For most people, use a short, practical inactivity auto-lock interval and a strong device passcode as the baseline. Add biometrics for convenient local sign-in, and require fresh authentication for sensitive actions. Bluetooth proximity features are best treated as convenience or an extra fallback—not as your only lock. Their behavior varies: Android can keep a phone unlocked near a trusted Bluetooth device, while Windows Dynamic Lock may lock a PC after a paired phone moves away.
How the options differ
| Control | What it does | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen timeout and inactivity auto-lock | Locks after the device has been idle for a chosen period. | A dependable baseline when you set a practical, short delay. | It may not lock immediately when you walk away. Manually lock a device you leave unattended. NIST guidance |
| Bluetooth trusted-device stay-unlocked | Keeps a supported phone unlocked while connected to a selected Bluetooth device. | Reducing repeated unlocks in a controlled setting. | Someone near the trusted device may be able to access the phone; Bluetooth connection can be imitated. Google Android Help |
| Bluetooth walk-away auto-lock | Windows Dynamic Lock can lock an idle PC when a paired phone’s Bluetooth signal falls below a threshold. | Adding an automatic fallback when you leave your PC. | It only locks when the system is idle and is not a replacement for manually locking the computer. Microsoft Learn |
| Biometrics and fresh authentication | Verifies a user locally at sign-in or before selected app actions. | Making routine access convenient while protecting higher-risk actions with another check. | Prompts may fall back to a device PIN, pattern, or password; protect that fallback from shoulder-surfing. Android Developers |
These are not interchangeable features. A timeout locks after inactivity; Android’s trusted-device feature can keep a phone unlocked; Windows Dynamic Lock can lock an idle PC after a signal weakens. Apple also documents device-to-device unlock flows with Apple-specific requirements.

How long should your screen stay on before it locks?
Choose the shortest delay that still fits your routine. A shorter interval reduces the time someone could find an unattended device unlocked, while an interval that is too aggressive can interrupt ordinary use. NIST recommends enabling mobile auto-lock with a maximum idle time that reduces the chance of physical access while unlocked, but its guidance does not set one universal number. Treat the setting as a practical balance, not a security guarantee. NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue: PHY-4
Auto-lock is a fallback, not a substitute for locking before you leave a phone or computer unattended. For especially sensitive situations, lock it immediately rather than relying on a timer or a proximity signal.

When Bluetooth proximity is useful—and when it is risky
Android: keeping a phone unlocked near a trusted device
Google describes Extend Unlock, previously called Smart Lock, as a way to keep an Android phone unlocked in selected situations after an initial PIN, pattern, or password unlock. Examples include a trusted Bluetooth watch or car speaker system. Google advises against choosing a device that is usually kept with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case.
Google says Extend Unlock may keep a device unlocked for up to four hours at a time. It also notes that Bluetooth connectivity can reach up to 100 meters, depending on the phone, Bluetooth device, and environment. Neither figure guarantees how long your phone will remain unlocked or defines a safe distance for your setup. A nearby person may be able to use the phone while the trusted device keeps it unlocked, and Google warns that someone could imitate the Bluetooth connection. Google’s setup and behavior details

Use this feature only if the convenience is worth the reduced security margin and you can keep the trusted device under control. NIST’s catalogue also identifies spoofing a trusted Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device as a threat pattern and recommends protecting initial pairing, maintaining physical control of the paired device, and avoiding a device normally kept near the phone. That entry uses the older Smart Lock name; it describes a threat pattern, not identical behavior across every current Android release. NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue: AUT-6
Windows: locking a PC after your phone moves away
Windows 10 and Windows 11 Dynamic Lock uses the Bluetooth signal from a paired phone. Microsoft says the PC locks when that signal drops below a maximum RSSI value, but only if the computer is idle. As a result, Dynamic Lock is a walk-away fallback—not an immediate lock guarantee when you stand up or leave the room. Microsoft explicitly says it does not replace manually locking the computer. Apple: device unlock has its own conditions
Apple documents a device-to-device unlock process that uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect devices and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi to approximate distance. For Apple Watch unlocking an iPhone, the documented conditions include a recent prior iPhone unlock and proximity of roughly 2–3 meters or less, along with other device-state requirements. A successful unlock triggers a notification and haptic on the watch. Apple Watch cannot replace Face ID for Apple Pay or app authorization. These requirements apply to the specified Apple unlock flows, not to Bluetooth proximity features generally. Apple’s automatic-unlock documentation
What biometrics add—and where to require another check
Biometrics can make routine local authentication easier, but they should not remove the need for a strong device credential. On Android, a biometric prompt may fall back to the device PIN, pattern, or password. Someone who can observe that credential being entered may compromise the fallback even if biometric matching is secure.

For app developers, Android’s guidance recommends authentication timeouts and biometric verification for sensitive apps, with additional authentication before consequential actions such as money transfers. For everyday users, the practical takeaway is to enable fresh checks where an app or service offers them, especially before high-impact actions; an unlocked phone or successful initial sign-in should not automatically authorize every sensitive action. Does Bluetooth security make proximity unlocking safe?
Bluetooth protocols can use pairing, authentication, encryption, message integrity, and protections against passive eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks. Apple also describes BLE address randomization as a privacy measure that makes long-term tracking harder. Those protocol protections do not prove that a product’s proximity rule reliably detects the authorized person: a feature may respond to a connection or signal condition rather than confirm who is holding the device. Choose a setup for your situation
- For a phone you carry in public: use inactivity auto-lock, a strong passcode, and biometrics for routine unlocking. Be cautious about keeping it unlocked through a nearby Bluetooth device.
- For a PC you sometimes leave at a desk: use Dynamic Lock as an additional fallback if it works reliably with your paired phone, but lock manually when you leave.
- For payments or other sensitive app actions: use fresh authentication where available rather than treating proximity or an earlier device unlock as approval.
- For any proximity feature: consider what happens if the paired device stays close, the signal behaves unpredictably, or another person gains access to it. Prefer a timeout and manual lock when the consequences of an unlocked device are high.
