Shut down your MacBook, unplug it, and gently wipe the bare display with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Don’t scrape the screen, spray liquid onto it, or assume a mark that won’t wipe away is adhesive. Apple’s cleaning guidance is for the MacBook display; any advice to remove residue from a protector itself may not be safe for the screen underneath.
Remove the protector carefully, if it is still attached
If film remains on the display, remove it slowly and gently, following the protector maker’s instructions. For its own screen-protector products, 3M advises slowly pulling the filter away from the display. That is product-specific guidance, not a general cleaning instruction for a bare MacBook screen.

Clean the bare screen using Apple’s guidance
- Shut down and unplug the MacBook. Apple Support says: “To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean the computer’s screen.” Apple’s cleaning instructions also warn against getting moisture into openings or spraying liquid directly onto the computer.
- Wipe gently with a clean cloth. Dampen the cloth rather than the screen; it should not be soaked. Avoid hard rubbing, scraping, abrasive materials, and solvents.
- Reassess before trying anything else. If gentle cleaning does not change the mark, do not keep rubbing or escalate to an adhesive remover on the bare display.
Should you use isopropyl alcohol or adhesive remover?
Apple says a cloth moistened with 70-percent isopropyl alcohol may be used gently for hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints. Apple does not identify this as a method for removing screen-protector adhesive, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for residue.
3M says IPA or other adhesive removers may remove residue from its own protector products. That advice applies to those products; it does not establish that an adhesive remover is appropriate for a MacBook display. Apple cautions against solvents and abrasives in its Mac cleaning guidance. Protector-care instructions also vary by product: for example, Belkin’s Screen Skinz cleaning instructions apply to that product, not to the bare screen beneath it.

When to stop cleaning and get the display inspected
A mark that remains after a gentle, water-dampened-cloth attempt cannot be reliably identified remotely as adhesive. Avoid repeated or forceful cleaning and arrange an inspection with Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says its service providers inspect the Mac and provide an estimate based on the issue and coverage; see Apple’s Mac laptop service and repair options.
