OpenAI says try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. What ChatGPT’s virtual try-on shows
On clothing and accessory product listings, ChatGPT may offer a “Try on” button. You can select it and take or upload a selfie to generate a try-on image. You can also upload a picture of a garment in a conversation and ask how it might look on you. OpenAI describes the feature in its Shopping with ChatGPT Search help page.

That output is an image preview. OpenAI’s virtual clothing try-on prompting guide describes editing an image while preserving a person’s face, body shape, pose, hair, and identity as the garment changes. Those are visual-generation goals; they are not evidence that ChatGPT measures your body, models a garment’s physical dimensions, or predicts which size will fit.
How to use the preview when shopping
Use the generated image to consider appearance and styling, but don’t use it to decide whether to size up or down. OpenAI’s guidance is explicit: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” It tells shoppers to check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy before buying.

- Find the size information for the specific garment, rather than relying on a general expectation about a brand or clothing category.
- Compare the merchant’s measurements with your own if the chart calls for body measurements. A flexible measuring tape can help you take those measurements; this is a practical way to use the chart, not a way to make the generated image more accurate.
- Read the product details and any fit description the retailer provides. Don’t infer tightness, length, stretch, or comfort from the try-on image.
- Check the return policy before ordering, since terms vary by retailer and product.
Why a convincing image isn’t proof of a good fit
An image can look plausible while leaving the size question unanswered. OpenAI’s image evaluation guidance discusses qualities such as preserving the person and garment details, editing only the needed region, and producing a physically plausible result. Those visual criteria are different from showing how a particular size fits a real person.
Virtual try-on research also treats size-dependent fit as a distinct challenge. A 2026 CHI study reports that participants viewed the inability to generate size-dependent fit variations as a limitation in the system it studied, while a 2023 ICCV paper focuses on size-aware virtual try-on. Neither study tests ChatGPT’s current feature, so neither establishes its accuracy.

What to know before uploading a selfie
OpenAI says reference photos are saved for future try-ons. You can change or remove them in Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. If you choose to upload a photo, you can use those controls to manage the saved reference.
