A new Windows laptop running slowly does not automatically mean it is defective. Start with updates and a restart, then check what is using system resources, available storage, and Windows’ built-in security and health tools. If the slowdown persists, document the symptoms and contact the retailer or manufacturer before attempting a reset or reinstall.
First, identify what feels slow
Pin down the symptom before changing settings: is Windows slow to start, apps slow to open, the whole system laggy, the browser sluggish, or the laptop freezing intermittently? Note whether the issue began during initial setup or after installing an app, an update, or a peripheral. If the laptop is hot or its fan is unusually loud, note that too; those symptoms alone do not establish the cause.

There are several possible explanations, including startup or background activity, low storage, outdated software, malware, resource-heavy processes, or hardware limits. The laptop being new does not identify which one applies. Microsoft outlines these possibilities in its Windows performance guidance.

Check Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart if Windows prompts you to, then check whether the symptom has changed.
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. You can also review Advanced options > Optional updates for a driver that appears relevant to the laptop or the problem. Optional driver updates are noncritical; do not install an unrelated driver simply because it is offered. See Microsoft’s guidance on improving PC performance.

Find out whether an app or resource is holding things up
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes and Performance, inspect CPU, memory, and disk use. If one process stays busy while you are not actively using the laptop, note its name and the resource it is using. A brief spike during startup or an update is different from sustained high use while idle.
To check which programs launch automatically, open Task Manager’s Startup apps section. Startup applications can affect startup speed and overall performance, but disabling an item may prevent a feature you rely on from launching automatically. Disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup; leave unfamiliar entries alone until you can identify them. Microsoft describes the setting in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Check available storage before cleaning anything up
In File Explorer, select This PC to see available space, or open Settings > System > Storage. If space is low, review temporary files, installed apps, and Storage Sense before removing files or programs. Microsoft warns that running out of storage can cause slower performance or trouble installing Windows updates; that does not mean storage is necessarily the cause on your laptop.

Run Windows’ built-in security and health checks
Scan for threats
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a quick scan. Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, but a scan is a check—not proof that malware caused a slowdown.
Review device health
In Windows Security, open Device performance & health. Review any flagged storage, battery, software, or system issue and follow the specific recommendation if it applies. The report provides clues; it does not by itself establish that a particular hardware part is defective. Microsoft explains this page in its Device performance and health guide.

Use a clean boot only if basic checks do not help
If the slowdown continues and you suspect a startup program or background service is conflicting with Windows, a clean boot can help isolate nonessential services and startup programs. It involves advanced configuration and may temporarily reduce functionality. Keep track of changes so you can restore normal startup afterward. Microsoft warns that changing System Configuration can make a computer unusable; if you are unsure about the steps, ask the manufacturer or a support professional first. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions carefully.
When to contact the retailer or manufacturer
If the laptop remains slow after the basic checks, avoid repeated speculative tuning. Gather the details that can help support diagnose the issue:

- The exact laptop model and Windows version.
- What is slow, when it began, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent.
- Any recent app, update, or peripheral changes.
- What Task Manager showed for CPU, memory, or disk use when the problem occurred.
- Any relevant Windows Security scan or device health findings.
Contact the retailer or manufacturer using the support details for your purchase or device. The right diagnosis, warranty coverage, and return options depend on the seller, manufacturer, and purchase terms; the symptoms alone do not establish a defective part. If support recommends a reset, reinstall, or another recovery option that could affect files, back up important data first and choose the least disruptive suitable option.
