Opening a suspicious email or link does not, by itself, prove that your phone was compromised. The next steps depend on what happened: whether you only opened it, entered information, downloaded or installed something, approved access, or gave someone remote control. Stop interacting with the message and use the steps below to protect any exposed accounts or information.
First, identify what happened
Do not reopen the email or link to investigate. Close the page, then work out which of these situations applies:

- You opened the email or link but did not enter information or download anything.
- You entered a password, payment details, or other personal information.
- You downloaded a file, installed an app, or approved a profile or permission.
- You allowed someone to access or control your phone remotely.
These are different kinds of exposure. A link opening is not proof of infection, while credentials entered on a fake sign-in page may put the associated account at risk even if the phone itself is unaffected.
If you only opened the email or link
Close the page and do not reply, tap additional links, call a number in the message, or download anything. If the message might relate to a real account or transaction, contact the organization through a website address or phone number you already know is genuine—not the details in the email. The FTC recommends verifying a message independently rather than using its links or contact information (FTC: How To Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams).

If you entered a password or account details
- Go to the service directly. Use its official app or type a known website address yourself. If this phone is behaving suspiciously, use another trusted device for account changes.
- Change the exposed password promptly. If you reused it on other services, change it there too, using a unique password for each account.
- Secure your email account first if needed. Email often receives password-reset messages, so an exposed email password can put other accounts at risk.
- Review account access and recovery details. Check signed-in devices or sessions and confirm that recovery email addresses and phone numbers are yours. Sign out unfamiliar sessions if the service provides that option.
- Enable two-factor authentication where available, and follow the service’s official security guidance.
For an Apple Account, Apple advises changing the password immediately if it may have been entered on a scam website and ensuring two-factor authentication is enabled (Apple Support: Recognise and avoid social engineering schemes including phishing messages, phony support calls and other scams). For a potentially compromised Google Account, use Google’s account-security guidance (Google Account Help: Secure a hacked or compromised Google Account).
If you entered payment or identity information
Contact your bank, card issuer, or relevant institution using a trusted route, such as the number on your card or statement or the institution’s official website. Explain what information you shared and ask which protections are appropriate; the right response depends on what was exposed and where you live. Watch for unfamiliar transactions and follow the institution’s instructions.

For U.S. readers whose personal or financial information was taken, the FTC directs people to IdentityTheft.gov for steps tailored to their situation. Reporting and identity-protection options vary by country.
If you downloaded a file, installed an app, or approved device access
Android
Do not reopen a suspicious download or app. Google’s guidance recommends checking that Google Play Protect is on, installing Android and security updates, removing apps you do not trust or need, and reviewing your Google Account security. Menu labels can vary by Android version and phone maker. If signs of malware continue after these steps, Google says you may need to contact the phone’s manufacturer or reset the device. A scan or lack of obvious symptoms cannot establish with certainty that a phone is clean.
iPhone
If iOS displays a malware alert naming an app, follow the alert’s instructions to delete that app. If you installed an unfamiliar configuration profile, review Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Apple cautions that a school- or work-managed phone should be handled with its administrator; removing a profile also removes its associated settings and data. If someone had remote access
Stop using the phone for banking or other sensitive account changes until you can get help from trusted support. Do not use a support number or link supplied in the suspicious message. The FTC advises people who were scammed to seek help through the relevant company or device maker’s trusted channels (FTC: What To Do if You Were Scammed).
Review account sharing and phone security
iPhone: Safety Check
On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. It can help review sharing, connected devices, app access, your passcode, and Apple Account security. Some options may be limited by device-management profiles or Screen Time settings. See Apple Support: Safety Check for an iPhone with iOS 16 or later.
Android: Play Protect and Google Account security
Use Google Play Protect, install available system and security updates, remove untrusted apps, and review your Google Account Security Checkup. The exact settings path varies across Android versions and manufacturers; Google’s guidance covers the relevant checks (Google Account Help: Remove malware or unsafe software).
Report the message
Use your email provider’s phishing or report-spam control, and notify any impersonated organization through its official website. In the United States, the FTC lists forwarding phishing emails to [email protected] and reporting attempts at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If an email impersonates Apple, Apple asks that it be forwarded to [email protected] (Apple Support phishing guidance). These reporting routes are U.S.-oriented; use the appropriate local reporting service elsewhere.
