. Read the THz study.

Simulations estimate network structure
Molecular simulations and hydrogen-bond network analysis can estimate how many neighbours molecules have and how the network changes over time. Their conclusions depend on the modeled pore, walls and water, as well as on how a hydrogen bond is defined. A result from one model is therefore evidence about that modeled system, not a universal measurement for every nanopore.

A meaningful comparison needs more than the label “confined water.” Check the geometry, number of layers, wall material and hydrophilicity; distinguish structural measures of connectivity from dynamical measures of relaxation or mobility; and note whether the evidence is experimental or computational. Temperature and pressure should also be considered when reported. These factors can vary together, so a difference between studies does not isolate a single cause.

The field does not have one cross-system statistic that captures the effect of confinement on hydrogen bonding. A 2023 review notes that open questions remain about water in structurally and chemically complex nanopores. That review frames the limits of current understanding.
