Stop charging and stop using the device immediately. If the battery is smoking, venting, burning, hissing, producing a strong unusual smell, or heating rapidly, warn people nearby, leave the area, avoid the smoke, call your local emergency number, and do not return until responders say it is safe. Do not open, puncture, squeeze, flatten, or remove a swollen battery. Once the immediate danger has passed, contact the device manufacturer or a certified battery technician and arrange specialist disposal.

First decide whether this is a swollen battery or an active fire

The safest response depends on what the device is doing now. A battery that is merely bulging still requires immediate isolation, but smoke, flames, venting, explosive sounds, or rapidly increasing heat turn the situation into an emergency.

Hazard state What you may see What to do
Swollen or unusually hot, with no smoke or flame Bulging case, lifted screen or back cover, blistering, discoloration, abnormal charging, or heat that is greater than usual Stop charging and using it. If safe, turn it off and move people and combustible materials away. Do not dismantle or transport it casually. Arrange manufacturer or certified-technician help.
Smoking, venting, hissing, popping, crackling, whistling, leaking, or rapidly rising heat Smoke or vapor, sharp odor, chemical leak, intense heat, or sounds suggesting the cell is releasing gas Evacuate, keep away from smoke, close doors only if you can do so while escaping, call the local emergency number, and stay out. Do not re-enter for the device.
Visible flame or an established fire Flames, burning materials, or a fire spreading beyond the device Raise the alarm, evacuate, call emergency services, and let trained responders handle it. Follow only fire-service or manufacturer instructions specific to your location and device.

GOV.UK treats smoke from a battery or device as a fire already started: raise the alarm, get out, stay out, and call 999 in the United Kingdom. Other countries use different emergency numbers. London Fire Brigade and Fire and Rescue NSW likewise advise professional response when a lithium battery is damaged or overheating.

Immediate steps for a swollen or overheating device

  1. Stop energy input. Unplug the charger only if you can reach the plug without approaching a smoking, burning, hissing, or rapidly heating device. Never continue charging to “see whether it settles down.” If the charger is across a hazard area, leave it connected and evacuate.
  2. Stop handling the device. If it is safe, use its normal power control to turn it off. Do not press a raised screen or cover back into place. Do not open the casing, remove screws, disconnect an internal pack, or attempt a battery swap.
  3. Create distance. Keep children, pets, and other people away. Clear paper, fabrics, solvents, and other easily ignited materials from the surrounding area only if you can do this without touching or moving the device. Avoid breathing any smoke or vapor.
  4. Watch for escalation from a safe position. New hissing, popping, smoke, a strong odor, leakage, flame, or rapidly increasing temperature means you should leave immediately and call emergency services. Do not stay nearby to monitor it.
  5. Arrange qualified handling. For a battery that remains intact but swollen, contact the manufacturer’s support channel or an authorized service provider. Tell them the battery is swollen or overheating and ask for their transport and hand-off instructions.

Never touch a swollen or ruptured battery with bare hands. Fire and Rescue NSW warns that heat and chemicals from a damaged cell can cause severe burns. If contact with leaking material occurs, move away and follow your local emergency or poison-control guidance rather than trying to clean the battery yourself.

Why silicon-anode cells can swell

Silicon-anode batteries are still lithium-based cells, but they use silicon, often alongside graphite, at the negative electrode. Silicon alloys with lithium during charging and then contracts as lithium leaves during discharge. That repeated expansion and contraction places mechanical stress on particles, binders, separators, and the pouch or can surrounding the cell.

In a 2022 company filing, Enovix reported silicon-anode expansion of 20% or more, compared with less than 10% cyclic swelling in its cited conventional-graphite comparison. Those figures describe the company’s technology comparison, not a guaranteed value for every commercial silicon or silicon-carbon cell. Cell design, silicon loading, charging limits, temperature, age, and manufacturing quality all affect behavior.

Expansion can crack silicon particles and damage the package. Once internal layers or seals are compromised, unwanted reactions can generate gas and heat. A phone, laptop, power bank, tool, or other product may therefore show a bulge before a serious thermal event, although a bulge does not reveal exactly how much energy remains inside.

Laboratory evidence also shows why a damaged cell must not be treated as harmless. A peer-reviewed 2025 study in Particuology by Jiang and colleagues reported a 77% increase in heat release at 100% state of charge for unprotected floating silicon. In the tested pouch cells, the maximum temperature reached 875.2 °C. These were controlled experiments, not a universal temperature threshold for consumer devices. They do, however, demonstrate that silicon chemistry does not make a compromised cell safe.

Warning signs that require action

Physical deformation

  • A phone screen or laptop trackpad lifting away from the frame.
  • A back cover, battery pack, or power-bank shell that bows outward.
  • Blistering, discoloration, dents that were not caused by an impact, or a case that no longer closes normally.

Heat and charging changes

  • Extreme heat during light use or while idle.
  • Heat that rises quickly rather than gradually.
  • Charging that repeatedly stops, starts, takes an unusual amount of time, or fails altogether.

Sounds, smells, and emissions

  • Hissing, popping, crackling, or whistling.
  • A sharp, sweet, solvent-like, or otherwise unusual odor.
  • Smoke, vapor, fumes, or visible electrolyte leakage.
  • Intense flame or a flare-up around the device.

Any one of these signs is enough to stop using and charging the device. You do not need to identify the exact battery chemistry before taking protective action.

