There is no universal winner: Ethereum is a fit when you want Ethereum Layer 1 settlement or a particular rollup’s security and scaling model; Avalanche is a fit when your application benefits from its multi-chain design and a chain-specific validator set; Solana is a fit when shared global state and atomic composition across programs matter. Choose by your application’s security and settlement needs, desired control over chain configuration, and interaction pattern—not by a single TPS or fee figure.
How the three networks are structured
| Network | Architecture | What an application team needs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | Ethereum Layer 1 plus multiple scaling approaches. Rollups execute transactions outside Layer 1 and post data to it; sidechains operate under their own rules. | Assess the particular scaling network’s security model and relationship to Ethereum settlement. “Ethereum scaling” does not describe one uniform product. |
| Avalanche | A multi-chain system. Each Avalanche L1 has its own validator set, while the P-Chain maintains validator records across the network. | Evaluate the specific L1’s validator set and configuration rather than assuming every Avalanche chain has identical properties. Avalanche’s Builder Hub recommends launching new chains as L1s. |
| Solana | Solana’s official DeFi documentation emphasizes a single global state. | Consider whether the application benefits from programs sharing state and composing within one atomic transaction. |
These are different ways of organizing execution and settlement, not interchangeable labels for the same design. Ethereum’s guidance also notes that high Layer 1 demand can mean slower transactions and gas costs that are not viable for every user; rollups can distribute Layer 1 data fees across users.

Performance figures: useful context, not a head-to-head test
The available official materials give figures with different definitions and contexts. They should not be read as results from a matched workload or as guarantees under current network conditions.
| Network | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum | About 15 minutes to finality, according to Ethereum.org, whose page was last updated July 23, 2026. | Finality is a strong guarantee that a block will not be reverted. It is distinct from a transaction’s inclusion or confirmation. |
| Avalanche / Avalanche L1 | 2,500 TPS and approximately 0.8 seconds to finality, as listed in an Avalanche Builder Hub lesson; its publication date is not shown. | The lesson distinguishes throughput from finality. These are its stated figures, not a guaranteed live result or a matched benchmark against Ethereum and Solana. |
| Solana | Approximately 400 ms block times, according to Solana’s official DeFi documentation; a publication date is not shown. | A block-time figure is not, by itself, a directly comparable finality measure. |
Throughput, block time, confirmation, finality, and security assumptions answer different questions. A TPS figure alone cannot establish which network will perform best for your application. For a real deployment decision, compare the same workload over the same period where current data is available.

Fees depend on network design and demand
- Ethereum: Layer 1 fees can rise when demand is high. Rollups may lower the per-user share of Layer 1 data costs, but their implementations and fee structures differ.
- Avalanche: Fees do not follow Ethereum’s mechanism. An Avalanche support article describes variable asynchronous block issuance and fee adjustment based on gas used over time.
- Solana: Official developer documentation characterizes fees as sub-cent. That is not a promise about the cost of every transaction or a current quote.
These source descriptions are not a live fee comparison. Before choosing a route for a transaction or estimating application operating costs, check current conditions on the specific network or L1 and account for the application’s actual transaction pattern.
Which network fits which use case?
Choose Ethereum or an Ethereum rollup when settlement and security assumptions lead
Start with Ethereum when your application needs Ethereum Layer 1 settlement, or when you have identified a rollup whose security and data-posting model fits your requirements. Treat the rollup as a specific system to evaluate: execution may happen outside Layer 1, and not every scaling network inherits the same security properties. A sidechain’s own rules and security assumptions also need separate scrutiny.

Choose an Avalanche L1 when chain-level control is important
Avalanche’s multi-chain structure is relevant if your application needs a dedicated chain configuration or its own validator set. That control comes with a design decision: the L1’s validator set and configuration are specific to that chain, so assess them directly rather than relying on a general claim about Avalanche as a whole.

Solana’s documented single global state and composable programs can suit applications whose interactions benefit from programs working together in one atomic transaction. This is an architectural fit question; the documented block time and fee characterization do not independently establish how a particular workload will behave.

A practical way to make the decision
- Define the required guarantee. Decide what must be settled, what level of finality the application needs, and which security assumptions are acceptable.
- Map the application’s interaction pattern. Determine whether it needs Ethereum settlement via a specific rollup, a chain with its own validator set, or shared state and atomic composition across programs.
- Check the exact deployment target. Compare the particular Ethereum scaling network, Avalanche L1, or Solana program environment—not only the base-network name.
- Measure the workload under comparable conditions. Use the same transaction types and time period when comparing latency, throughput, and fees. Do not use figures from unrelated official descriptions as if they were one benchmark.
