Star Citizen is the currently playable persistent-universe game; Squadron 42 is a separate, unreleased single-player campaign. A Star Citizen game package generally includes access to the persistent universe and at least one ship, but it does not automatically mean your account includes Squadron 42. Check the exact pledge contents in your RSI account before buying or relying on an older package.
What each game includes
| Item | What it is | Availability and access |
|---|---|---|
| Star Citizen | A persistent-universe game played in RSI’s live environment. Game packages generally include Star Citizen access and at least one ship; other items depend on the package. | Playable now with an RSI account and a game package. |
| Squadron 42 | A separate single-player campaign. | Still in development and not currently available to download, according to RSI support updated February 4, 2026. |
Does Star Citizen include Squadron 42?
Not necessarily. RSI treats the campaign as a distinct pledge or entitlement, so do not assume that a Star Citizen package includes it. RSI’s current setup checklist distinguishes the Squadron 42 standalone pledge from other game packages, which include Star Citizen and at least one ship. The exact contents and extras vary by package. RSI’s Get Started: Checklist and Pledges FAQ explain the distinction.

Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI says Squadron 42 is still in development and is not available for download. The campaign’s pledge entitlement is not the same as an available download: RSI says people with a pledge that includes Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is completed, it has been tested, and it has been released. See RSI’s download availability guidance, updated February 4, 2026.
What Star Citizen package do you need?
To play the persistent-universe game, you need an RSI account and a game package. A standalone ship pledge is an add-on, not a game package, and does not by itself grant access to play. Package contents can include the game, a ship, and other items; check the specific listing rather than assuming every package contains the same extras. RSI’s Pledges FAQ also says ships cannot be split out of a game or ship package.

How to check what your RSI account includes
- Sign in to your RSI account and open the account hangar.
- Find the relevant pledge and expand its details.
- Read the listed contents to confirm whether it includes Star Citizen access, Squadron 42, a ship, or other items. Do not infer entitlements from the package name alone.
This is especially important for older accounts: the package’s actual contents in the hangar, not a general rule about current packages, determine what that account has.
Why older packages may differ
RSI announced a package split effective February 14, 2016. Its announcement said that pre-split Star Citizen backers and pre-split Squadron 42 packages had access to both the persistent universe and the single-player campaign, while newer packages could cover one segment and add the other separately. That announcement is historical context, not a guarantee that every legacy account has the same entitlements. Check the pledge details in your hangar.
