Start by checking which networks work where you actually use your phone. Then compare plans on the same basis: data and call needs, total cost over the full term, contract flexibility, roaming, and support. A coverage map can narrow the options, but it cannot promise reception inside a particular building.
The detailed consumer guidance below is UK-specific. If you are elsewhere, use the same comparison steps but check your local regulator’s rules and coverage tools.

Which network works best where you use your phone?
Coverage is local. Check your home, workplace, commute, and regular destinations rather than relying on a nationwide claim. A network that performs well in one area may be unreliable on a particular street or indoors.

Ofcom notes that buildings, trees, and seasonal foliage can make real-world service differ from predictions. Its indicators also include crowd-sourced measurements from users. The live checker is the best place to see current map information; Ofcom says it aims to update coverage data every three months or alongside its Connected Nations publications.

Use the map to shortlist networks, then check the provider’s own coverage tool. If indoor reliability is essential and the map is uncertain, ask people who use the service in the same building or area. Ask the provider whether Wi-Fi calling or another supported option could help. An outdoor prediction does not establish indoor reception.
Map limitations apply outside the UK, too. The US Federal Communications Commission says its National Broadband Map shows mobile areas where users should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor coverage. It can help compare reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage, but it is not a guarantee of service at a specific address.
Does the brand use its own network?
Compare the retail provider and the underlying mobile network as separate things. In the UK, many brands use one of the four main operators’ networks, so two differently named providers may rely on the same radio network. Their prices, customer support, plan rules, and extras can still differ.

Check the provider’s current network disclosure for the specific plan you are considering. Do not assume a brand’s host network from an old list or from the brand name alone: arrangements can change.
How much data, calling, and speed do you need?
Look at several recent bills or usage records in your account app. Compare your typical data use, calls, texts, and hotspot use, and allow for time away from Wi-Fi. Streaming, navigation, and video calls can push data use higher than browsing or messaging.
Compare what happens when you reach the allowance, not just the size of it. Providers may reduce speeds, charge for extra use, or stop service until the next billing period or until you buy more data. These outcomes are not interchangeable. “Unlimited” can also come with speed, fair-use, or roaming restrictions, so check the plan’s terms.

What will the plan cost over the full commitment?
Don’t judge a plan by its headline monthly price alone. Add any upfront fee, monthly airtime, handset payments, and extras over the contract term. Include disclosed price changes and costs for services you expect to use, such as roaming. Compare plans with similar allowances and contract lengths.
In the UK, Ofcom advises providers to disclose a specified price rise in pounds and pence before a customer signs. Check the contract summary and key terms to see the amount and timing that apply to the offer in front of you. Also check whether handset finance is a separate agreement from the airtime plan.
Should you choose SIM-only, pay monthly with a handset, or PAYG?
The right package type depends on whether you already have a suitable phone and how much flexibility you want.

SIM-only
If your current phone works and is compatible with the network, compare SIM-only plans. You pay for service rather than a bundled handset, and can assess the phone’s cost separately if you later decide to replace it.
Pay monthly with a handset
A handset-inclusive plan spreads the device cost across payments, but can cost more over the long run. Before signing, check whether the airtime and device payments are separate and what you would owe if you leave early; handset costs and termination charges may both matter.

PAYG can suit a light user who wants to avoid a long contract. The trade-off is that each unit of use may cost more, so compare expected spending rather than assuming PAYG is automatically cheaper.

How flexible is the contract if you need to leave?
Check the contract length, notice period, cancellation process, switching process, and early-exit cost before committing. Ask what remains payable if you leave early and whether the handset agreement ends with the service agreement. Read the contract summary and key terms rather than relying on a sales-page summary.
Will roaming work on your trips?
Check the exact countries you plan to visit, whether roaming is included, and any data or fair-use limit. Compare daily fees, add-on prices, and out-of-bundle rates. Phrases such as “EU roaming” or “international roaming” do not establish that a particular destination or allowance is covered; verify the country and dates that matter to you.
A travel eSIM may be an alternative for some itineraries, but check device compatibility and account for setup, billing, and phone configuration. In an Ofcom 2025 comparison, the modeled trip used 10 GB over 10 days, assuming 1 GB per day. The cost comparison covered selected travel eSIMs and UK network-operator roaming charges for pay-monthly customers whose tariffs did not include roaming at the destination and whose UK allowance exceeded the modeled use. It compared financial cost only, not the added effort, and is not a universal usage recommendation or a current price quote.
Does your phone support the network features you need?
Before paying extra for a 5G plan, check whether your current phone supports 5G on the network you intend to use. Verify other requirements, such as eSIM support or whether the phone is locked, with the handset maker and provider. If you need a replacement, a compatible unlocked or refurbished 5G phone may be an option; a new handset is not a prerequisite for comparing operators.
How should you compare the final providers?
- Write down the places where service matters most and whether calls, data, or both are essential at each.
- Check coverage for the underlying networks at those places using a regulator map and the provider’s own checker. Investigate indoor uncertainty directly.
- Review recent usage and identify the allowance, speed, overage, or cut-off rule that fits your habits.
- Decide whether your current handset is suitable. If it is, compare SIM-only options; if it is not, separate handset and airtime costs where possible.
- Calculate the full commitment, including upfront costs, scheduled price changes, extras, roaming, and early-exit exposure.
- Compare support and complaint information for the remaining providers, then confirm current coverage, plan terms, and the contract summary before buying.
Ofcom-accredited comparison sites may help UK customers weigh deals, but eligibility and market coverage vary. Check the same plan details directly with the provider before signing.
