Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Tokens and NFTs do not automatically move to Ethereum when an Ethereum Layer 2 shuts down. They may still be recoverable through Ethereum contracts, but the route depends on the specific network, whether its latest state data and exit mechanism are available, and how the asset is held. A broken website or offline operator is not the same as unusable L1 contracts or unavailable state data.
What does “the L2 is down” mean?
It can describe different failures with different consequences. A project’s website may be unavailable while the network’s contracts and withdrawal route still work. A sequencer or operator may stop processing transactions while users can still reconstruct the latest state and submit an exit. More seriously, required state data may be unavailable, or the Ethereum contracts needed to complete an exit may no longer be usable.

The key questions are not just whether the app is running or whether the network calls itself a rollup. You need to know whether the relevant state can be recovered, whether the L1 exit path still works, and whether it covers the contract that holds your asset.
What determines whether an asset can be withdrawn?
- State data: Can you obtain the data needed to reconstruct the latest accepted L2 state and prove ownership or a withdrawal?
- Exit mechanism: Does the network provide a functioning L1 withdrawal, forced-action, or escape-hatch path, and can you use it without the normal operator or interface?
- Proof and timing: What message, state root, or proof is required, and does the exit have a challenge or waiting period?
- Asset contract: Is the token held directly by an account, represented through a bridge, or locked in an application contract whose own exit must work?
If any required link is missing, the fact that an asset appears in an L2 wallet or application does not by itself establish that it can be withdrawn.

How exit paths differ by design
| System or failure | What the documented design provides | What to verify for your network |
|---|---|---|
| Optimistic rollup operator stops producing batches | Ethereum.org explains that published transaction data can let another node reproduce the last state and help users construct ownership proofs for withdrawals. Its general explanation describes a challenge period of roughly seven days; that is not a guarantee of the timing on every chain. | Whether data for the latest accepted state is available, L1 contracts remain usable, and the network’s current withdrawal window and proof requirements. |
| ZK rollup operator or interface failure | Ethereum.org describes validity proofs and published state data. ZKsync’s bridge documentation describes proving an L2-to-L1 withdrawal message on its L1 bridge. | Which batch contains the withdrawal, what message and proof are needed, and whether the L1 bridge contract remains available. |
| Validium operator or data failure | StarkEx documentation describes a mode in which balances are kept offchain by a Data Availability Committee; recovery depends on access to the data and a Merkle proof. | Who holds the required data, whether it can be obtained, and whether a proof for the relevant state can be built. |
| NFT or application-held asset | The cited rollup and bridge documentation does not establish universal emergency support for arbitrary NFTs or application-specific state. | The NFT contract, bridge mapping or custody contract, and whether the documented exit explicitly covers that asset. |
What happens on an optimistic rollup?
Optimistic rollups generally publish transaction data on Ethereum. Ethereum.org explains that if an operator goes offline, another node can use available data to reproduce the last state, and users can use transaction data to create Merkle proofs for ownership and withdrawal. The data matters because a user may need it to establish what they owned on L2; simply waiting for the operator to return is not the only possible path when the protocol supports an exit.
The OP Stack specification illustrates why a shutdown does not trigger an automatic refund: an L2 account sends a withdrawal message to the L2-to-L1 message passer, and a relayer then proves it on OptimismPortal. The L1 process must still be completed. The exact requirements and timing depend on the particular deployment.
What happens on a ZK rollup?
ZK rollups use validity proofs to verify state changes, and Ethereum.org says they publish data needed to reconstruct state. The exit still requires a withdrawal transaction and the rollup’s L1 contract; the proof system does not itself send every asset back to Ethereum when an operator or app stops.

ZKsync’s bridge documentation describes the ordinary L2-to-L1 route: a withdrawal message is proven on the L1 bridge before it can be finalized. That documents the bridge mechanism, not a guarantee that every failure scenario or deployment will have an available interface, proof, or functioning L1 contract.
Why Validium data availability changes the recovery assumptions
“ZK” does not necessarily mean all recovery data is published on Ethereum. StarkEx documents both a ZK-rollup mode, in which data needed to recover the balances tree is published onchain, and a Validium mode, in which balances are offchain and a Data Availability Committee stores the data. In the Validium design described by StarkEx, committee members retain copies and can return data to the public domain if operators do not service withdrawal requests; users with a Merkle proof for the latest state can then withdraw.
That means a Validium exit depends on the availability of the offchain data and the documented committee process as well as on the proof and L1 path. Do not assume that an exit works under the same data-availability assumptions as a rollup that publishes reconstructible data on Ethereum.

Are NFTs treated differently from fungible tokens?
The general recovery principles are similar, but NFT recovery cannot be inferred from documentation about fungible-token balances or ordinary bridge transfers. An NFT may be represented by an L2 contract and an L1 escrow or counterpart, or it may be controlled by an application contract. A forced withdrawal that covers a wallet balance may not cover an NFT or a position held inside a particular application.
Before relying on an emergency route, identify the NFT’s exact contract and check whether the network’s official procedure names that contract or supports the relevant asset type. For an NFT or DeFi position held by an application, also check whether the application contract itself can be called or exited through that procedure.

The dYdX Explorer’s Escape Hatch guide identifies dYdX v3 as discontinued and its exchange contracts as frozen. Its documented Forced Actions address cases where the system is still operating but the normal interface is unavailable or an operator does not honor a request; after the configured period, a user can request a freeze. Once the system is frozen, the guide describes users requesting withdrawals of full balances through Ethereum contracts and Merkle proofs.

How to assess your own withdrawal route
- Identify the network and asset. Record the exact L2, token or NFT contract address, and whether the asset is in your wallet, a bridge, or an application contract.
- Separate interface failure from protocol failure. Check whether only the project website or sequencer is unavailable, or whether the L1 contracts or exit mechanism are also affected.
- Find the network’s official exit instructions. Look for its withdrawal, forced-action, or escape-hatch documentation rather than assuming another rollup’s steps apply.
- Check state and proof requirements. Confirm that data for the latest relevant state is available and determine what message, Merkle proof, or other evidence the procedure requires.
- Confirm asset coverage and contract status. Verify that the procedure covers the specific token, NFT, or application position and that the contracts it calls remain usable.
There is no universal transaction sequence for every L2 shutdown. The required action depends on the named network, its current contract status, and the asset’s contract path.
