If a prediction-market position appears to settle incorrectly, preserve the complete record, compare the result with the contract’s exact wording and named source, and use the venue’s formal review or challenge process before its deadline. Do not rely on a support-chat summary, make an irreversible counter-trade, or assume a regulator can automatically reverse the balance.
Start by preserving every piece of evidence
Settlement disputes are decided from records, not from a trader’s recollection. Save the evidence before a market page changes, an account statement rolls over, or an on-chain transaction becomes difficult to identify.

- Market URL, contract title, ticker or market identifier, and the complete rules as displayed when you traded.
- Rule version, publication date, amendments, and any cancellation, void, tie, correction, or force-majeure language.
- The named resolution source and the source item used for settlement, including its publication time and time zone.
- Order IDs, trade IDs, quantities, prices, fees, fills, and timestamps with the applicable time zone.
- Account statements, position history, settlement notices, deposit and withdrawal records, and screenshots showing the original wording.
- Every support ticket, email, chat transcript, case number, and response.
For an on-chain market, also record the wallet addresses, chain and network, transaction hashes, oracle proposal ID, proposer address, challenge transaction, gas paid, and block timestamps. Exporting data is preferable to relying on a live dashboard that may later display only the final outcome.

A result can feel wrong while still complying with the contract. The first review is textual: read the definition of the event, the source hierarchy, and the cutoff rule exactly as written.

Confirm the resolution source
Determine whether the contract names an official statistic, government release, exchange price, election authority, weather station, or another source. A venue may be entitled to use that source even when other reputable reports show a different figure. Check whether the rule gives a backup source and which source controls if they conflict.
Confirm the time window
Look for the precise close time, time zone, publication deadline, observation period, and treatment of late revisions. “By Friday” may mean a specified UTC timestamp rather than the end of your local Friday. A release published after the cutoff may not qualify, even if it describes events that occurred earlier.
Read inclusion, exclusion, tie, and void clauses
Review whether partial results, acting officials, interim data, postponed events, duplicate records, rounding, or ties have special treatment. Some contracts cancel when the underlying event is abandoned; others use a stated fallback. A cancellation clause can produce a refund or void rather than a winning settlement.

Check corrections and force-majeure wording
Some rules specify whether a source’s later correction changes the result. Others lock the outcome to the first qualifying publication. Force-majeure language may address outages, missing data, or events that make the question impossible to resolve. Quote the relevant paragraph in your complaint instead of describing it loosely.

Use the venue’s official procedure before the deadline
Submit the dispute through the channel identified in the venue’s rules, help center, or account interface. The applicable deadline may be shorter than a general customer-support response time, so open a case immediately and ask the venue to confirm the filing time.
- Identify the contract. Include the market ID, title, settlement date, and your position.
- State the requested remedy. Ask for a corrected settlement, void, account adjustment, or a written confirmation that the published outcome follows the rule.
- Quote the controlling text. Copy the exact rule paragraph and identify the source, timestamp, and time zone that you believe was misapplied.
- Attach a chronological record. List trades, notices, source publications, your first report, and every subsequent reply.
- Request a written decision. Ask which rule version was used, what evidence was considered, who or what made the decision, and when any appeal or review period ends.
Keep the original ticket open until you have a final position or a clear escalation route. If support replies with a generic explanation, ask a focused follow-up question tied to one rule paragraph rather than opening multiple contradictory cases.
How the process differs by venue
Kalshi and exchange-rule disputes
Kalshi publishes exchange, contract, and clearinghouse materials, including contract drafts and regulatory documents. A draft does not guarantee that a contract will be listed, so the listed contract and its operative rule set control your position. Compare the market’s displayed terms with the exchange documentation in effect for that contract, then use the venue’s support or review channel.
Ask Kalshi to identify the exact contract version, resolution source, evidence, and decision authority. Deadlines are contract-specific; do not assume that the period for reporting a display error is the same as the period for challenging a settlement. If the dispute concerns an exchange rule, account adjustment, or potentially unlawful conduct, preserve the exchange’s written answer for any later regulatory complaint.

