What to Do If a ZIP File Won’t Open or Extract

Check the download, device support, password, storage, and error type to find the right next step when a ZIP file will not open or extract.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a ZIP file will not open or extract, first confirm that it really is a ZIP and that its download finished. Then try your device’s built-in extractor, check for a password prompt and enough free space, and use the error message to distinguish an unsupported format from a damaged archive. A password problem needs the correct password; a damaged download usually needs a fresh copy.

Start with the file and its source

Check the file’s name and extension. A ZIP archive normally ends in .zip, but a familiar-looking name alone does not prove that the file is a valid or safe archive. If it came from an untrusted source, do not open or extract it.

If the download was interrupted, the file is unexpectedly small, or the error appeared after a failed download, download it again from the original sender or service. A partial archive can look like a format or corruption problem.

Try the built-in extractor for your device

Windows

In File Explorer, right-click the ZIP folder and choose Extract All…, then select a destination and extract. To take out one item instead, open the ZIP and drag that item to a folder. These are Microsoft’s documented steps for Windows: Zip and unzip files.

Format support depends on Windows version. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR, but does not support operations on encrypted archive files. Do not assume that this format support applies to older Windows releases. If the archive is encrypted or uses a format your Windows version cannot handle, use a compatible archive application.

Android

In Files by Google, locate the .zip file, tap it, and choose Extract. The app supports ZIP files only, and the extracted files are saved beside the original ZIP. Google notes that a full device can cause extraction to fail; free up storage or move data to an SD card, then try again. See Google’s unzip instructions.

Use the error to find the cause

A password is requested

Ask the person or service that created the archive for the correct password, and check that you are using the password for this particular file. If the archive is encrypted, the extractor must support that encryption as well as the archive format. Microsoft says File Explorer in Windows 11 version 24H2 does not perform operations on encrypted archives, so a compatible third-party archive application may be needed.

Windows cannot reveal an unknown archive password. A Microsoft Q&A community response likewise says an unknown password cannot be removed with Windows tools; it is not a formal product specification. See the Microsoft Q&A answer. Do not treat a password prompt as evidence that the ZIP is corrupt.

“Not an archive,” header, or unsupported-method errors

The file may not be a ZIP despite its name, may be incomplete, or may contain a header or compression method the extractor cannot handle. 7-Zip’s FAQ describes incorrect headers and unsupported methods among possible reasons a ZIP cannot be opened. If you trust the source, try a current archive utility that supports the file’s format; a second application can help identify a compatibility issue, but it cannot guarantee extraction.

CRC or data errors during extraction

A CRC or data error means the extractor encountered a problem with the archive contents while reading them. It is different from a password prompt or simply lacking support for the format. The archive may be damaged or incomplete; first get a fresh copy from the original source rather than assuming a repair will work.

Extraction fails without a clear format error

Check that the destination folder is writable and that the device has enough free space for the extracted contents. The archive’s compressed size can be much smaller than the space its files need after extraction. On Android, Google specifically identifies a full device as a possible cause; free space or move data to an SD card before retrying.
