Look for the setting in its current menu and adjust it directly if it is available. A changed screen alone does not prove that the update reset or removed anything.
For a broader settings reset, Sony’s Restore Default Settings option shows which settings will be affected and does not erase user or game data. Do not confuse it with Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), which delete data.

First, identify what changed
Separate a changed setting value from a moved menu, a missing feature, an update that did not finish, or a feature that is malfunctioning. Also check whether the console uses official or beta system software. The right next step depends on which of these you are seeing; there is no single restoration method for every post-update change.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and note the installed version. Sony documents this location on its system software support page.
- Check Sony’s current system software release information for that version before assuming a feature was deliberately changed. The support instructions below do not identify which update you installed or establish what any particular release changed.
- Open the menu relevant to the setting and look for it in its current location. If it is available, change that setting directly rather than resetting the console.
Choose the least disruptive remedy
Use the option that matches the symptom. Sony’s settings restore, Safe Mode tools, and console resets are distinct actions with different purposes and data consequences.

| Option | When it fits | Data implications |
|---|---|---|
| Change the individual setting | A known preference looks different and is still available in the menus. | No system reset is involved. |
| Restore Default Settings | You want to restore settings, including visual or audio defaults, rather than erase console data. | Sony says user and game data are not erased. Review the on-screen list of affected settings before confirming. |
| Clear System Software Cache | System features or performance are behaving abnormally. | A Safe Mode troubleshooting option, separate from resetting or reinstalling the console. |
| Rebuild Database | There is a system-content or database display issue, such as a deleted game icon still appearing on Home. | Scans the drive and creates a new database of system content; it is not a console reset. |
| Reset PS5 | You intentionally want to reset the console and remove its user data. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Last-resort software recovery following Sony’s instructions. | Deletes user data and removes the system software. |
| Stop Using Beta Version | The console is enrolled in the beta and you want to return to the latest official version. | Use only for beta software; it is not a general fix for consoles on official software. |
Restore settings without deleting games or user data
If several settings need to be restored, or the issue concerns visual or audio defaults, Sony provides Restore Default Settings at Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings. The console displays the settings that will be affected before you confirm. Read that list first, since it may include settings beyond the one you noticed.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation Support page says: “Restoring default settings doesn’t erase any user or game data, but other settings are affected.” See Sony’s Restore Default Settings instructions.

Use Safe Mode tools only for the symptoms they address
If a system feature or performance problem persists after checking the relevant settings, Sony lists two separate Safe Mode options that may help:
Recommended Free Tools
- Clear System Software Cache: listed for system feature issues or performance drops.
- Rebuild Database: scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. Sony says it can help with system feature issues or a deleted game icon that remains on the Home screen.
These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes for a changed preference. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions to access them. Do not select a reset or reinstall option by mistake.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
If the system software update failed
If the update is stuck or shows an error, use Sony’s update troubleshooting flow rather than treating it as a settings problem.
- Open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system software update, choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.
- If the update fails repeatedly, follow Sony’s manual USB update instructions. Sony specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file on its undated support page, accessed in 2026. Use Sony’s official file and instructions; this procedure is not necessary for an ordinary settings change.
Sony treats reinstalling the system software as a separate, more destructive recovery step. Its support page states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Reinstalling also removes the system software. If Sony’s instructions lead you to that option, back up data first and make sure you understand the consequences; do not choose it as a routine response to a changed toggle or menu.

If your PS5 is using beta software
Beta participants can return to the latest official system software using Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Stop Using Beta Version. This documented option applies to consoles using PS5 system software beta; it is not a general update rollback for other consoles. See Sony’s PS5 beta program instructions.
When the issue remains unresolved
If the specific setting is unavailable, the feature still malfunctions after appropriate troubleshooting, or the update cannot be completed using Sony’s steps, use PlayStation Support and its PlayStation Repairs diagnostics. A changed preference by itself is not evidence that the console needs repair.
