What to Do If a Layer 2 Bridge or Sequencer Is Offline

A bridge screen or wallet error does not always mean your Layer 2 transaction is stuck. Check the chain status, verify the original transaction, and use only that network’s documented recovery steps.

If a Layer 2 bridge or sequencer appears offline, first check the chain’s official status page and the transaction’s onchain status. A wallet or RPC failure can look like a network outage, while an unavailable bridge interface does not necessarily mean a cross-chain message has stopped. Don’t submit a replacement transaction until you know whether the original was accepted.

What does “offline” mean?

A Layer 2 transaction can pass through several distinct stages: your wallet sends it to an RPC endpoint, a sequencer orders it, the L2 executes it, and cross-chain messages or withdrawals may require additional processing or finalization. A problem at one stage does not prove that every other component is down.

Arbitrum Docs describes the sequencer as “the entity granted specific privileges over ordering transactions”; after it commits to an ordering by posting a batch on Ethereum, it has no say over what happens next, including execution. That distinction helps explain why a sequencer issue, an L1 batch-posting delay, and a withdrawal-finalization delay are not interchangeable.

Sequencer, bridge interface, and RPC are different

  • Sequencer outage: The service that orders transactions may be unavailable or delayed.
  • Bridge interface problem: A website may fail to load even though an initiated message remains recorded onchain.
  • RPC or wallet connectivity problem: Your wallet may not be able to reach its chosen endpoint even while the chain is operating.
  • Withdrawal finalization delay: The L2 transaction may have succeeded, but further protocol steps may still be required before the withdrawal is claimable or visible as an L1 transfer.

What should you check first?

  1. Identify the chain and the failing service. Check that network’s official status page. Look for separate components such as deposits, withdrawals, transaction sequencing, batch submission, and node synchronization; a general “operational” label may not describe every part of the process.
  2. Compare the status page with your wallet’s error. If the chain reports normal operation but your wallet cannot connect, the issue may be the wallet’s RPC endpoint. Arbitrum distinguishes its general-purpose public RPC from its direct sequencer endpoint. Its public RPC does not guarantee uptime, latency, or rate limits; its documentation recommends third-party node infrastructure or a self-hosted node for applications that depend on availability. Switching to an alternate RPC can help with an endpoint problem, but it cannot restart a stopped sequencer or bridge.
  3. Save the transaction hash and check the correct chain. Use the official bridge history or explorer for the network and transaction type. For Arbitrum, use the L1 initiating transaction hash for an L1-to-L2 message, and the L2 initiating transaction hash for an L2-to-L1 withdrawal. Its bridge history can show status and allow a withdrawal to be claimed; retryable tickets have a separate redemption tool.
  4. Check whether the original transaction was accepted before doing anything again. A slow wallet or bridge screen is not proof that a transaction failed. Inspect the hash in the relevant explorer or bridge history before signing a replacement.

Status pages provide a snapshot, not a diagnosis of an individual wallet or RPC connection. For example, Base’s page showed its listed mainnet services operational and no incidents for October 5, 2026. Optimism’s page showed its listed components operational and no notices during the seven days before it was checked on October 7, 2026. Those observations describe those dates only.

Which recovery option fits your situation?

What you find What to do What it will not fix
Your wallet cannot connect, but the chain’s official status information does not indicate an outage. Check the transaction hash and, if appropriate, try a reputable alternate RPC endpoint. For availability-sensitive applications, Arbitrum Docs recommends third-party node infrastructure or a self-hosted node. An alternate RPC cannot restore a chain-wide sequencer or bridge outage.
The bridge website is unavailable, but a message or withdrawal was already initiated. Look up its status using the correct initiating transaction hash in the chain’s official bridge history or explorer. Follow that network’s documented claim or redemption flow if one is available. A broken interface does not establish that the message failed, and the hash alone does not guarantee that it is ready to claim.
The transaction returned a transient connection or network error. Retry only if the network’s documentation permits it and you have checked whether the original was accepted. Arbitrum says network/connection errors and a sequencer “context deadline exceeded” can be retried with backoff because the transaction was not accepted in that case. That Arbitrum guidance is not a universal rule for every L2 or every error.
The transaction returned a terminal error or contract revert. Read the error and the chain’s documentation before acting. Arbitrum says not to blindly retry terminal errors such as “nonce too low” or contract reverts. Resubmitting the same transaction does not resolve a terminal error.
The network documents a sequencer bypass or forced-inclusion mechanism. Use only that network’s official procedure and check its current waiting period and requirements. Arbitrum’s DelayedInbox route is not a general procedure for other L2s.

When can you bypass an Arbitrum sequencer?

Arbitrum documents a network-specific route for sending a message through its DelayedInbox to bypass the sequencer and force inclusion after a waiting period. Its FAQ described that wait as currently about 24 hours when accessed October 7, 2026. The duration is volatile; check the live Arbitrum documentation before relying on it. Arbitrum describes the mechanism as intended for rare cases, especially when the sequencer is expected not to return.

This is not a shortcut to use whenever a wallet is slow, nor a universal feature of Layer 2 networks. Do not send funds or sign instructions from an unofficial guide claiming to provide a generic sequencer bypass.

Why can a withdrawal take longer than the L2 transaction?

A successful L2 withdrawal may still need protocol-specific processing before it can be finalized or claimed on Ethereum. The bridge interface may not show it as an ordinary L1 wallet-to-wallet transaction.

ZKsync withdrawal timing and visibility

ZKsync says withdrawals are generally internal transactions managed through BridgeHub and may appear in the explorer’s Internal Transactions section. Its documentation states a three-hour minimum execution delay for supported chains, but explicitly says this does not guarantee L1 finalization within three hours; network activity and proof generation can extend the process. ZKsync documents 21 hours as the previous supported-chain delay, which is historical rather than the current stated minimum.

How do you avoid making the situation worse?

  • Keep the initiating transaction hash and use the official explorer or bridge history for the correct network.
  • Do not repeatedly sign replacement transactions just because a website is slow. Confirm acceptance and nonce status first.
  • Follow the chain’s documentation for retries, claims, ticket redemption, or forced inclusion; one network’s recovery steps may not apply to another.
  • Use official status and documentation channels. Never share a seed phrase with anyone claiming they can recover funds.