Polymarket and UMA oracle resolutions
Polymarket’s January 11, 2026 help article says markets are resolved by the UMA Optimistic Oracle under pre-defined market rules. Trading stops after resolution. Winning shares receive $1 and losing shares become worthless under the process described in that article.
The documented sequence is different from a conventional support-only review. A proposer submits an outcome with a bond. The proposed outcome then enters a two-hour challenge period. The help article states that an unsuccessful proposal forfeits a $750 bond and says, “If you do not agree with a proposed resolution, you can dispute the outcome.”
To challenge an outcome, first verify that the proposed answer conflicts with the market’s own wording, not merely with a preferred interpretation of the news. Identify the oracle proposal, the rule clause, and the evidence available before the challenge window closes. A challenge may require an on-chain transaction and additional funds for network fees; record the transaction hash and proposal status. Because the period is measured in hours, waiting for a support reply can cause you to lose the formal challenge opportunity.
Ask for an explanation that can be audited
A useful response should allow another person to reproduce the decision. Request these specific items:

- The rule version or publication date used for settlement.
- The exact paragraph and interpretation applied.
- The source document, URL or identifier, publication timestamp, and time zone.
- Any data snapshot, oracle transaction, proposal ID, or block reference.
- The identity of the decision-maker, review team, or automated process where disclosure is available.
- The deadline, format, cost, and prerequisites for an appeal, correction request, or challenge.
- Whether the venue can place a hold on disputed funds or issue a provisional adjustment.
Ask the venue to distinguish a rule-based denial from a technical error. Those are different disputes: the first concerns interpretation, while the second may involve a stale interface, duplicated fill, incorrect quantity, or accounting mismatch.

Build a chronology
Prepare a one-page timeline with times in one time zone. Include when you entered the trade, when the source published the relevant information, when the venue announced settlement, when you contacted support, and every response. Attach the rule and evidence once, label each file, and calculate the amount in dispute from the account statement.
Determine jurisdiction and registration
Regulatory options depend on the venue, product, customer location, and whether the operator is registered for the activity at issue. A complaint to a regulator does not automatically freeze a market, reverse a settlement, or guarantee compensation. Confirm the venue’s legal entity and jurisdiction from its official disclosures before selecting a regulator.

The CFTC provides a Complaint Form for information sent to its Division of Enforcement. Participation in the whistleblower program requires a Form TCR. The CFTC also describes a Reparations Program for complaints against CFTC-registered futures professionals, with cases decided by a CFTC Judgment Officer. Use the route that matches the conduct and registration status; filing the wrong form can delay review.
In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC stated, “The Division has full authority to police illegal trading practices occurring on any DCM.” The advisory also said designated contract markets have an independent duty to maintain audit trails, conduct surveillance, and enforce their rules. Include the venue’s records and your chronology so investigators can assess whether the issue concerns an isolated account error, a rule violation, or broader trading conduct.
Other possible avenues
Depending on the jurisdiction, you may have access to a financial ombudsman, consumer-protection agency, court, arbitration, or a contractual appeal panel. Check the venue agreement for governing law, arbitration clauses, notice requirements, and limitation periods. Do not assume that a regulator’s intake process substitutes for a contractual appeal deadline.
Actions to avoid while the dispute is open
- Do not make an irreversible counter-trade. A hedge can create a second exposure and will not necessarily reverse an incorrect balance.
- Do not withdraw or transfer disputed funds if the venue may adjust the account. A transfer can complicate reconciliation or trigger a recovery demand.
- Do not delete wallet or device records. Preserve transaction data, browser exports, and authentication alerts.
- Do not edit screenshots. Keep original files and note when each screenshot was taken.
- Do not rely on social-media posts as a formal appeal. Public discussion may help identify a contact, but it does not prove that a deadline was met.
- Do not send seed phrases, private keys, passwords, or one-time codes. A legitimate review should not require them.

What a strong dispute submission looks like
Use a subject line such as “Settlement review request — [market ID] — rule clause [number].” In the first paragraph, state the outcome, amount, and remedy requested. In the next paragraph, quote the rule and identify the source evidence. Add a numbered timeline, an attachment index, and a specific list of questions. End by asking for the appeal deadline and a written decision.

For example, a concise allegation would say that the contract required the first release from a named source before 17:00 UTC, that the venue used a later correction instead, and that the rule does not authorize corrections after the cutoff. Attach both versions with timestamps. Avoid claiming “the market was manipulated” unless you can identify conduct and evidence supporting that allegation; otherwise describe the observable discrepancy.
Limits of a successful challenge
Even when a venue agrees that an error occurred, the remedy may be limited by its rules. It might correct an account entry, void a contract, return a bond, reopen a process, or determine that no adjustment is possible after funds have been distributed. Ask whether fees, gas costs, taxes, or consequential trading losses are included. A regulatory complaint may lead to investigation or enforcement without producing a private payout.
Keep records after resolution. Save the final decision, corrected statement, transaction receipt, and any release or settlement notice. If the venue’s explanation differs from the rule, record that distinction for future contracts and review similar open positions before trading again.
