First identify the game and both players’ platforms, then work out whether the invite is for voice chat, a game session, or an in-game lobby. Those are separate invitation flows, and the right place to send or accept an invite depends on the platform and game. If an invite never arrives, check the supported invite route and account controls; if it arrives but the join fails, check whether the game and session allow the recipient to join before troubleshooting the network.
Start by identifying the invite and its supported route
“Party invitation” can mean a voice-chat party, a console-level game group, or a game-specific lobby. Check the game’s own social or multiplayer menu if a platform-level invite is missing or unusable. A game may support its own invite or join flow even when the platform’s menu does not support the action you are attempting.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch, received game invitations appear in the player’s profile under Online Play Invites. Nintendo says the Switch User Page menu cannot invite specific friends to join a multiplayer game; supported games may offer their own way to invite or join friends. On Switch 2, Nintendo describes invitations for supported software through the C Menu, and received invitations can also be checked in the profile’s Online Play Invites area. The available actions depend on the software and platform context. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 invitation guidance.

PlayStation 5
On PS5, a game invitation can be sent through a player profile, Game Base, or from within the game; the profile and Game Base routes Sony describes apply to PS5 games, while an individual game’s own invite options may differ. A received invite appears as a notification. Sony also documents joining an eligible game group from a friend’s profile or the Play With Friends card. Other platforms
Invite menus and acceptance steps vary by console, PC platform, and game. The available platform documentation here does not establish current consumer Xbox menu instructions, so use the game’s official support page or the relevant platform’s current instructions rather than relying on a guessed menu path.

If the invitation does not arrive
- Confirm the sender used a supported route. Try the game’s own invite or friends menu. On Switch, check Online Play Invites in the recipient’s profile rather than assuming the invite will appear in another system menu.
- Check account restrictions. Privacy settings can restrict communication or multiplayer invitations. On PlayStation, review Communication and Multiplayer privacy controls, including the control for cross-play game invitations. The relevant options are described in Sony’s privacy settings guide.
- Check family controls where applicable. A PlayStation child account’s privacy settings may be managed by a family manager, parent, or guardian, and the child may not be allowed to change every setting.
- Check whether the sender is blocked. Sony says a blocked player in the group or party will not receive the game invitation. If an invite reaches one friend but not another, compare the recipient and sender account settings.
If the invitation arrives but joining fails
Check whether the game and session are joinable
On PS5, the recipient needs the game installed, and the game group needs an open place. Some sessions are not directly joinable; if the game offers a request-to-join option, use that flow. A valid invitation does not by itself guarantee that the session is still available.

Check cross-play and game compatibility
If the problem happens only when players use different device types, check whether that specific game supports cross-play between those platforms and whether cross-play is enabled as the game requires. Cross-device invitations can also depend on how the game or service configures sessions, invite permissions, supported devices, and audience restrictions. Microsoft’s developer-facing invite troubleshooting documentation describes such title- and service-side causes; players generally need to check the game’s support guidance, not edit developer settings.

Separate a game-session invite from a voice party
If the players can join the game but cannot hear or enter voice chat, troubleshoot the voice-party feature separately. A voice party and an invitation to a multiplayer session are different features, with different controls and eligibility rules.
Test the network only when the symptom points to connectivity
A network test is useful when the invite is accepted but matchmaking or joining fails with a connection problem. It is not a universal fix for an invite that was never sent or is blocked by privacy settings. Nintendo’s online matchmaking troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the console’s internet connection and noting the NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. After changing a console or network setting, test again so you can tell whether that change affected the connection.

- If the console reports a non-optimal NAT type, peer-to-peer connections may be affected. Ask the router manufacturer about router firmware or reset questions; an ISP or network administrator may also be able to help.
- If the console is connected by Ethernet and you suspect the cable is damaged, try a different Ethernet cable to check whether the original is the cause. This is relevant only to a wired setup.
Give support details that narrow down the failure
If the problem persists, contact the game publisher or platform support for a game-specific or account-specific failure. Include:

- whether the players are on the same platform or using cross-play;
- whether the invitation never arrives, arrives but cannot be accepted, or is accepted but fails to join;
- the exact error message, if one appears;
- whether the game’s own invite or join menu works; and
- whether the problem affects one friend or everyone.
For a connection issue, provide the console’s connection-test results, including NAT type and speeds. Contact the router manufacturer, ISP, or network administrator as appropriate for network-level problems.
