1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDNS-collector can receive DNStap streams from one or more DNS servers, optionally transform the events, and route them to a central log destination. For a basic deployment, configure a DNStap input, a logger such as Loki, and a routing policy that connects them; then validate the YAML and verify that a test event reaches the destination. The project documents this centralized pattern over TCP/TLS, but its quick-start listener and stdout output are only a smoke-test baseline.
How the deployment fits together
DNS-collector separates a telemetry path into pipeline components: an input receives DNStap, optional transformers alter or filter events, a routing policy forwards them, and an output logger sends them to a destination. A collector needs a routing policy pointing to a logger. The project describes each component as part of a pipeline stanza for flexible data flow routing: DNS-collector pipeline configuration.

For centralized collection, multiple remote DNS servers stream DNStap over network connections to one collector instance. The project depicts TCP/TLS connections and provides TLS options on its DNStap listener: centralized deployment.
Choose an installation method and destination
The project documents installation from precompiled binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, Docker containers, or a source build. Follow the current release’s platform-specific instructions; releases and documentation can change. The Docker example mounts a custom configuration file at /etc/dnscollector/config.yml. See the installation guide.

Choose the destination before writing its logger configuration. Available options include Loki, Elasticsearch, syslog, Kafka, Prometheus, files, and others. The project’s logger catalog labels Loki and Elasticsearch production-ready, while ClickHouse and InfluxDB are labeled beta. Those are project support labels, not an independent assessment of reliability, and may change. Compare the options against your existing stack and operational needs:
| Destination | What DNS-collector documents | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Loki | HTTP push logger with text, JSON, or flat JSON output; batching, retry, TLS, and authentication options. Project catalog: production-ready. | Grafana/Loki operations, label and query design, transport security, authentication, and batch behavior. |
| Elasticsearch | Direct logger integration. Project catalog: production-ready. | Cluster operations, indexing and retention, schema, and query workflows. |
| Syslog | Logger supports standard RFC3164/RFC5424 and TLS. | Receiver or SIEM compatibility, message format, and transport configuration. |
| Kafka | Producer logger publishes to topics. | Whether consumers need a brokered event stream and how delivery and retention are managed. |
| ClickHouse or InfluxDB | Both are listed as beta in the project catalog. | Whether beta support is acceptable and whether the database fits the query and operations model. |
See the logger catalog for the project’s current list and status labels.
Configure DNStap input and routing
Enable DNStap logging on each DNS server using that server’s own documentation, then direct its stream to the collector. DNS-collector accepts TCP or Unix DNStap streams; its TCP listener can be configured with a bind IP, port, TLS enablement, minimum TLS version, certificate file, and private key file. Refer to the project’s DNStap input options.

The project quick start listens on TCP port 6000 and prints events to stdout. Its example binds to 0.0.0.0, which listens on all interfaces; do not treat that sample as a production firewall policy or as a secure network recommendation. For a deployed service, choose an intentional bind address, permit connections only from authorized DNS servers, and configure TLS when the stream crosses a network that requires protection. The quick-start example is in the README.

- WIRED NETWORK USB PRINT SERVER: Connect a single USB 2.0 printer to a wired Ethernet LAN (RJ45); 10Base-T, 100Base-TX auto-sensing to ensure a reliable connection, letting you print from any network computer, across the office or over the Internet
- MANUAL NETWORK SETUP REQUIRED: Configuration via web interface (static IP or DHCP) using LPR queue “LP1"; Not plug-and-play, requires intermediate network knowledge for installation; Access our online FAQs for additional helpful tips and instructions
- USB PRINTER COMPATIBILITY: Works with most USB 2.0 printers using standard drivers; Not compatible with USB hubs, multi-function printers with proprietary drivers, or printers requiring full bi-directional communication
- COMPATIBILITY: The USB to Ethernet print server is USB 2.0 compliant and works with macOS and Windows; It also supports LPR network printing and Bonjour Print Services for broad compatibility; Included software is compatible with Windows only
- PRINT FROM ANYWHERE: Print from any computer connected to the Ethernet; This print server doesn’t require a wired connection to a computer, however it must be connected to your networking device (eg. router or switch) with the included RJ45 network cable
Here is a minimal collector-to-Loki pipeline based on the project’s sample. Adapt the listener address, transport security, endpoint, and output options to your environment:
pipelines:
- name: "dnstap-ingest"
dnstap:
listen-ip: "0.0.0.0"
listen-port: 6000
routing-policy:
forward: ["loki-output"]
- name: "loki-output"
lokiclient:
server-url: "http://loki:3100/loki/api/v1/push"
job-name: "dnscollector"
mode: "flat-json"
The http:// endpoint is shown as an example, not a recommendation for an untrusted network. Configure transport security and certificate verification to match the Loki endpoint and logger options. Do not put credentials in a shared example or expose secrets in readable configuration. The pipeline configuration guide and Loki logger documentation describe the relevant fields.

Start DNS-collector with that configuration and inspect its logs to confirm the input and output components start successfully.
The validation command and configuration structure are documented in the configuration guide.
Decide what data to transform or retain
DNS telemetry can expose queried names and client context. DNS-collector’s privacy transformer can mask IP host bits, hash query or response IP addresses, and retain only the second-level domain. Other available transformations can normalize names, filter traffic, or enrich events. Decide which details investigations and incident response actually require, then test the effect of minimization or filtering on representative queries before rollout. See the transformer documentation.

Plan capacity with your own workload
The project documentation does not provide a supported throughput-to-resource sizing matrix or a current workload-specific benchmark, so a universal CPU, memory, network, or storage recommendation is not established. Measure with representative event rates, retention and buffering requirements, and the destination’s ingestion limits. The listener’s default port and configuration buffer values are software settings, not performance guarantees.
