First check whether Android still opens. If it does, back up important files before trying low-risk troubleshooting. If your Pixel is stuck at the Google logo, keeps restarting, opens Fastboot or Recovery, or shows a blank screen, use Google’s official recovery instructions for your model before considering a reset or firmware flash: those actions can erase local data.
Identify what your Pixel can still do
The next step depends on the screen you can reach:
- Android opens: Back up important data while you can, then try the cautious checks below.
- It repeatedly restarts or stops at the Google logo: Android is not available for normal troubleshooting. Use Google’s Pixel repair or recovery guidance.
- Fastboot or Recovery appears: Note the exact screen and follow the current instructions for your Pixel model. Do not select a reset option unless you understand the data loss.
- The display stays blank: Remove accessories and check whether the phone responds to its buttons. Google says a factory reset can be triggered with the buttons when a phone is unresponsive or blank, but that reset erases data.
The timing alone does not prove that an update caused the failure. The official troubleshooting steps cover crashes and restarts generally; they cannot establish the cause of a particular phone’s problem.

If Android still opens, try the lower-risk checks first
Google’s general guidance for a Pixel that restarts or crashes recommends these checks. They may help with instability, but they are not a guaranteed fix for a failed system update.
- Back up irreplaceable data. Do this before experimenting, especially if the phone’s ability to stay on is unpredictable.
- Check for an Android update. Open Settings > System > Software updates and check whether an update is available. Follow the on-screen instructions if one is offered.
- Check available storage. Google says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. This is a troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that freeing space will fix an update problem.
- Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time. Restart the phone after each removal and observe whether the problem changes before removing another app.
- Temporarily remove accessories. Take off the case and external battery accessories while troubleshooting. An accessory might cover a sensor or press a button.
Google’s general crash and restart guidance is available in Fix a Pixel phone that’s restarting or crashing.

If Android will not boot, use Google’s recovery options
Start with Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair tool
Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair page directs users to connect a phone in Fastboot mode to a computer using USB. Follow the current page’s instructions for your device; the tool’s behavior and supported devices can change, and it is not a promise that every failure can be repaired. If you need a cable, it must carry data and fit both the Pixel and computer ports.
Understand the difference between OTA packages and factory images
Google describes full OTA packages as a way to restore Pixel firmware and specifically notes their use for recovering from a failed over-the-air update. Follow Google’s exact instructions and select the package that matches the device and build. See Full OTA Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices.

A factory image is a different route: Google warns that flashing one requires a full device reset. The factory-image instructions are aimed at people who can follow device- and build-specific flashing procedures; they are not interchangeable with the full OTA instructions. Consult Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices only if you understand the procedure and its consequences.

Google’s Android Flash Tool also requires unlocking the bootloader, which triggers a full reset and removes user data. Do not proceed on the assumption that unlocking or flashing will preserve files. Read Google’s Android Flash Tool instructions before deciding whether this route is appropriate.
Know the data risk before resetting or flashing
Google’s Pixel Phone Help states: “A factory data reset will remove all data from your phone.” Back up before resetting if you can. Google says data backed up to your Google Account may be restored afterward, but apps and their associated data are uninstalled. A backup does not make a reset data-preserving, and it may not include everything stored locally.
Factory-image flashing requires a full reset, and unlocking the bootloader for the Android Flash Tool also requires a reset that removes user data. Treat either as a data-erasing action. If the files on the phone are more important than getting it running quickly, pause before choosing a reset or unlock option and seek advice from Google support or an appropriate repair provider.

When to stop troubleshooting and get help
Contact Google Pixel support or an appropriate repair provider if the phone remains unusable, the official instructions do not match your model or screen, or you cannot accept the risk of erasing data. Repair availability, eligibility, cost, and options depend on the device and location, so confirm them directly rather than relying on a general promise. Avoid random firmware files or instructions intended for a different Pixel model or build.
