Cancel the checkout or order through the retailer if that option is available; if it has shipped or arrived, ask the seller about its return process. Contact your payment provider promptly if the charge may be unauthorized or otherwise qualifies as a billing error. The right remedy depends on the transaction status, who charged you, the payment method, the merchant’s terms and your location.
First, find out whether the purchase is still in progress
- Go to the retailer directly. Open its known website or app and check your account’s order history or checkout status. Avoid links in unexpected texts or emails.
- If checkout is still pending, look for a cancellation control. Use it promptly and save the confirmation. OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout specification describes canceling a checkout session while it remains eligible; a completed or already canceled session cannot be canceled through that endpoint. This is technical documentation for that checkout protocol, not a guarantee that every retailer or AI assistant provides the same control.
- If the order was accepted, contact the seller. Use contact details on the retailer’s official site. Provide the order number, say what was unintended, ask whether the order can be stopped before fulfillment, and request written confirmation. For a marketplace purchase, contact the seller first and use the marketplace’s escalation process if needed.
Keep the order confirmation, payment details, date and amount, status updates, tracking information, seller messages and relevant AI conversation or activity history if available. The FTC recommends retaining confirmations, receipts and communications; saving the assistant’s activity record is an additional practical step.

What to do at each order stage

For U.S. mail, internet or telephone orders, the FTC says sellers must ship within the time they promised, or within 30 days if they gave no shipping time. If shipment is delayed, the seller must notify you and offer the choice of agreeing to the delay or canceling for a full refund. If the seller does not ship, the refund must be a full refund rather than store credit. See the FTC’s guidance on billing errors, unreceived items and unordered products.

A purchase you regret is not automatically an unauthorized charge. Consider contacting the card issuer or bank if you did not authorize the transaction, the amount is wrong, the item was not delivered as agreed, or another billing error may apply. Explain what happened accurately, including whether you had given the assistant permission to buy the item. Contact the issuer promptly and follow its current dispute instructions.

U.S. credit-card billing errors
For U.S. credit cards, FTC guidance says a written billing-error dispute generally must be sent within 60 days after the first statement showing the error is sent to preserve full protections under the Fair Credit Billing Act. The issuer generally must acknowledge the dispute in writing within 30 days unless it resolves it first, and resolve it within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days. During an investigation, you need not pay the disputed amount or related charges, but the undisputed portion of the bill remains due. Check your issuer’s current instructions and send the dispute to the address or channel it specifies.
Debit cards and other payment methods
Debit-card protections differ from credit-card protections; the same refund rights may not apply to a wrong item or non-delivery. Contact your bank or issuer as soon as you discover a possible problem and follow up in writing. Rules for other payment methods, and the protections available outside the United States, depend on the provider and jurisdiction.

If the charge is for the AI service itself
Separate a retail purchase made through an assistant from a charge for the assistant’s own subscription. The billing channel matters. For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI says web subscribers can request a refund through Help Center chat while logged in to the account associated with the charge. Apple-billed subscribers must cancel and request a refund through Apple; for Google Play purchases, OpenAI directs users to request a refund through its Help Center. Canceling a subscription stops future renewals but does not by itself establish refund eligibility. OpenAI describes payments as generally non-refundable subject to applicable rights and stated exceptions, including review of validated unauthorized charges and verified billing errors. Its refund instructions include regional differences; these procedures should not be assumed to apply to other AI services.
Marketplace purchases and suspected scams
Marketplace operators do not all handle payment, delivery, returns and refunds the same way. Check the marketplace’s rules and any short deadline that applies. If the seller does not resolve the issue, follow the marketplace’s escalation process and keep copies of your messages. The FTC’s marketplace guidance recommends contacting the seller promptly, then the marketplace if necessary, and reporting a dishonest business to the marketplace and your state attorney general.

If you suspect fraud, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam in 2022; that figure concerns shopping scams generally, not orders placed by AI assistants.

Prevent another unintended purchase
- Review the assistant’s purchase permissions and connected retailer accounts; disable buying access or require confirmation before checkout if those controls are available.
- Remove saved payment methods from integrations you do not use, and review account activity for unfamiliar orders.
- Use a separate, low-limit payment method for automated purchases if your provider offers one, and enable transaction alerts.
- Keep the assistant’s order confirmations and activity history until the order and any return or payment dispute are resolved.
