How to Bridge Assets from an Ethereum Layer 2 to Ethereum Mainnet

Withdraw from an Ethereum L2 to mainnet by selecting a supported bridge route, checking the live quote and recipient, and completing any required wait or L1 claim.

To move a token from an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network back to Ethereum mainnet (Layer 1, or L1), initiate an L2-to-L1 withdrawal through a bridge that supports your network and token. Connect your wallet, select the L2 as the source and Ethereum mainnet as the destination, check the recipient, amount and live fees, then confirm the transaction. Depending on the network and route, you may need to wait and later prove or claim the withdrawal on L1.

Before you start

  • Identify the network and token. Check which L2 currently holds the asset and select the exact token entry supported by the bridge. Token names can be similar; confirm the asset shown in the wallet and bridge.
  • Choose a route you understand. Start with the network’s official bridge, or use another route only after checking its supported networks and tokens, fees, and trust and custody assumptions.
  • Keep gas funds on the L2. You need the source network’s gas asset to submit the withdrawal. Arbitrum’s official quickstart specifically warns that insufficient ETH for transaction costs can prevent a wallet confirmation prompt from appearing. Arbitrum’s bridge quickstart explains its requirements.
  • Use the live quote. Fees and estimated output vary by network, token, and route; check the selected bridge’s current interface rather than relying on a fixed cost.

How to withdraw from an L2 to Ethereum mainnet

  1. Open the selected bridge and connect your wallet. Verify that you are using the intended bridge interface.
  2. Set the route. Choose the L2 holding your funds as the source and Ethereum mainnet as the destination.
  3. Select the token and amount. Confirm the token is supported for this route and check the destination address or recipient shown by the bridge.
  4. Review before signing. Check the estimated amount received, fees, source, destination, and recipient. Ethereum.org’s bridge guide recommends reviewing the amount and fees as part of the transfer.
  5. Submit the withdrawal. Confirm the transaction in your wallet only when its details match the route you intend to use. Never share your recovery phrase or approve an unexplained wallet request.
  6. Track and complete the exit. Monitor the bridge status and follow its instructions to wait, prove, finalize, or claim the withdrawal. Some routes require a separate L1 action after the waiting period.
  7. Verify receipt. Once the bridge reports completion, switch your wallet to Ethereum mainnet and check the token balance and recipient address.

How long does an L2 withdrawal take?

There is no single withdrawal time for every L2. The delay and the final steps depend on the network’s bridge design and the route you select. The following timings are documented for the named networks and mechanisms; check their current official instructions before starting.

Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova

The official Arbitrum bridge says withdrawals from Arbitrum One and Nova to Ethereum take at least seven days. Its guide describes a countdown of about 7–8 days, followed by a claim action on Ethereum. Arbitrum Foundation support explains the security rationale: “Whenever there are bridge transactions into the Ethereum mainnet using the official Arbitrum bridge, there is a mandatory 7-day waiting period for withdrawals and this is due to the bridge’s security measures.” The delay gives verifiers time to submit a fraud proof against a fraudulent transaction. See the Arbitrum Foundation support explanation.

OP Stack optimistic rollups

The OP Stack specification describes a withdrawal initiated on L2, proven on L1, and finalized after a seven-day challenge period. This describes the specified withdrawal mechanism, not a guarantee that every OP Stack network or interface uses identical labels or steps. Consult the documentation for the particular network; the OP Stack withdrawal specification outlines the process.

ZKsync

ZKsync documentation describes a three-hour delay before withdrawal finalization becomes available. Finalizing on L1 requires proving inclusion of the L2-to-L1 message. Refer to the relevant ZKsync bridging documentation for its current process.

Canonical bridge or faster liquidity route?

A canonical withdrawal follows the network’s bridge process and may require a substantial wait before the funds are usable on L1. Some services offer a faster route: a liquidity provider pays you on Ethereum before the canonical withdrawal finishes, generally in exchange for a fee and by taking over the pending withdrawal. Availability, supported assets, and terms vary, so a faster route is not a guaranteed option for every transfer.

What to compare Canonical withdrawal Faster liquidity-provider route
When funds become usable on L1 After the network’s withdrawal process and any required finalization or claim. Potentially sooner, if a provider supports the route and pays out; confirm the quoted timing.
Cost and output Review the live bridge quote and any required transaction costs. Compare the live total fee and amount received against the canonical route.
Route support Confirm the bridge supports the source network, token, and recipient. Confirm the provider supports the exact network, token, and recipient.
Trust and custody assumptions Assess the bridge’s verification and custody model. Assess both the bridge and the liquidity provider’s role and assumptions.
Later action A proof, finalization, or claim may be required. The provider may handle the pending withdrawal; check whether you have any later action.

Ethereum.org describes bridge models that rely on an operator or system as trusted, while trust-minimized designs use smart contracts and algorithms. Neither label means risk-free. Its bridge overview also explains how liquidity providers can pay users on L1 for a fee while taking over a pending withdrawal. Compare the route’s assumptions as well as its speed and price.

Can you return to Ethereum mainnet after bridging to an L2?

Yes. You can withdraw from an L2 to Ethereum mainnet using a supported bridge route. The process is an L2-to-L1 withdrawal, and its timing, fees, token support, and finalization steps depend on the network and bridge—not simply on how quickly you deposited. Ethereum.org addresses this question in its bridge guide.