What you must not do

  • Do not puncture it. Piercing a pouch or cell can release flammable gas, expose reactive materials, and create an internal short circuit.
  • Do not squeeze, flatten, bend, or tape it shut. Mechanical force can damage separators and accelerate failure.
  • Do not remove an internal battery. A technician has the tools and procedures to isolate a pack without crushing it or shorting its terminals.
  • Do not put it in a freezer, refrigerator, sink, or container of water. Improvised cooling or immersion can create electrical, chemical, and handling hazards, and it is not a substitute for emergency response.
  • Do not carry it in a pocket, backpack, vehicle, or parcel. Movement and confined spaces can expose people and combustible materials if the cell vents.
  • Do not place it in household rubbish or ordinary recycling. Waste trucks and recycling facilities have suffered fires from damaged lithium batteries mixed into normal waste streams.
  • Do not assume a silicon-carbon label means the pack is safer when damaged. The anode chemistry changes performance characteristics; it does not remove the hazards of a failed lithium cell.

If the battery is removable

“Removable” does not automatically mean “safe to remove.” If the pack is visibly swollen, hot, leaking, or difficult to release, leave it in place and contact the manufacturer or a certified technician. Pulling against a bulge can tear the pouch or short contacts.

Only follow a manufacturer’s explicit procedure when the battery is cool, intact, and designed for user removal. If the instructions require prying, bending, puncturing adhesive, or using metal tools, stop and obtain professional service instead. Keep the device powered off and disconnected from chargers while waiting for instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the battery is sealed inside a phone, laptop, or other device

Do not remove the back cover or screen yourself. A swollen internal pack can be under pressure, and opening the product may damage the cell, display, wiring, or enclosure. Place the device where people will not handle it, keep combustible items away when this can be done safely, and use the manufacturer’s support process to identify an authorized repair route.

Tell support exactly what you observed: swelling, abnormal heat, smoke, odor, leakage, sounds, charging behavior, and whether the device is currently connected to power. If there has been smoke or flame, skip ordinary repair support and contact emergency services first.

What to do during smoke, venting, or fire

  1. Warn anyone nearby in a clear voice.
  2. Leave by the safest available route and keep away from smoke and vapors.
  3. Close doors behind you only when doing so does not delay escape.
  4. Call the local emergency number from outside or from a safe location. Give the address and say that a lithium battery or electronic device is involved.
  5. Do not re-enter to retrieve the device, a charger, documents, or pets until responders declare the area safe.

Fire authorities do not give one universal extinguishing recipe for every battery, device size, building, or jurisdiction. Some agencies provide water guidance for particular small devices, while other circumstances require different tactics. For that reason, do not publish or follow a generic “use this extinguisher” rule as a substitute for evacuation. Any suppression instruction should come from your local fire authority or the device manufacturer and should match the specific incident.

Safe hand-off and disposal

Contact the right party first

For an intact but swollen battery, ask the manufacturer for a take-back, replacement, or service route. An authorized repair center or certified battery technician can determine how to isolate and package the pack. Tell them it is damaged; do not describe it simply as an old battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a specialist waste channel

Damaged lithium batteries belong with a specialist battery recycler, hazardous-waste service, or manufacturer take-back program that accepts damaged cells. Availability and rules vary by country, state, and municipality. Ask the provider whether it accepts swollen or leaking batteries, whether it requires advance notice, and how it wants the device delivered. Some collection points accept only intact consumer batteries and will redirect damaged packs to a hazardous-waste contractor.

Do not ship or transport it casually

Air and road transport rules can restrict damaged lithium batteries. Do not put a swollen pack in a mailing envelope, ordinary parcel, checked luggage, or a vehicle without instructions from the certified service or waste authority. Follow their packaging, labeling, and appointment requirements exactly. If the battery is hot, smoking, leaking, or otherwise unstable, do not transport it yourself; call emergency services.

How to choose the next action

Question If yes If no
Is there smoke, flame, venting, hissing, explosive popping, or rapidly increasing heat? Evacuate and call emergency services. Do not handle or move the device. Continue to the next question.
Is the case swollen, blistered, leaking, or unusually hot? Stop charging and use; isolate people and combustibles; contact the manufacturer or certified technician. Unexpected charging failure or heat still warrants service rather than continued use.
Is the battery removable without tools and without force? Follow the manufacturer’s removal and disposal instructions only if the pack is cool and intact. Leave it installed and arrange professional handling.
Does a disposal site explicitly accept damaged lithium batteries? Follow its delivery and packaging instructions. Do not leave the battery there; ask for a specialist or hazardous-waste referral.

After the incident

Once emergency responders or a qualified technician has made the area safe, record the device model, battery markings, charger used, and what happened. Preserve photographs only if taking them does not require touching or approaching the device. Report a suspected product defect to the manufacturer and your national product-safety or consumer-protection authority when such a reporting route exists.

Do not resume use because the device cooled down or because the bulge appears smaller. Cooling does not reverse internal damage. A professional must decide whether the product can be repaired, whether the entire device requires replacement, and how the battery should be disposed of.

Key points to remember

  • Swelling or extreme heat is a stop-use, stop-charge condition.
  • Never open, puncture, squeeze, or bare-hand a swollen or ruptured battery.
  • Smoke, fumes, flame, hissing, or rapid heating means evacuate and call emergency services.
  • Silicon anodes can undergo greater cycle expansion than graphite, and silicon chemistry does not make a failed cell safe.
  • Manufacturer support, certified technicians, specialist recyclers, and hazardous-waste services are the appropriate channels for handling and disposal.
