Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose Surface Laptop if you want a conventional clamshell PC with its keyboard always attached. Choose Surface Pro if you’ll use it as a tablet, prop it up with its kickstand, or detach and reposition its keyboard. The right fit depends mainly on how you work—not on a proven universal performance winner. For a Pro, check whether the keyboard and pen are included and add any needed accessories to the total cost.
What’s the practical difference?
| Decision | Surface Laptop | Surface Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Traditional clamshell laptop | Tablet with a built-in kickstand |
| Keyboard | Built in | Detachable accessory; bundle contents vary |
| Best fit when | You mostly type and want a ready-to-use laptop shape | You want to switch between tablet use and typing |
Microsoft describes the Laptop as a clamshell with a built-in keyboard and the Pro as a 2-in-1 tablet with a kickstand and detachable keyboard. That design distinction is more useful for choosing between them than treating one family as automatically better. Microsoft’s comparison was updated June 16, 2026.

Which one suits the way you work?
Choose Surface Laptop for regular typing
If most of your time is spent writing, working at a desk, or using a computer on your lap, the integrated keyboard and clamshell form make the Laptop the straightforward option. You do not have to attach a separate keyboard to turn it into a laptop.
Choose Surface Pro if tablet mode matters
The Pro is the more flexible choice if you expect to read, sketch, present, or use the screen as a tablet between typing sessions. Its kickstand supports the tablet, and its detachable keyboard can be removed or repositioned. Those advantages matter most when you will actually use the tablet form; if not, the Laptop’s simpler setup may suit you better.

Check sizes and configurations, not just family names
The Surface lineup includes multiple sizes, and the available models depend on market and configuration. Microsoft’s current comparison lists 13-inch Laptop models alongside 13.8-inch and 15-inch Laptop options, and 12-inch and 13-inch Pro families. Its cited 2024 fact sheets describe the 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition and the Surface Pro 11th Edition; those sheets do not establish what remains in stock or is sold in every region.
For the Surface Laptop 7th Edition, Microsoft’s May 2024 fact sheet lists Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite processor options by size, a 45 TOPS NPU, memory options of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB, and removable SSD options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. Microsoft’s June 2024 Surface Pro 11th Edition fact sheet also lists Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite variants and a 45 TOPS NPU. These are manufacturer-listed configurations, not a guarantee of current regional availability or a measure of overall speed. Screen-size figures are measured diagonally within a standard rectangle; actual viewable area is smaller.

Before buying, compare the exact model, screen size, processor, memory, storage, and included accessories on the current listing for your market. The family name alone does not tell you which configuration or bundle you are getting.

Budget for a Surface Pro keyboard and pen if needed
Unlike the Laptop’s built-in keyboard, a Pro keyboard is a detachable accessory. Depending on the selected bundle, you may need to buy one separately. Check the keyboard’s compatibility with the exact Pro model, whether the pen is included, and what the package actually contains before comparing totals. Accessory compatibility and regional bundles can vary; Microsoft’s device comparison is a starting point, but confirm the details on the current product listing.

Copilot+ features depend on the specific device and configuration
Do not assume every Surface Laptop or Surface Pro includes Copilot+ PC experiences. Microsoft Support defines Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 PCs with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Its Support page lists Surface Laptop 7th Edition or later and Surface Pro 13-inch 11th Edition or later among qualifying device families. Microsoft’s comparison also notes that eligibility depends on select configurations, including at least 16GB of RAM, and may involve additional requirements.
Microsoft lists experiences such as Recall, Click to Do, Improved Windows Search, Live Captions, Cocreator, Restyle Image, Image Creator, Windows Studio Effects, and automatic super resolution. Availability and system requirements can change. Check the current requirements for the exact model and configuration before buying for a particular feature. Microsoft Support’s Copilot+ and Surface PC information has the device and feature details.

Don’t choose by advertised battery estimates alone
The available information does not establish a reliable battery-life winner between the two families. Microsoft cautions that battery results vary significantly with device configuration, usage, network and signal conditions, settings, and other factors. Manufacturer estimates are not guarantees of how long a particular configuration will last in your routine, and they should not be treated as a direct comparison unless the conditions are comparable.

How to make the final choice
- Decide whether you need tablet mode. If you’ll read, sketch, present, or work with the screen detached from a keyboard, favor Surface Pro. If you mainly need a laptop for typing, favor Surface Laptop.
- Compare exact models in your region. Confirm the size, processor, memory, storage, and current availability on the product listing rather than assuming every model in a family is offered locally.
- Calculate the complete Pro setup. Add a compatible keyboard and any pen you need if they are not included in the selected bundle.
- Check feature requirements. If Copilot+ matters, verify that the exact device and configuration qualify and meet current software requirements.
- Compare current local prices. Prices and bundles vary, and the available information does not establish an apples-to-apples price winner.
