If a game reports a hardware ban on a used PC, don’t buy replacement parts yet. A publisher may ban a device, but that does not establish that the CPU itself was flagged or that changing any one component will clear the restriction. Confirm the exact game and notice through its official support channel, then check your seller’s return deadline.
First, confirm what the message actually says
“Hardware-banned” is not a universal status shared across games. Record the exact game, platform, error text or status notice, account status, and when the problem began. A launch failure or matchmaking restriction alone may not identify a device ban.

Check the game publisher’s official status or support route. For Call of Duty, Activision says a hardware-ban status can be checked on the affected device by signing in with an account in good standing in a crossplay title; a notification appears if hardware is banned. Activision’s Security and Enforcement Policy says hardware bans apply to a device, may extend across Call of Duty titles, can vary in length, and are not eligible for appeal. Activision also warns buyers to use caution with secondhand, shared, or publicly accessible devices.

That policy establishes a secondhand-device risk for Call of Duty; it does not say that a CPU alone is banned or identify which hardware identifier triggered a restriction. Do not assume a seller’s description, forum post, or generic error proves a particular component was flagged.

Contact the publisher and preserve your purchase records
Use the game’s official support channel and describe the situation plainly: you bought the device or component used and encountered the notice. Include the purchase date, listing, receipt, and a screenshot of the exact message. Provide serial numbers or model details only when the official support team requests them.
Do not count on an appeal being available. Activision’s hardware-ban policy says hardware bans are not appealable. Its separate ban appeal guidance concerns account penalties: it says permanent account bans may be overturned only when the infraction resulted from account hacking, while temporary bans and limited matchmaking are ineligible. Those account rules do not create an appeal route for an Activision hardware ban.

For games on Steam, distinguish a developer-issued game ban from a Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) ban. Steam directs players with a game ban to the game developer’s support information; follow the instructions for the specific game rather than assuming Steam can review every publisher’s enforcement decision. See Steam Support’s explanation of game bans.
Protect your option to return or dispute the purchase
- Save the product listing, seller messages, proof of payment, and the ban notice.
- Check the seller’s return terms and any marketplace or payment-provider deadlines promptly.
- Ask the seller or marketplace what return or dispute process applies, and describe the issue factually.
Return and dispute outcomes depend on the seller, marketplace, and applicable terms; a ban notice does not guarantee a refund. Keeping records and acting before deadlines preserves the options that may be available to you.

Don’t replace parts based on an unknown hardware identifier
Public policies cited here do not establish that replacing a CPU, motherboard, or drive will remove a ban. They also do not identify a universal list of components that games flag. Until the publisher confirms what the notice means, spending money on a part swap is speculation. Do not use tools or services that change or spoof hardware identifiers to evade enforcement.

A Windows activation warning is a licensing issue, not evidence of a game hardware ban. Microsoft says activation can fail on a pre-owned PC if a product key was reused beyond its license terms, and substantial hardware changes can also affect activation. For a used PC, Microsoft’s activation guidance says to ask the seller for the original media and product key; if they are unavailable or invalid, a new license may be needed.

Likewise, Riot’s localized Vanguard Restrictions guidance describes restrictions when Vanguard detects a system configuration that may facilitate cheating and directs players to the displayed error for required settings. That is not confirmation of a CPU-only ban; follow the exact error’s official instructions.
